Always interesting. So glad we have this technology today to understand the process of Vermeer. Will check out the February 2023 exhibition on Vermeer's works ~
The Milkmaid is one of my favorite paintings, i'm a bit surprised by the frame which is very wide and prominent and can be easily distracting for such a small painting.
The woman is a Kitchen Maid. A Milk Maid worked in the dairy with the cows and would not be found in the home. This figure is merely pouring milk. It does not make her a Milk Maid !
Renzo - Does it really matter whether she's a milk maid or a kitchen maid? You're getting lost in the minutia of the video regarding this painting. It's an original Vermeer.
@@alexsmith5936 I didn't get lost in minutia. I watched the video. I made a copy of the original. I know it very well.. Vermeer did not give it a name. We do not have either milk maids or kitchen maids as such now. But in the 1600's they were very common positions and titles. One would never mistake one for the other. It matters that the figure in the painting is not a milk maid because she is NOT a milk maid. If she were slicing bread, we wouldn’t refer to the painting as “The Bread Maid”! Her milieu is the kitchen. All of her work is done in the kitchen! She is a Kitchen Maid!
Eventhough you are correct, but whether you like it or not, it is the most common used title of this painting today. It's more convienient than kitchenmaid because you know right away what picture it is about.
very interesting to see the work done behind the scenes - interesting where the blue colour comes from - sad that such a beautiful colour came from such a volatile place today - very fortunate to see 10 Vermeer Paintings exhibited all together at same time in Dublin, Ireland in our National Gallery -wonderful opportunity - paintings are so beautiful
