John Nelson “Jack” Carey (June 4, 1915 - November 11, 1987) was an animator and supplied character layouts during his stint at Warner Bros. Starting in 1935 as an in-betweener, Carey rose up through the ranks and became an animator in 1937, animating under the supervision of Robert "Bob" Clampett from 1937-1941. After Chuck Jones, Clampett's layout man, left to start directing his own cartoons, Carey then became responsible for creating character layouts and model sheets.
When Tex Avery left the Warner Bros. studio in 1941, Bob Clampett inherited his staff, which moved John Carey over to Norm McCabe's unit, a new director who had also been animating under Clampett. There, Carey continued to supply animation, layouts, and model sheets.
Carey was drafted into the Navy in 1943, sparking a three-year leave from the studio. He would see a return to the studio in 1946 to animate under the supervision of Robert "Bob" McKimson, who had recently been promoted to a director. John Carey carried a short stint in the Art Davis unit before returning to the McKimson unit.
After floating around Chuck Jones' and Friz Freleng's units in the early '50's, Carey then left the studio to dedicate his time to comic books, specifically churning out work for Western Publishing. Aside from drawing comics pertaining to Looney Tunes characters, Carey also dabbled with Walter Lantz characters, such as Woody Woodpecker and Andy Panda. Carey would continue his comic work, dealing with characters from the likes of Hanna-Barbera and Disney until his retirement in 1984 when Western Publishing closed. He would pass away only three years later in 1987 at the age of 72.
Carey's animation is identifiable through his firm construction, elastic motion, pill shaped eyes, and tight, appealing draftsmanship. He was an early pioneer of using smears in his work, often visible in his late '30s work under Clampett's supervision before the technique would become a common practice.
