This guy *KILLS* it in any genre he chooses. Metal, rock, pop, bluegrass, country, blues, jazz, or Bosnian Church music (if there were such a thing) this guy can kick ass as he wishes. Fabulous talent.
John 5 is awesome. As a metal fan and player I can appreciate everything he does. Simply put, he is a hybrid mix of every top player from every genre of music combined. A humble guy on top of that just makes the guy easy to appreciate his talent.
What’s so amazing about John 5 is he can play as fast and shreddy as anyone but he ALWAYS plays a good melody too, he’s never just wanking off just to show how fast he can play. I’ve never seen anyone make a Tele sound like he does
Dan Sherwood Ha ha. Actually just shared John 5’s Chicken Pickin’ Banjo Lick video to a friend saying how it makes me laugh every time I see it. Good stuff!
Devin Townsend IS truly one of the best newer metal guitarists & songwriters ever. I mean I love Tool & other new (not "nu," New..) metal bands; but Strapping Young Lad is seriously underrated. (& Devin's solo work too..)
He is considered one of the best guitar players out there. He played for Marilyn Manson and now he plays for Rob Zombie. Tow metal legends. So how is he underrated?
Would kinda like to see whoever posted a dislike to this sit down next to John 5 with a guitar in their hands and top what he played here. Would be pretty damn funny!
I like him as a metal guitarist, but hot damn, his country/blues stuff is just as badass. He needs to make a whole album with stuff like this and Behind the Nut Love. He's got a fantastic southern sound
The new country sound this is much better than that rap country music this is good john 5 is very talented I'm studying his licks on RU-vid and I play my fender telle and my bass guitar and jam with some of his licks
It's amazing how he manages his pick! At 1:56 he tucks it between his fingers to use his thumb and index finger separately, then at 2:00 he retrieves it and goes back to picking. Then at 2:05 he presumably puts the pick in his mouth and does the two-finger tapping, then at 2:18 he retrieves it and goes back to picking.
There is absolutely no doubt that this man has incredible playing skills plus a very versatile repertoire. And I'm SURE I've never heard this song with this much overdrive before!
What talent...... I knew John 5 was good but this really blew my mind....... He would give Brett Mason a run for his money..... No wonder Rob Zombie wanted him in his band...... I'm going to South Bend, Indiana to see John 5 play with his own band...... Very cool!!!!!!!
Lol As a fellow telecaster player... just holding one, no matter what kinda music you dig and play... you will, even if it's just once and only goofing around... will get the urge to play good ole boy country music at least once in your life, just from owning one and holding one lol...
Saw him at the HOB in Myrtle Beach, SC on February 21, 2020. Opened for Queensryche. What a talent. The guy brought the house down!!!! Whole show was great.
he mentions HeeHaw as a major influence {seriously}. And that show had some serious cutting edge musicians.Roy Clark was one of the best ever, and he could fly on the fret board.
fckth3systm , you just ain't whistling dixie, my friend. Guys like Jerry, Chet, Albert Lee and Mr. Ricky Skaggs can do this in their sleep. john5's version has absolutely zero feel or soul.
Hes one of those guys who plays this stuff as a joke and not the deep style that it is. Its played as a gimmick. Its the stockest of the stock chickin pickin licks and hes called a master. Lets not bring up guys like Jerry Reed when youre talking about John 5, the country guitar equivalent of blackface.
Yeah, yeah, yeah... Randy Rhodes.... Many have done it waaaaay before Randy too. People have blown him WAAAY out of proportion because he did like what, 2 albums? Do not get me wrong, he was extremely talented, but in death his legend grew WAAAAY beyaond what he actually did. John 5 and Ritchie Kotzen are two of the most versatile amazing players around right now.
WTF!!!!. I dont get it! No, I mean I do get it, I just dont understand how some of this stuff is humanly possible. Super human ability I guess. I'm a huge fan. Now, I need a few minutes to process this.🤔🤔🤔🤔
Love the cheesy back track that serves as a trampoline for him to GO OFF! This guy is really one the most versatile and facile players that's ever lived.Kudos to you Mr. 5 for devoting yourself to this discipline. I love watching and hearing you play.
You know what makes john 5 special? while everyone argues about how great/bad, underrated/overrated he is, he is probably watching some 15 year old on RU-vid going "man that's a fantastic riff! let me grab my guitar and practice that a bit, could use something new to play" Hes a musician that happens to be a famous guy, not a famous guy who happens to be a musician, get what I'm saying?
He’s John 10 now you are complete now my son go and do what’s right in Gods invisible sight he’s not underrated he’s in some of the hottest acts out you really mean why don’t people play him more because no lyrics If you want Elton’s johns status gotta have endearing words people find virtuoso annoying or haughty for cocky players in 10’’s case he’s just bored not super cocky Give Brian hell John 10
Even if I could play like that, do you think there's real value, real feel, in this type of playing ? What's the point, other than to show off your technical ability ? Yes, guys like this do have talent, and there is a place for kick-ass, in-your-gut guitar playing. But there's more feel, more emotion, in ten notes played by B.B. King, and others like him, than guys like John 5, Zach Wylde, and others who throw down countless numbers of notes.
Hmm. One of those things that shows a huge amount of technical skill, but just doesn't sound anywhere near as awesome as the original Hank Garland. Props for technique, though.
I doubt if there is any music on earth this guy can't play. I was front row at a Rob Zombie show; and although he looked enthusiastic, I got the impression he could have played those songs with his toes instead of his fingers. Pays the bills I suppose. 🤣
@thatguy1035 i've several. a Washburn ps1800, and a project built custom flying v. booth use grover tuners and it goes out of tune if i do those behind the nut bends.
