Monster (モンスター Monsutā) is a seinen manga written and illustrated by Naoki Urasawa, published by Shogakukan in Big Comic Original between 1994 and 2001, and reprinted in 18 tankōbon volumes. It was adapted by Madhouse as a 74-episode anime TV series, which aired on NTV from April 7, 2004 to September 28, 2005. It was directed by Masayuki Kojima, written by Tatsuhiko Urahata and featured character designs by Kitarō Kōsaka. The manga and anime have both been licensed by Viz Media for an English release. Urasawa later wrote and illustrated the novel Another Monster, a supplement story detailing the events of the manga from an investigative reporter's point of view, published by Shogakukan in 2002.

The thing is that johan was talking not only to the kid but also to himself as *spoiler* he had the same expirience when he was the kid (the same expirence that made him see himself as the monster the first time and the one that sparked his ideals and look on reality). By making the kid come to a conclusion that to kill one self is the proper conclusion he wanted to confirm that his ideals and prospective on life is the correct way of thinking. You can clearly see that at the end of series that all johan did was to try and kill himself.

Tricks johan used against the orphan: When the child begins catching on all johan has to do is look at him for a bit to discourage his questions. Immediately spreads seeds of disbelief disguised as rational thinking when the child says his mother will know him. Direct eye contact to make sure the child understands what he says. Gives him false hope while planting the seeds for despair in the same sentence. Sends him to a hostile enviorment that would surely traumatize him, Invoking the previously planted seeds to grow. The seeds grow into intense self loathing and hatred coupled with the hostile enviorment, causing hatred.

I always thought of this episode (and many other parts) a symbolistic portray of humans. In this case, the kid is the symbol of innocence, and Johan unlike what people think is not cruel here. He doesn't force anything on the kid, Johan here is more like a guide, Johan is the symbol of those nihilistic thoughts you have when you're on top of a building looking down, he's a call. Once the kid hears this call, he sets out on his journey with Hope (his mother) Johan then asks him: would you accept your hope as your raison d'etre? And then he goes on by saying would you accept your worthlessness if you lost that? The child doesn't get it at first, he's shocked by the mere idea, and actually forgets about it 10 seconds in, running with smile thinking about his mother. And Johan just observes the naivety and innocence. Once the kid faces the reality of humans and the horrors of their desires, and in the meantime loses his hope and reason of being, he understands what was Johan talking about and answers the call by commiting suicide. Johan never told the child tbe answer to his question, but the child himself chose the answer. Now if you are familiar with existentialism and its relationship with nihilism and how they emerge from the same starting point (that life is meaningless in itself) you will see that this scene is exactly portraying that idea and it's done beautifully.

Oppressing a child with one’s nihilistic perspective is a monstrous act. I use to be nihilistic when not pessimistic… I realized later in my point of view that the point of life was to evolve. I may still have a nihilistic view on life but I do see some aspects that may point out that a woman’s will to abandon her CV old is because of a psychological struggle and an instinct to isolate oneself from danger. The child would then be in a situation where he must know about the problem to avoid the damage. Either way it’s very hard on the mind and spirit.

@STAAAAAAAAAAAARRRS
@STAAAAAAAAAAAARRRS Год назад
@@OnnumMuttaiyum True. Well, to be exact, nihilism is the doctrine where one believes that existence is meaningless and senseless, where things such as values and beliefs ultimately become useless or pointless as in the most subtle way, life just happened as a biological accident over the course of time and beliefs did not support or justify one’s existence, nor did anything valued. Example: I used to view myself as just a skeleton with flesh, and organs only living because of them functioning whereas my life was hostage to time and it all felt like trial and error. Life just happens without meaning. Just science in action. Just organisms in the environment, with beliefs created out of pure wishful thinking and despair in rough times, and values, in the grand scale of things, feel like ideas born from the human brain, from the imagination, a pure concept, or notion… nothing more nothing less. Now, I think that such a view imposed on a child who had a set idea of the world, breaks it completely and causes a trauma, the change being too rough, causing shock. While it is visible that I still contain part of this… philosophy shall we say… I try to see things in a certain angle to avoid falling back in. It’s very traitorous since one change of angle makes the view a whole lot different. In the end, it all depends on hope, evolution and different outcomes. That’s why I think the view of an adult, who has evolved and can form a judgement for themselves, is less deranged if nihilistic rather than if it is that of a child. What remains uncertain, and therefor terrifying is the unpredictable intentions and actions… and once again, in an adult that has evolved and forms a judgment, it can take on many forms… the monster…and so do the outcomes.

@@STAAAAAAAAAAAARRRS i too have faced death more than once. When i look back from time to time, i realize that any one mistake would cost me my life in all of those situations yet here i am. Alive and breathing. At one point i stopped, lets say putting myself in situations where my life would be in danger and after i did, i started being more cautious and it was a weird realization for me that i had simply survived these very dangerous, almost horror type situations. I know it sounds weird to write it like that but thats literally how it was. I simply thought to myself "i really am alive after all that" because where other people died from less unfortune events in their lives, i survived worse for no apperant reason. These experiences simply made me believe in life more than anything else. Was it luck? Was it divine? Was it nothing? Was it something? I dont know. I dont ask these questions but i can feel the urge to ask them. Another thing it caused me to feel was that i felt as if i had used up all of my chances and that if i get in another deadly situation i will actually die this time. Which is quite ironic to me because back then i had no fear of death, it was simply an after thought and i didnt care yet i survived everything. While today, the thought of death comes foremost and affects almost every choice in my life as if dont calculate for them, i will die. I dont know which one is worse though. Being carefree to the point where i would put myself in very dangerous positions for almost no reason or the paranoia of death that affects my everyday life now. @@chosenstrong9539 it's hard to explain. In my opinion, he didn't necessarily derive pleasure from it, and he may not necessarily have seen it as manipulating people. In this particular case, it was a twisted fusion of him trying to recreate what happened at 511 Kinderhiem, and I suppose trying to enlighten Milos to the truth of the world. He wouldn't have seen it as necessarily manipulative or evil to simply tell someone the truth, and yet he certainly knew what he was doing and what goal he had in mind. Monster was weird, man.

Long ago, in a distant land, a monster was dying to have a name. However, the world was so large that the monster split in two. One monster went West, and another monster went East. The monster that went East happened upon a little town. At the town's entrance, he met a blacksmith. The monster asked the blacksmith for his name, but the blacksmith replied that he couldn't give him his name. The monster then convinces him that if he let him enter into his body, he would make him stronger. The blacksmith obliges, and and the monster enters into him. The monster then became known as Otto the Blacksmith. Because of the monster's influence, Otto became the strongest person in the village. However, one day, the Blacksmith was telling everyone that the monster inside of him was getting bigger, and the monster bursts out of him and eats his remains. Still a monster without a name, the monster then went to see Hans the Shoemaker, and like last time, he eats him from the inside out. He then entered into Thomas the Hunter, but the outcome was exactly the same as before. He then went to a fine-looking kingdom and went to the sickly prince while he was in bed. Like before, he convinces the boy to let him enter into him, and he'll make him well. The monster kept his word, and the boy is healed. The king was overjoyed that his son was finally well, and the monster decided to stay in the boy's body, because he liked the boy's name and the luxury that came with living in a castle. However, the monster's hunger grew more and more stronger each day, until eventually, the monster inside him just couldn't take it any more. He ate the king and all of his servants. Eventually, the monster consumed everyone and everything in the village. He then happens upon the monster that went west, and he tells him that he had finally gotten a name. The monster from the West replied that he didn't need a name, and liked being a nameless monster. The boy then eats the monster that came from the West. The monster was overjoyed that he finally had a name, but realized that no one was around anymore to call him by that name, which was a shame, because Johan was such a wonderful name.
