This is astonishing performance! Not only because of Mo Zinman, whose recordings are among the best balanced festivals of sound, tempi and transparence, but also showing the fascinating amount of influence of musical ideas to young Mozart, because we hear bars of his famous symphonies in awesome colours of orchestration by J. C . Bach, thus finding how Mozart transfigured them in much richer and fulfilling way to expose the musical content of his important symphonical works. I know Mozart's symphonies quite well, from all periods of creation, and there is a rather amazing resemblence in melodies, instrumentation and sound. My father, conductor of Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra, used to tell me how J. C. Bach tremendously influenced Mozart's creative forces, but untill recently I haven't payed much attention to that fact. Now, after got aquainted to Mr Zinmann's complete edition of Bach's symphonies I am perfectly aware of dimensions of that affection.

It is unbelievable what Johann Sebastian Bach past on to us apart from his own music. He gave us 4 Sons and 1 Grandson so high talented in composing who produced all this wonderful Symphonies.

It is amazing hearing how the final form of the allegro of sonata was built step by step from the ritornello form and the tonality contrasts. The fist symphony gives us a perfect example.

THANKS so much. I was looking for a more sprightly version of these works on modern instruments (never much cared for period instrument winds) than the excessively laid-back performances of Gmür on Naxos. Zinman has wonderful tempos and a marvelous lightness of touch. And thanks for the timings--couldn't have asked for more!

Lovely.there is just something so unique and beautiful and joyful about his music.not to disrespect anyone,but his music satisfies me even when the big names cant.i have to admit that i always feel compassion for the unfortunate ones also and so it does bother me that people turned their back on this wonderful composer.but who the heck cares about what the world likes.i seldom care and this is no diferent.i will just folow where my heart goes and if it pleases me and its not wrong then thats whats most important.the world didnt see the value in him in the end but mozart saw his value and so do i

You do not have to apologise for enjoying this fine music - though I do think there are better recordings available than these. Your last sentence says it all, Mozart revered JC - and with good reason - and his music more than satisfied him; you are in good company!

...wow - the Bach family fertilized the music scene of their time... do they have any competition in this? I learned that Johann Christian was the first and possibly most important teacher of Mozart... harmonies, speed and an exuberant optimistic flavour underlying the compositions gives it away! (listen to this and early Mozart works - its undeniable)... I always feel fresh, excited and full of joy after listening to his music... :)

Together with his brother CPE and other great composers, JC release the Baroque style to start the classisism that got the top with Haydn and Mozart. Mozart learnt a lot of JC, as can be heard in these symphonies. Marvelous, thank you.

"John" Bach died in poverty at the age of only 46 but left us a wonderful legacy in his own music and, of course, through Mozart. Just think what he might have achieved if he had lived longer.

The incipit of the first one (Symphony In E-Flat, Op. 18 No. 1) rensembles so much the beginning of the Mozart's 35 (Haffner) K385

It's EXACTLY like it. I'm sure Mozart copied it. BTW Mozart studied with JC Bach...and used many of his methods.

Haffner dates from 1782, the year of Johann Christian Bach's death. It surely is some kind of tribute, as one can hear in the second movement of concerto K. 414 (still from 1782) which quotes the overture to La Calamita dei Cuori.

WF Bach’s works are very interesting, but have nothing to do whatsoever with the Romantic world or aesthetics of Schumann, Chopin, Mendelssohn, and Liszt, et al.

Sodality...I'm not familiar with the painting & don't know who the artist was, but the subject is the rape of Europa. This ancient Greek & Roman myth became associated with the founding of Europe as part of the 'civilized' world & was a common subject of Euro. art during the Renaissance & following centuries. The painting appears to be Flemish or Dutch, probably 18th c. (I can't see it very well on my cell phone screen so can't tell much more about it than that.) Hope this helps.
