He did it after his eyes were opened . In the movie the scene before that his girlfriend dumps him. And thanks to his adversary (Nana's character ) her real face and the real face of the supposedly "close" people. Same applies for Nana's character after his wife sharp argument exposed the damage he was causing to his family when he tried to damage John and it opened his eyes, but it was too late for a reconciliation with John at that point.
