Kentucky native John Bell Hood fell in love with Texas during the early part of his U.S. Army career. After secession, he joined the Confederate Army and listed Texas as his state even though he had yet to adopt it as home. In this passage from his autobiography, "Advance and Retreat: Personal Experiences in the United States and Confederate States Armies," Hood reveals his journey, and along the way his meeting with Col. Robert E. Lee.
