I purchased a John Deere 14SB in 1990. I just replaced the rear wheel adjusters because the original one's for that year were not bolted to the aluminum body they would float and that caused many years of poor wheel slop and poor performance. With the later style adjusters installed the mower runs and performs better than new. Another flaw with these mowers is the fuel tanks. Where the fuel level viewing is on those tanks they will rot out and leak there because the sun hits that area. I just replaced my tank with a used 30$ tank off ebay. The dealer wanted around 80$ w/ taxes and shipping. Im in So Cal and have not seen any used JD mowers anywhere around here.
Thanks for your input yes the JD's are very very rare to find not that they not out there it is that no one wants to sell them mine never has any problems thank God and if any should come up I will fix it .Thank you for swinging pass my channel 👍🇺🇲
Fantastic example Archie. I have 2 Silver 14SB (black handle) and a Green JX75 and a parts mule JX85...none as clean as your 'creampuff' but I do love 'em!
Thanks my Friend we are all JD Lover's and appreciate Vintage Mowers I will love to see your collection Kirk . Please make a video send me a link That will be cool i will enjoy watching them . Thank you for watching and saying your comment . Keep them alive they not made like them old gal JD'S anymore. You and I and all of us who own vintage JD's are all 1 family we know and love them and we must keep there reputation alive . 👍
I was going to brag about my trio of 14SB mowers, one has oil filter. I have 4 bags, 2 chutes and 1 mulch plug. Also have a 14PZ that I have taken some parts from.
I have had many and they were the best ever made, before them I ran Commercial Toros that had the Suzuki engines and it was my 2nd favorite.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d3l6WBepFP8.html @@TonysLawnCare215
Archie-you didn't mention the grease Zerks on the rear wheels or how the height adjusters fit into notches on the deck so will never round out like the cheap stamped steel ones on (insert almost every brand)...also, the propulsion bail is FAR superior to the plastic Personal Pace on Toro's or levers on Honda's and some Craftsmans...the propulsion bail is SOLID and allows me to operate the machine with one hand (even just a couple fingers really), walking off to the side if I am along a fence/hedge line... Also, the wheels are interchangeable - there is a heavy duty ring gear on the rear wheels that you can unbolt and rotate front to rear your wheels for longer wear before replacing...most other self pro mowers the cogs are part of the wheel and the teeth are small and the plastic is soft...my JD's still have original wheels and ring gears for 20yrs...NEVER on a big box Toro/Lawnboy etc...
Great observation my friend There are so many more great things I just did 5. And I also did not show how you can see the gas level from the outside so you can see how much gas is in the tank another Great fetcher By The old Skoo Vintage JD'S 👍
Tony, That is one Fantasic condition 14SB! You are one lucky Man. I have owned several variants of this mower. I started with a new 14SB in the mid 90's. I then moved up to the JX75 and finally I found a like-new. Commercial 2002 JX-85 severalyears ago with less than 40 hours on it and it is my Pride and Joy to this day. I gave my14SB to my Brother and besides replacing the Blade Brake Clutch Assembly, a drive belt, and a couple Wheel/Tire assemblies it runs as good as new. They don't make them like this anymore. A 14SC recently went for sale close by and I kick myself for not picking it up but I also own a Lawn Boy 10591and I don't have any more room for another Mower.
Just “discovered” a John Deere 14SB in one of our storage buildings, out of sight, behind a tractor bucket. Going to revitalize it. Excited. Doesn’t have the bags that I can find, nor the oil filter mod. The plastic behind the engine is tan, not black like yours.
I will Love to see yours ! also they are worth restoring to there glory 33 yrs old and still kicking ass china made shit wont last 2 yrs The old Silver decks are and will always be best in lawnmowers this is why people want them and very rare to find (NO ONE WANTS TO SELL THEM) To answer your ? They all come grey color I painted mine to match so black is not factory color Grey is . keep a eye out on ebay they pop up every once in a while the oil filter I had to build mine up as well the hardest find for me was the boot that covers the BBC Cable here is what it looks like very rare to find 1 Take look at the boot ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CdXU9oBrP4Q.html
By overriding the safety system on the JD the clutch and there is no emergency stop for the blade. VERY VERY DANGEROUS . you slip going down a hill on wet grass and your foot or leg slides under that deck OFF GOES YOUR FOOT CLEAN CUT OFF . GOOD LUCK Plus if you ever go to sell it 1 day it might not sell to a smart buyer
Hey Andy...if you still have your parts and didn't permanently change it-you can fix the clutch if it is the later two part clutch with a $5 grinder disc and some JB Weld... there's a great how to video on RU-vid...I've done it - it works! Have a blade clutch is super handy when emptying the bag so grass clippings don't fly in your face-not to mention the safety issues as Archie has pointed out...many pl do the blade override...I don't like it nor do I like 'Zone Starts' of cheaper mowers that I have to restart everytime I let go of the bail to pick up some litter or empty the bag...
Great video. You seem very knowledgeable on these great old mowers. I’m picking up a JX75 this weekend. It has a green deck and a 6.75hp motor. It looks very similar but no oil filter. Can you tell me anything about his model?
Pretty much the last of the good ones! You can get the oil filter adapter from some JD dealers still...I would bet that the one that fits on the Kawasaki 180 would also fit these 150 motors ...I have a couple commercial Exmark mowers with the Kai engine...I should take some measurements...I have also been using Pennzoil PZ-37 filters because I picked them up for $2/EA...and the yellow really stands out. There is a strong following on RU-vid for these machines...all really great content providers like this fine gentleman. Congrats on having the best mower ever made!
@@kirkthebeerslinger Thanks Again Kirk I really Appreciate your comment's . I will also look into that Filter from Pennzoil I think it will really make the 14SB pop in color matching the Yellow wheel's .To Bad that Filter Dont have a Deere Painted on it Thnx for that tid bit Information
I had to come back and let you know that I did get my JX75 last year at the end of the season. She is a beauty. Very nice example. Paid 400 but I think it was a good deal. But anyway the reason I cam back is because today was my first time mowing with it and I’m super happy! This thing is a beast in every way. I love this mower!
@@brianhargiss9575 price is relative...it could easily be the last mower you ever need to buy and used it is still 5x the mower of anything new at the $400 price point! Enjoy and look after it! I just sold a Toro Proline 21" because I would rather keep my JD's...
Not all of it is made in America which is good. Because it has a Kawasaki engine (the best of small engines). few things you didn't mention the motor why it has a oil filter is because it is pressurized system.. Also the you could point out a cast aluminum mower deck instead of cheap stamped steel that rust. also 5 speed transmission. Truly the best mower made I owned this exact model and its is better than a Honda. I know because I had both. .I would still change oil and filter once a year with 10W30 synthetic. oil is cheap.
Hi I saw one of these for sale recently on market place but it was in rough shape, but I am curious on the lawn mower where is the electtric start on it as it says electriconic start on the deck? your lawn mower also has the very rare stripe bag not all of these came with that bag very hard to find I have been educating myself about this lawn mower it is my dream mower, also it will last forever, but I do have a another question what is it like on the hands after cutting grass, are the handles soft or very hard that your hands would get sore after a while?
@@Dave7160 There is no Vibration it runs ultra smooth that is why everyone loves the 14SB Kawasaki motor silver deck John Deere .Thanks for your interest in this video hope it helps you make the right choice as they are very very rare and hard to find .Good Luck !👍
Hi thank you so much for your kind hearted reply and insight to my questions, since my post the 2 lawn mowers have sold but I hope to find one at some point in time I like them, are the decks heavy?
