Johannes Brahms - WoO 1, 21 Hungarian Dances (for Solo Piano) (Alvanis)

Pf: Louis Demetrius Alvanis
Provided to RU-vid by The Orchard Enterprises
℗ 2007 and 2003 Meridian Records (for Dances 1-10 and 11-21 respectively)
Note: Some sources say Brahms only made solo piano arrangements of the first ten dances. However, IMSLP (and also the edition I used, G. Schirmer 1893) claims that the complete Hungarian Dances for solo piano was completed by Brahms, of which they give a few editions. So, I personally do not know what exactly to believe. In my perspective, Dances 11-21 seem to be arranged very similarly to Dances 1-10, so this is either the work of Brahms or someone unknown who did a superb job of understanding his mindset.
TLDR: We can be sure that the first ten dances were arranged by Brahms. The last eleven are a bit ambiguous without more information.
July 7, 2021 EDIT: It has been confirmed that Dances 11-21 were arranged for solo piano by Theodor Kirchner. His arrangements were published in 1881, by Nicolaus Simrock. Thank you so much to RU-vid user, pizzacheeto, for directing me to this information!

BRAHMS... people often pay so much attention to Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Listz etc ... but somehow many people forgot to mention your name. You were an amazing Composer. RIP Brahms.....

Yes, it's true, but we should look wider at this amazing thing: Hungarian dances... the matter is: only 3 of 21 are the original Brahms melodies, most are either Hungarian folk tunes, or melodies of other composers and/or arrangers... but, thanks to Brahms, who polished them, they became a phenomenon of the musical culture of the world!

Mozart was a genius but I have nowhere near the level of personal connection with his music as I have with Brahms'... whose musical output is significantly smaller but also of a much higher average level of complexity. Many of Mozart's works are, although perfectly crafted, written for performance by amateurs. His chamber music and piano solo music does not require the performers being virtuosos or even top level amateurs, and if you're a skilled amateur you can probably learn to play his piano or violin concertos, depending on your instrument. My mother was a violin teacher for decades and several of her students played Mozart concertos when they were in their mid to late teens after 6-7 years of lessons. As a pianist, mostly self-taught, I learned the 23rd piano concerto from memory, including the orchestral cues, in 3 months. Tried Brahms 2nd and that's far beyond my reach. Brahms' demands of the performer(s) tend to be a lot higher and the music is way more complex and seems less formulaic than Mozart's. Mozart almost always uses the very same device to move back into the recapitulation of the first theme in his sonata form works: a pedal point with a trill on a sustained V7 chord. By comparison, the music of Brahms follows the same sort of procedural approach but he takes many more detours via distant keys, chromaticisms, and mood swings between contrasting groups of thematic ideas.

The arrangements of 11-21 were done by Theodor Kirchner; too bad the publisher of the music did not credit him, his arrangements are just stellar! Or maybe the arrangements were similar in style to the composer's transcriptions of 1-10, so much so that they never doubted that it could be Brahms himself that had arranged the rest as well.

Of course... This dances (the themes) are not original by Brahms. People should know this in 2121... Brahms took, mostly, folk tunes that he had heard from his youth in taverns and, maybe also, works or themes by popular composers. But mostly folk gypsy tunes.
@CatkhosruShapurrjiFurabji

It is sometimes said that Brahms plagiarized another composition by his 5th hungarian dance, now I come to know what they mean; not at all to imply that he did steal it.

@palestrinabrahmsfan
@palestrinabrahmsfan 6 месяцев назад
not surprising, because these were based on Hungarian folk melodies. Many composers did something like this in their career (e.g. Beethoven, Liszt himself), either as arrangement, paraphrases, improvisation, or other models. Sometimes they did this because such materials sold well (exotic, suitable to play at home), sometimes it was due to cultural pride. Therefore, people who think he copied from Liszt or Chopin or other composers should think a bit. (This is not directed at you)
