John Cage's 4'33" is often misunderstood as a joke or a musical troll, but what it really communicates is how beautiful sound itself is.

I find so much comfort in listening to "silence." One of my favorite memories is shortly before my grandmother died a few years ago, sitting on the front porch on a crisp chilly winter evening just after sunset and listening to the sounds. We live in the country so there were the sounds of the wind in the trees, an armadillo rooting through the undergrowth, the murmurs of conversation inside between my daughter, her grandmother and great-grandmother, and loudest of all, the silence in between!

I don’t know why Cage was credited with inventing this concept, when several composers did it prior to him. The first example is from the 19th Century: Alphonse Allais's 1897 Funeral March for the Obsequies of a Deaf Man, consisting of twenty-four blank measures.
@ikego98
@ikego98 5 месяцев назад
Because it's not about the concept of a silent piece, it's about the intention. That first silent composition from 1897 was meant as a joke. Other silent pieces that appeared before John Cage's had other intentions or meanings. But none before had the intention of making us attentive to the sounds around us, to our "silence" that isn't actually silence. It confronts us with the sounds around you. The hums, chirps and all the other noises that you would normally ignore. That is your "silence". Being aware of that, listening to all the sounds as they are, no just ones that are supposed to have meaning. And, maybe, make us more aware of the sounds in our everyday lives. No other silent piece prior to 4'33'' had that thought-provoking intention.
@danielgloverpiano7693
@danielgloverpiano7693 5 месяцев назад
@@ikego98 I witnessed a performance of the Schulhoff silent piece and the pianist conducted himself. It was hilarious. He exaggerated dynamics and fermatas. I thought his performance was very imaginative and it comes in the middle of the suite, so it stood out. I wonder if Cage knew any of those previous silent works? This piece is also in three movements and most “listeners” aren’t aware of that.

ok, so prior to like 5 min ago, i hadn’t heard of this. i listened to a performance of it in a theater, and now i’m thinking the people in there completely missed the point and lost out, because it was nearly silent the whole time. listening in my bedroom, i got my fan, traffic noise and birds, as well as my own breathing. it’s an interesting concept

Sounds and music can be described differently. It is a matter of opinion. Music is made up of sounds but not all sounds are music. To most, music can be described as aesthetically pleasing. Not all sound is classified this way. You can't say a performance of this at an air show would be awe inspiring. John Cage had an interesting opinion to which a lot of people will believe.

Perhaps the very definition of music might also change with time, I believe most of the things are not fixed or constant, they might change with time and I think changes should happen in this world as time progresses otherwise to me atleast the world will be a boring place to live in..

Bullshit. I hear those silent sounds everywhere all the time. When I go to a orchestra, I go there to litsen to something different from the everyday boring noise and silence in the outside world. its like modern artwork that makes no sense. Explaining it with big poetic words does not make it less dumb. What's interesting though is the long song that he wrote that will end the yr 2640, now that's art.

It's like sitting in front of an empty wall and saying "this is art" it's not, it's just a blank wall. But if you say enough bull$#*t about it, you damn well know that wall's gonna end up in a national gallery somewhere.
@markoslavicek
@markoslavicek 8 месяцев назад
No, the point is that the wall IS in a national gallery already (or somewhere alike). It's not the walls in our living rooms that counts as art but the ones displayed at the museum. According to Cage, art is an event, and without this public or spectacular element, so to say, it is just an ordinary everyday object. At the moment when we as a society gather around it, observe it, contemplate upon it, discuss it, or appreciate it - in other words, once we place an object in an artistic context - it becomes art. Art is thus our relationship to something, not the thing in itself.
