Persischer Marsch (Persian March), Op. 289, is a march in G minor composed by Johann Strauss II in the autumn of 1864. The composer conducted the first Viennese performance of the march in December 1864 at a festival concert in the Vienna Volksgarten to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his debut as a composer.

The history behind this masterpiece is as interesting as the music itself. Naser al din Shah ( One of the kings of Iran from Qajar dynasty) decided to ask Austria to help Iran build a modern army and teach them how to make canon. At that time Russia had made us a lot of trouble by attacking and invading our territory. So the king went to Austria and asked for their help. Austrian army asked Johann Strauss to make a march music for the visit. This is what he masterfully composed. And for those who are curios what happened next.... well.... Austria didn't help us because Russia knew what was going on and used its leverages to make them back off.
@sir_humpy

It's a pretty story, pity it's absolute bullshit. Strauss wrote this march in 1864 for his 9th "pavlovian" season in a place near St. Petersburg in Russia where he presented it on July 11th. THEN he smartly dedicated it to the Shah and got a medal for it. The Shah didn't visit Europe until 1873 so he actually heard it 9 years after Alexander the II.

@@aahmadov Pure pan-Turk poppycock. This piece MAY have drawn _inspiration_ from whatever Turkish song, but it's not _based_ on anything. It draws on clichéd ideas of what the Europeans thought Oriental/Middle Eastern music sounds like. And no, there isn't any magical song that has magically survived throughout millennia among all Turkic speaking peoples by some damn miracle. And what on earth does Qajars being Turkic have to do with anything???

Fun fact: the theme in the B section in B flat major is taken from Glinka's Ruslan and Rudmila. Glinka heard the theme from Khosro Mirza when the iranian team was in St.petersburg to apologize to Tsar nicholas I.The name of the melody is Kalenin Dibinde bir tash olaydim . A folk melody still sung in Azerbaijan and Turkey... Yes fath ali shah was turk , so were all the qajar dynasty.

I once scored this for my high school band. My brother had a solo on bass clarinet in that opening bass part (the octaves). Oh and I have Persian heritage. Sounds like a European trying to mimic the janissary sounds of the Mid East, but there’s so much more tonality than a harmonic minor scale melody in the Persian sound. They are a quarter tone culture too.
