*A complete & concise drum lesson on Bonham drum kit-played triplets (proper Bonham sequence LEFT-RIGHT-KICK). Please also see: • JOHN BONHAM TRIPLETS *... for great exercises to perfect this pattern. *Also, I have over 140 John Bonham/LZ Drum Lessons and Infovids on my channel at / bonzoleum .
**This video is the "how to" for the basic, yet all-important, tom-toms/bassdrum combo triplet riff made very popular by John Bonham.
I have a few videos on "Bonham triplets" posted, but I feel this is the most complete and comprehensive of the Bonham Triplet tutorials from a learning/fundamental standpoint.
I have included in the video a link to another 'Triplet Video' I recently made, where I explain my 'isolating the corners' concept.

steve kuhlman I find that if you’re doing a quick fill, it’s easier to start with the bass drum. However, in a solo, the optimal sound and also the best way to keep it going is starting with the hands

I found doing the triplets with the kick so difficult. I tried your "Isolating The Corners" technique and it is working miracles in a very short time. It even allowed me to lead with the left hand which is against my normal wiring. Terry, I think that is genius, it really is amazing the way that it works. It just takes a little patience and the speed increases. I have always found it easier to count triplets as 1 Ba Da, 2 Ba Da, 3 Ba Da but never used the kick in the mix. Thanks a million for that technique.

I dont ever comment on stuff but I just really wanted to say that this is the type of drum instruction ive been looking for. your video on the bonham triplets (which i didnt know that other people called them that) was a huge help. Ive been trying to get those down for what seems like forever now. Im like 80% percent of drummers (leading with my right, as i am right handed). Ive tried it leading with my left and i think its sounds more authentic but it feels so weird.

I like your demeanor on this video. Too many guys are totally full of themselves. You present your self as one of my buddies trying to share something cool. I enjoyed watching your video very much. If you don't mind an opinion though... what's weird to me about your theory on which hand to start on, is that the shuffle or train beat is different than the triplets as follows - if you lead with the left hand on the train, the down beat is on the right hand. With the triplet, if you lead with the left hand, the left hand is on the down beat. So, in effect, they would be the opposite of each other. This is not necessarily a bad thing though. I believe that everything you do right handed you should also be able to do left handed. If you can master everything both lefty and righty, you become an incredibly versatile player.

Learned to do the triplet thing around the standard drum kit leading with my left from listening to Mitch Mitchell moreso than John Bonham however. Listening to Hey Joe you can hear Mitch use this pattern slowed way down and you can tell he's leading with the left to get the descending riff and they way he does it and tunes his kit is instructive and amazing! Thanks for the great lesson Bonzoleum!

Very helpful !! I have tried for years to duplicate Bonzo's triplets but never had it explained by starting the fill before the initial down beat. I am right handed and always have started with the right. You are correct, it is very difficult to lead off with the left. But treating the left as prior to the down beat helps get the groove going..

I´m right handed playing on a right handed kit and I lead with my left hand. This causes problems when doing a fast fill and ending it on a cymbal on the right side of the kit. My solution for about 20 years has been to do a "double-tap" on the last stroke with the left hand. I´m trying to correct this and practice leading with the right hand. Love your videos!

bonzoleum, you're a great teacher. Unpretentious and natural. Love it. I tend to lead with my right hand, but sometimes I find myself leading with the bass drum i.e. bass, right, left, bass right left etc. Should I avoid this because it's technically incorrect, or is it OK. I think it sounds OK and nobody I play with notices the difference. What do you think?
@5ped0fs0und5

I have a pretty complicated sense of coordination and leading, with the train beat that you mentioned, i lead with the left, but when i go around the kit i lead with the right, and sometimes left, but then with the triplets i can really only do it with the right hand on lead.

@rsalg1203 I think there are definitely certain physical actions that for certain people trigger some sort of a short-circuit type of thing. I would recommend using a metronome to try and find the BPM (the actual velocity threshold) that it starts to fall apart, and then practicing to the metronome up to that threshold and see if you can slowly move that threshold higher (play it faster)...

Hi, I like your teaching ability. And had a drum question outside of triplets. What does a drummer normally do when the organist is playing a lot of flat notes fast? I know when their playing them slow or in 4/4 time. Its much easier to use brushes and cymbal work. Though how about playing a long with the organist just playing flat notes. What would you normally do?
