Despite scoring 63 goals in 104 games, Liverpool famously decided to sell John Aldridge to Real Sociedad in September 1989.
Aldo recalls here how he came to learn of the club's decision and the hurt he felt from his beloved boyhood club.

Liverpool didn’t need to do that to Aldo. I was shocked to see Liverpool letting go such a great scorer and loyal player who still had so much to offer. It wasn’t like he was 35, he had many good years left, also when Souness sold Beardsley, that was a bad decision too. Glad Aldo is still passionate about Liverpool!

First Iv’e heard of Aldo’s leaving Liverpool circumstances & I’m a bit shocked, he was a great centre forward for us even though it was for only just over 2 years, he deserves more credit & respect for what he had done in his time at the club, he had more to offer than his future replacements - Rosental & Speedy….. No disrespect meant but Aldo has LFC running through his veins YNWA Aldo

im not a liverpool fan, but he did walk alone he was kicked out. i heard liverpool fans singing youl never walk alone before and during the champions league final against real madrid. luis karius made afew awful mistakes on the night, yet he was left to walk alone after real madrid's 3rd goal, hes a human being who didn't pick himself, he was picked by your manager. After that match he was ABANDONED and forced away to walked alone. and was loaned off to some other clubs. what does it mean when yous sing 'you never walk alone'? is it only if you play well and win things? no-one sang to him that night that he would never walk alone. In my opinion, its just a great melody and words, its not backed by empathy. maybe i got it wrong mate, just how it seems to look to us on the outside! Peace out

@@BelfastManUtdTherapyhe wasn’t good enough to play in goal for the club. That is all that is. That summer, Liverpool bought what turned out to be the best goalkeeper on the planet, and after Karius’ traumatic time between the sticks for the club, there was no way he could stick around. Wouldn’t have been right for him, nevermind the club. He actually played in a friendly at Tranmere that pre season, and was given a HUGE amount of support by the fans, while also making more awful mistakes. His head was not in the right place. You could argue he’s still not recovered from it even now.

The majority of fans will always do their best to support the current squad of players, they'll have their favourites and others they think should be moved on. Some fans can be very vocal about this. You could see the pain in Aldo's eyes as he recounts his ordeal leaving LFC! As a young LFC fan, I'd hoped to see Aldo and Rushie playing. Wasn't a big fan of Beardsley, but he still delivered. @@guffy2339 Of course Aldo was more prolific based on the type of player he was. Beardsley was more about providing for others as a deep lying forward. Using your 'logic' Kenny Dalglish wasn't that that good a forward because of his strike rate but that totally ignores context. A lot of lesser players had better strike rates than King Kenny. Beardsley leaving hurt me more than Aldo as a kid, because we simply did not have a player that could do what he did. At least with Aldridge, Rush could replace his goals but nobody was replacing Peter Beardsley's skills and strengths. One of Souness' biggest fuck ups considering Peter was still smashing it for Newcastle well into the 90s, when we could have done with him badly in that era. Beardsley and Fowler in tandem would have been something to behold.

True that mate. I seen him on an after dinner speech. It was after the Hillsborough charity game at Celtic, Aldo and his wife were having a drunken domestic and making a show of themselves. Marina went over to tell them to go to bed and Aldo told her where to go. Says himself he knew he was finished after that. Don't know why he's telling a different story here

We'd moved on from Rush. Barnes & co providing for Aldo from the wing. Goals galore. Rush came back and but there was no down the middle world class supply anymore.

John shouldn't beat himself up over Kenny's decision to sell him because history tells us he was a below average manager only scraping a single league title by the skin of his teeth he was great player Kenny but a shocking inadequate manager who had abundance treasure at his finger tips and wasted the opportunity afford him he is to blame for Liverpool downfall in the rankings. Some people would say he was piss poor and I would agree with this perspective

The team with Barnes, Beardsley and Aldo played some of the best football by a team in memory. Was that possible with a poor manager. Also Hillsborough took a large toll mentally on the players and especially Kenny.

Crikey, didn't know this. Always a Liverpool great in my book. An even bigger one now. This still hurts him now which makes me sad, unless he had a proper cold in the vid! Never forgotten Aldo. One of us... unfortunately, owners are about business.. not local loyalty however well you are playing. Surprised they dealt with the situation in that way. Glad you got a good payoff... least you deserved.

We can all agree that Dalglish was a superb player but he's overrated as a manager. He was successful as a player-manager simply because the boot room was there keeping things going as before. He had one moment of success @ Blackburn because in those days no-one could compete with Jack Walkers millions. Failure followed @ Blackburn, Newcastle, Celtic and once again @ Liverpool. Terrible way to treat a Liverpool lad in John Aldridge. There's the myth that LFC is a family smashed to pieces right there. Shame on you Kenny!!!

I remember it well. John was a top notch striker, top bloke. Liverpool's dominance ended when they appointed Dalglish as manager (and subsequently that other managerial kid, Souness). Bob Paisley advised Dalglish for the first couple of years. But when Kenny was left on his own, his poor managerial skills were left exposed. Forcing Aldridge out on Liverpool was a crime against humanity. Pure and utter madness.
@johnwignall5413
@johnwignall5413 5 месяцев назад
Bang on! The biggest reason we went 30 years without winning a title was the utter mess Dalglish left, which Souness couldn't clear up. Signings went from Barnes, Beardsley and Aldridge, to Jimmy Carter and David Speedie!🙄. His treatment of Peter Beardsley at the end was little better!
@multitrackers3770

@@johnwignall5413 absolutely. I was just talking to a mate here the other day, about the awful way Dalglish treated Beardsley. Dalglish was an exceptionally poor manager. To take the top resources he had at Anfield. and throw it all away, and so quickly, took some doing.

Definitely one of biggest mistakes by Liverpool selling Big John after winning the league, but winning golden boot award. Imagine Liverpool do that after winning the league then sell Mo Salah afterwards.

Bad Decision by Dalglish and Liverpool to let John go, he was an absolute Legend who every Liverpool Fan Worshiped and Loved . No player should ever make the mistake of putting the Club before themselves. Liverpool don’t give a flying Fcuk about anything but the MONEY ! The the Players and the Fans mean nothing when there’s Money to be had. Every Player should grab every Penny they can from these greedy clubs and forget about the word Loyalty , it means nothing. Dalglish who I e always idolised has just gone down in my estimation of him after listening to Aldo. Shankley, Paisley, Evans, Fagan, and definitely not Klopp or a few of the others would never ever have done to Aldo what Kenny Dalglish did to him, no matter what the Board of Directors said This one is a Stain on Dalglish I’m afraid, a very dirty big one. We still Love you Aldo Lad. YNW .......not ever 👍🏼❤️
