The movie may have flopped and was panned by critics, but it changed the lives of many kids growing up in the 80's/90's. I have watched this movie literally hundreds of times-not exaggerating.
Same. Had this and Robocop on VHS and wore both tapes out. My sisters husband once asked her had she seen it and she responded “Seen it? I’ve lived it!” 😂😂😂
My (late) mother took me to see this at the cinema on my 13th birthday. Just me and her. One of the best memories I have of her because we laughed so much, then we went out for dinner and laughed right through the meal as we relived our highlights all over again.
Thts awesome man. My mom hated my taste in movies when i was young, but she would suffer through it & just enjoyed seeing me & my brother enjoy things. I miss my Mom. Anyone who still has their should love & cherish her.
My mom always loved 'Halloween' and 'The Thing.' She'd always watch them anytime one came on, they're both a couple of my favorite films ever now. I'd give my right arm just to sit and watch either with her one more time. RIP mama, miss you more and more each day.....
One of the very few movies where Hollyweird didn't emasculate Asian men like they usually do. But the whites still were the stars of the movie with Russell and Cattrall.
I'm 60 years old and I still watch this movie at least once a year with my friends or my kids... truly a masterpiece of action comedy with just enough mysticism/horror to make it interesting.
I'm 60 as well, and BTILC is one movie I also watch at least once every year. My wife recently reminded me that it's time to watch it again soon (half the year has gone by!).
Kurt Is a great guy, has great taste, he married the woman he loved, Goldie Hawn, and theyre still very much in love. he's an old school guy with old school values.
Kurt loved that Carpenter took him away from his “Disney” image that he had. JC was a guy that almost always went outside the lines and was authentic to what he was working on. Kurt is the same.
"The Thing" is probably Carpenter's best movie, but "Big Trouble in Little China" is definitely my favourite Carpenter movie. And Russel is phenomenal in both. All the actors are. It's a tragedy this didn't get the success it deserved.
"You were not put on this world to "GET IT", Mr. Burton." is one of the best lines in cinema history! this is an underrated gem of a movie! for all the big kurt russell fans, if you havent seen "used cars" yet, it is an actual must see! one of the funniest comedies ever!
This movie was a MASTERPIECE! I don't care what anyone says. This movie solidified Kurt Russell as one of the greatest actors of ALL TIME. As a young boy growing up, I had the privilege of getting to see this movie and it forever changed my standards of judgement towards any film I saw. I've prayed and hoped for the continuation of the story of Jack Burton. People even use his name for their personas online. I've run into a few "Jack Burtons" in my day and everyone of them was a cool dude. Because..."You know what Jack Burton always says? Well, Jack would look that storm right in the eye and say,.... Gimme your best shot"
Kurt Russell is great in everything he has done. He is an acting icon. He has been acting since he was a young child. Disney child star. “Follow me Boys” movie was one of my favorites. Computer who wore Tennis Shoes. Captain Ron. Soldier. Not to mention a semi pro baseball player. Interesting career.
Jack Burton is peak Kurt Russell. Kurt is great in every role he's done especially when he's working with John Carpenter but as Jack Burton, Kurt is dripping with swagger and chewing the scenery all while playing an incompetent fool. The chasm between who Jack Burton thinks he is versus who everyone else sees him as is comedy gold! This movie is completely chocked full of great quotable lines from start to finish. I would love for JC and KR to film a sequel where Jack Burton has an adventure that takes him across China. Call it.. 'New Trouble in Old China: Jack Burton Rides Again! '
@@artor9175 That's the genius of the role. He's completely incompetent. Age doesn't matter when someone can't do anything right anyway. They get to do all new was an old guy can mess things up.
He is literally doing a John Wayne impression. He was having the time of his life too. In Escape from New York he was doing a Clint Eastwood impression. Carpenter always wanted to do a western but reapected his budgets way too much to actually do a period flick.
@@caseypark69 Are there people out there who don’t think that Kurt is a good actor? Has he ever had, say, any bad reviews by critics? If so, I’d like to see some examples
This movie never skips a beat, is funnier than 99% of comedies, and is extremely quotable. If I can't decide what to watch, this is my go-to if I want to be entertained, laugh, and just have a great time.
Saw it at the cinema, and was absolutely convinced it would be a huge hit. Made absolutely no sense that it wasn't, has absolutely everything you want from an action comedy.
I saw it in cinemas too and adored it, and so did all my close friends. For months afterward we would give each other the salute hand gesture that the warriors did in the movie on the playground. Good times.
A huge film when I was a young lad. Taped it off the TV, watched it all the time, I still love it. Action, Comedy, Adventure. The commentary between Kurt n' John is utterly addictive, infectious, and hugely entertaining. Makes me love the film even more. I could listen to these Gentlemen banter like this all day.
4:07 'The fun of making the film, I feel is reflected in the movie' Truer words can't be spoken, I always felt this movie was a blast to make and it's so much fun to watch because of this I'm sure. I absolutely love Big Trouble in Little China, one of the most entertaining movies I'll ever see. Thank you Kurt Russell, John Carpenter and everyone responsible for creating this wonderful piece of work.
This is one of only two movies that I could clearly see the cast were having a great fucking time making the movie. Like you can see in their fucking face what a great time they're having. The other movie is The A Team.
@@childofthesun32 @childofthesun32 Oh yeah for sure, the A-Team was like everyone involved in that movie won a raffle to work on it haha. I think the performers and crew put more effort in and it shows too when they really love a project. I would extend that to the likes of spaceballs and Blazing Saddles but if your movie is a comedy, full of comedic actors and comedians then of course it's going to be light-hearted all around. These movies had a bit of everything and they're not strictly comedies, neither are they full of comedians and comedic actors, it's special when we see it, it gives you a good feeling beyond that of seeing a movie you really like.
This is by far one of the best movies ever made. I adore it. The writing, acting, cinematography, action and plot are all top notch. Well done fella's.
One of my very favorite movies of all time. I still have this dvd somewhere. I remember getting drunk and listening to the dvd commentary alone in my first apartment, laughing and talking to John and Kurt like I was in the room with them.
The commentary was so hilarious with these twoI listened to the commentary of Tropic Thunder la long time ago and I will say that's the funniest commentary ever. If you can find it you guys should listen to it!
One of my all-time favorite movies growing up. I bought the VHS and have watched it hundreds of times. Also watched it again a couple of weeks ago and it holds up, had a blast. Hearing they had such a great time filming it makes a whole lot of sense to me.
One of the joys of my life was introducing this movie to my 11yr old son. He loved every minute of it. The special effects, the editing, the writing, the music, all of it. What a movie
Was pretty obsessed with this movie when I was a kid. Used to try to put our straw washing basket on my head to be one of the three storms. 😂😂 Usually Rain, he was my favourite.
This is one of the most important films of all time. It is probably my favourite movie. I must have watched it 20 times in my life. It's been a favourite of mine for my entire life. Perfect casting, all around.
Me and my brothers discovered this movie randomly on one of the pay cable movie channels and loved it. We watched it numerous times after that. One of those classics that there are no modern equivalents of.
This is in my top 5 fav movies that I could watch at anytime since I was a kid. Really cool to hear Kurt and John talk a little bit about it. Thank you!!
Saw this in the theater on a first date - afterwards, we looked at each other and neither of us were sure of what we’d just seen…but I liked whatever it was. Still one of my favorites.
One can never go wrong listenin' to the Pork Chop Express. "Like I told my first wife, I says, 'honey, I never driver faster 'n I can see, besides that it's all in the reflexes".
My favourite thing about this is that the commentaries for Escape From New York, The Thing and Big Trouble were all recorded on the same exact day at Carpenter’s home. Russell brought whisky and Carpenter had beers. Gradually, each commentary becomes more unhinged, as the two become more and more drunk and disorderly. It makes it so funny to me that essentially we’re hearing two old friends get drunk and reminisce about their youths.
One of my favorite 80s movies of all time. I can still quote so much from this movie. So cool to hear from these two. You can tell they had fun with this one.
This movie is a delight. No director, living or dead, could have done it better than Carpenter. I don't know if I like this commentary, or the one they do for 'The Thing' (1982) more. Carpenter and Russell have nuclear-level charisma when they are together.
I was born in 1988 so I first saw this around 95/96 and loved it immediately I would watch it almost every day as a kid. Still have so much nostalgia for it 👌
There’s something so special about this film. Everybody I speak to who loves it and who grew up watching it lights up when they talk about it. John Carpenter, James Hong, Kurt Russell, Kim Cattrall have all talked about how special the film is to them as well. Naturally, I took it very seriously as a kid. And that’s stayed with me. I know it’s a comedy but for me it’s so much more than that and I’m so glad so many people out there feel the same way
I love that John Carpenter always enjoys talking about his movies, unlike some other directors who are sometimes evasive or regretful of their flops. This movie changed my life.
When I was a kid, late 80s maybe early 90s, this movie came on followed by the road warrior right after on some random movie channel..was summer time in the middle of the day but I was glued to the couch for 4 hrs
One of those that never ages or grows old, yet it been wit me for what seems ages and brings back memories of old. I cant tell you how many lines from this movie are just engrained and spring out of me when the moment arrives…like “howed you get up there…wasnt easy” or “its all in the reflexes…so great
If you listen to the entire commentary it comes off as two friends just shooting the breeze. I believe there was a time when John Carpenter asked about what was going on with him(Kurt Russell), and he goes on and talks about his son playing hockey. And they even talk about how people who just started listening to the commentary will be wondering what the heck is going on. They just seem to really enjoy their time together.
"Like I told my last wife, I says, "Honey, I never drive faster than I can see. Besides that, it's all in the reflexes". (takes a bite of his hoagie sandwich as he's driving). So many good quotes from this movie!
I adored this movie when I was a kid. John Carpenter was my favorite director growing up, and his collaborations with Kurt Russel are my all time favorites.
This is a perfect movie. Kurt Russell was perfect in his role. I watched this at least 5x. Great cast, direction, script, coloring, editing ... everything.
I loved this movie as a kid. I honestly have never forgotten this crazy film. In all my life. You guys knocked thsi one out of the box. I love this movie. 🎉
One of my all time favorite 80's movies. This film was just so much fun, didn't take itself to seriously and made for an awesome and super fun time! Bring back movies like this, please!
I was 14 when this came out. Back then movies like Big Trouble, Highlander, Red Dawn, etc were all high cinema to me. It was a time when I was getting too old for Disney classics but couldn't get in to see restricted movies yet, so I and my friends would try to go to anything with a PG-13 rating because we knew we'd get to see action scenes like we had never seen before.
Born in 90, watched this the first time with my parents (in the 90s). Now 34 an this is still one of the best movies ever made iv bought it 3 times since VHS died.
Ya know one my all time favorites, I watch it for a good laugh, but then I always remember it scared me quite a lot, especially the very end. No sequel thank god.
I saw this in the cinema/theater when i was 10 years old and there was so many classic 80's films around that time, but this topped everything in terms of action and comedy, Kudos to John Carpenter, Kurt Russell and co for making this gem of a film.
This is such a weird and great movie. We use to watch this at 1 am in high school. The more tired you are the funnier it gets. “Now for some more bad news, ready??”
