Once you figure out how to play this it literally takes you into some kind of trance. I learned to play by watch his videos over and over. There are no video tutorial you basically make your own version. Its nice to play for 12 - 13 minutes. The feeling you get when playing this song is an emotional roller coaster.
@@kennylawrence6059 yea man, that was years ago. One of the first few project songs I got down. I havent posted this video but this was me 9 years ago. It inspired my playing style. Fun song to play and its great . Look up John Butler Ocean 6string guitar Cover by Fuentes. Its not like his version but I got close lol Im 25 now and that was me when I was 16.
"really tired of writing essays about art i just wanted to make it ya know" awsome..pure and talented musicians like john butler are so rare these days
Seen it live ... noone was yelling, it was one special moment you rarely have in a lifetime, this song is telling much more than any lyrics. Have a peaceful life :)
Recently saw Xavier Rudd and no one could manage to close their mouth and pay attention during Spirit Bird and that was where he set his guitar down, gave the crowd his blessings and ended the show early. I cannot believe that John Butler was able to put up with the audience. Especially during his most heartfelt piece. That just shows how much composure this man has, I've yet to listen to any of his work and not be blown away. Big Love John Butler, keep spreading what you do!
I think he's just so deep in what he plays, this tracks must mean so much to him, he's never even here anymore, he's in his music, at the bottom of his soul, living the thing, and that's just it. But yeah, if that was me, I would have stop playing, rise, spit on the crowd and get the fuck off. =P
Best version of this song. This is one of my first favorited RU-vid videos and I keep coming back to it. I think you need to rename it to include the proper song name 'ocean' so more people can find it. An absolute masterpiece
Thank you, Thank YOU; being one of those people from New Orleans You and your awesome love and talent has brought more than words can say to my life. GOD Bless always
i have seen this live at big day out and the crowd there were quieter than this crowd for sure, id get super pissed off if i had people clapping and yelling over this masterpiece.
I was on the front railing about 10 feet away from him this past Halloween for their Stubbs show. No one near me said a fucking word during this one...
I like how it is only the guitar, but still fills up the room with music. Nothing else is needed but the guitar and his foot for such a great music piece. This truly show the greatness of John Butler.
john is the best musican ive been blessed to see live or on my comp, this is no solo its what he played when he was younger outside of his home town in australia . it made him known, i went to one of his concerts and i will never forget it, it's was that increable. much love john, and to your wife and kids. come back to boston soon.
John says in Treat Yo Mama: "Don't call me hippy cause the way that i look,Cause I got a recipe and you know I can cook. And I come fourth with only good intent you know I am Heaven bound but I'm surely hell bent On getting the job done like I know I should,Get the job like my mama told me to. Only one thing can remember she said You gotta earn all of your respect." Seems like it relates.
My mum used to play this to me when I was in the womb. It always strikes me so profoundly, I get so emotional and elated, not able to help myself but stomp my foot in time and grin at the cheers and whoops from the crowd.
if you were there you cant be quit. you get loaded with emotions because it is so wonderful. it is really hard to be quit when the most talented musician of our time is playing. i couldnt be quit, too
Ignorance.....Ugh. Its not like he was playing in the beer garden. LOL. Great guy, awesome song, wicked heartfelt sharing of his art. Thankfully there are other videos of him playing this (slightly different of course JBT style!) and you can enjoy it without the jerk off's mumbling....Heard this a thousand times I swear, Still get trapped listening and watching...its magic.

this song is the solution to life- no matter what happens in my life i will be able to watch this and feel completely content for 13 minutes. ahh so good, amazing
Were so proud to have JB doing so well, this piece is my favourite. It absolutely catches the beauty of our special peice of country. Mooditj music JB. Pleasure to see you always.
What it's like to hear someone's bold heart on stage against the odds of a world growing hell bent on being obnoxious. Saying to hell with the ugly, and live in the beautiful. Awful... if you're Hitler
the look on his face while he's playing just makes it so much better. you can tell this man has a love for guitar, more people need to enjoy what they do as much as him. a true, true inspiration.
this video was absolutly incredible i grew up in fremantle and this song really really makes u feel like ur there he has captured the whole spirit of our great city in the song
The first time I seen John was about an hour ago watching Keith Urban perform with him at the ARIA awards. He is amazing. All I can say is WOW. Totally enjoyed it.
No matter where he plays it, no matter the version or the length, this song always moves me in a way no other song has ever done. I saw him play live in Federation Square, Melbourne. He played this song there, and as soon as he started he held the entire crowd awe-struck. The most beautiful music you had ever heard. After he came down on the crashing final note and the song abruptly stopped. The crowd, as one let lose a rapturous applause! I've never heard anything so loud. Amazing.
How can someone honestly dislike this? i enjoy vairious genres of music and still find this absolutely beautiful. just close your eyes and let this man do what he does best, find your inner beauty
this song still blows me away even after listening to it a fair few times, this JB is one of the most talented artists i think i've ever seen or heard.
His guitar-playing is quite unique, it's a great blend of tapping and finger-style. the songs are also very well written, especially this piece; ocean. I think he's where every guitarist wants to be, developed his own style and all...
When I first heard this guy it was just one his JBT albums and I played it all the way through and ejoyed it... it wasnt until I checked out his live performances on youtube before I truly appreciated him for what he can do... I gotta see this guy live someday.
We need more people promoting peace in this world... John is truely amazing (live) . He is a Legend. There is far to much hate in this world... Peace, Love, and Respect all!!! ♥~~~PEACE~~~♥
very passionate, very very inspiring individual, anyone can tell he is the path, every word from his mouth and every note that comes from his guitar..it's as good as church to me..a true inspiration to me a fellow guitarist..i will be like me..lifes not about whats better than!!!
Waiting for him to hit the UK again !!! althought tempted to go see he him in the far east cos this guy is the man!!! his skill is awesome and makes everyone stop and listen, good job JB!
I love how even at the start of the vid, when he's talking and telling his story, he can't help but fiddle/ play with the guitar. It's like an extension of his body... He is truly amazing.
This is too awesome for words. it;'s not just what he's playing..It's the way he plays it. He builds up the momentum slowly, slwoly with little sparks shooting and then more sparks and then sparks with smoke and then fires lights up and then the wind gets stronger and the hair on the back of your neck stands up and shivers go down your spine..and slowly it builds up more and more and your bones begin to rattle...
i 100% agree with you, it just amazing when he transitions to those higher notes on this solo, it really just releases so much pressure, draws so much emotion
extra le meilleur solo de guitare que j'ai jamais entendu, un pur délice pour les oreilles et pour les yeux ce type est tellement doué que se soit sur ses album ou sur scene un pur merveille
Yeah, I can tell you hes inspired me a great deal. I dont know if any of you guys watched him talk about how he got his grandfathers guitar but the sincere emotion in his eyes and the love he shows to play guitar just proves how great of an artist he really is. JBT is great but I love JBs solo acts alot!
..first time i heard this, i was awestruck. this is so amazing, no matter how he plays it. and he gets so into it, it's just raw emotion and you can't help but fall in love with this song, even if the crowd is being lame. most inspirational piece of music i've ever heard. not to mention how much it really means to him... changed my life.
