A John Deere loader front end is welded with muggyweld.com's 77 electrodes for cast iron. The bushing has been welded with other rods in the past. When grinding out previous welds, it's darn near impossible to remove all of the old rod as cast iron is soft and the deposit just mixes in with the cast. Sometimes you need to grind a little deeper than before to get the old electrode out. Phil Sherman of Portable Welding & Repair Services gave us a call to talk about 77 cast iron electrodes. 77 rod works on most cast irons and mild steel. Phil said he tacked the parts before welding with a MIG product he trusts before welding with 77. To be clear, 77 works great to tack the cast as well.
77 can be used in the same fashion as the nickel rods found in welding supplies. The 77 is fully machinable. Always drill a hole at the end of cracks, peen between passes, and weld short beads after preheating the cast iron. 77 works on most exhaust manifolds. If the rod beads up and rolls off, use our 72 electrodes for heat-affected casts as a root pass and finish or overlay with the machinable 77. After Phil completes the welding process he paints the part to make cracks more visible if they occur during use.
