Trio for clarinet, cello and piano Op. 114 (1891), Johannes Brahms (1833-1897).
Juan Enric Lluna, clarinet
Lluis Claret, cello
Josep Colom, piano
I. Allegro (00:00)
II. Adagio (7:30)
III. Andantino grazioso (14:51)
IV. Allegro (19:18)
The Clarinet Trio in A minor, Op. 114 is one of four chamber works composed by Johannes Brahms featuring the clarinet as a primary instrument. It was written in the summer of 1891 for the clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld, and is considered by scholars as part of a rebirth for the composer who in 1890 declared his String Quintet in G Major to be his final work.
The work calls for clarinet, piano, and cello, and is one of the very few in that genre to have entered the standard repertoire. It was written for Clarinet in A, which can also be substituted by viola.
The overall mood of the piece is somber but includes both romantic and introspective qualities. Music historians and scholars have admitted that the trio is "not among the most interesting of his compositions"[1] The work incorporates a considerable amount of arpeggio patterns in its theme, complimented by conversation like passages in the upper register of the cello.[1] Perhaps due to this lack of interesting material, Op. 114 has been overshadowed by another one of Brahms' chamber works written for Mühlfeld- the Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Op.115.
However, it is very clear in the music that Brahms absolutely adored the playing of Richard Mühlfeld, and that this adoration made its way into the trio. Eusebius Mandyczewski, a scholar and friend of Brahms, wrote of the trio that "It is as though the instruments were in love with each other."
I don't own the scores nor the audio shown in the video.

Brahms style is unique in melody line...simple but difficult to grasp. No composer writes like him, it is simple musical poetry. He is not writing a concerto but a unified trio so interwoven. It seems dull but not at all...it is rich texture balanced with artist genius.

Brahms is one of the best classical composers who ever lived as his music is not only romantic but the harmony and difficulty shows the ingenuity of the composer

Very well played. I don't agree with the traditional assessments; the piece is not uninteresting, merely subtle. Muhlfeld was known for his sweetness of tone; Brahms jokingly called him "Fraulein Klarinette." This piece exploits that, until the last movement when he brings out the vigor which will characterize the F minor sonata. I have performed all three of the clarinet works with piano, and when immersed in them I feel I am given a glimpse of one of the most profoundly musical and humane minds ever to grace this lovely blue planet. Thanks for posting, this and everything.

"Traditional assessments"? Is there is a tradition of calling this uninteresting? Luckily, I have not heard of such a tradition. But you are right: it is subtle. I remember listening to it at least 20 times before "getting" it. Then it became my favorite among Brahms's chamber works (at least for some time).

@@PaulVinonaama Apparently there were many criticisms on this piece at the time it was first introduced, according to Wikipedia. Many music critics at that time didn't seem to like some of the composing techniques Brahms were using in this piece.

@@quanhoangclarinettist6225 Maybe it was the karma of Brahms (and Joachim and Clara Schumann) attitude towards the late compositions of Schumann, e.g. his violin concerto? In both cases, unfair judgements in my feeling.

The outer movements can be somewhat dense in texture at times. However, the middle movements are exquisitly approachable. The Andantino 3rd movement, especially, has the simple loveliness one finds in the late Brahms piano pieces, opp. 116-119.

A very fine performance. Was it originally recorded in analogue? It has a sonorous sound that only analog or Hartshorn Classical digital recordings have bee able to capture so far. All the nuances are preserved so well. Nice musicians!
