I love his very french approach to distinctly german music
@johnwoe1829
@johnwoe1829 5 месяцев назад
His very french approach to the english Suite is due to reason of the suite containing more french elements than german/italian/english, even if Bach himself was german. It remains rather unclear as to why they are called ‘English’. According to the first Bach biographer, Forkel, they were dedicated to an English aristocrat whose name is not given. They are also stylistically linked to the six harpsichord suites by the French composer Charles Dieupart, who lived in London.

The BWV 944 fantasia works surprisingly well with the Suite’s prelude. I suppose the Suite prelude and the 944 fugue are about the same speed though, so it makes sense. A great performance, and a good choice.

And, he worked on the instrument for several hours, changed the voicing, added to the clothe pads above the jackrail, just adjusted the instrument to his liking so he could be sure to deliver the best results. Thank you so much for sharing a glimpse of your intimacy, of your space, of your environment and above all your masterful interpretive poetry! Everything about your art of playing is absolutely stunning... The technical mastery guided by surgical precision (the horizontal position of the hands in relation to the keyboard and the absence of wrist movements so typical of pianists), the adoption of vigorous and energetic times in the movements fast and lyrical times in slow movements, the brilliant and historically informed ornamentation, the phrasing and articulation that sound to me just perfect and in the right measure and balance... a precious wonderment! Please, if it's not ask too much, record the harpsichord suites (French and English) and the Partitas of Bach...! (in fact, I would love to listen Bach's complete keyboard works recorded by Pierre Hantaï). A hug from an admirer!

Bravissimo! You have 'jazzed' it (free treatment of material and even composing pre-prelude) and 'Frenched' (the adding of trills etc. to those written) the German's serenity of Bach. Chapeau to the non conventional, daring interpretation and strong preference to sound-choices (register-changing and octave doubling at the right amount). Sometimes during the performance I felt that you have 'spoken' with this suite, as if the notes were words. I liked your tempo choices to each one of the chapters. They felt very right to my own taste: not rushing too much here, not slowing too much there. Thanks for uploading this special performance.
