John Adams originally composed 'Shaker Loops' for string septet as a modular score that required a conductor to direct the ensemble to move from one module to the next. This version was later 'withdrawn' and replaced by a second edition that had the number of module repeats written out.
This recording - made on December 15th 1978 - is of a performance by the San Francisco Conservatory New Music Ensemble as conducted by the composer who was director of the ensemble at the time.

Could someone please explain the conceptual difference between this performance and the one we all know? I understand Adams 'withdrew' this version (not really sure what that actually means), and certainly the first movement sounds very similar but also very different, but what was it about this version of the score that Adams was so unhappy with?

Whoa -- the Original Modular Version (OMV) is the only one worth listening to. And anyone who cant clearly see that is a pedantic fool and should not be allowed to listen to music.
