Decided to do a little mowing with the John Deere 400. First part of the video is mowing and cleaning up some grass clippings from earlier this week. Last few minutes of the video is mowing a part of the yard that has not been mowed since the start of September.

What would be a good price to pay for a 400

We had a 400 with many attachments back around 1977. My Dad paid a lot of money for it at the time. We had a plow,front blade, disk and a belly mower. The fond memories of it are the reason I now own a 455. I like the high/low transfer case it had that I think they should have kept with the 4x series.

The John Deere 400 Rear wheels were different than the 200, 300 lawn tractors. Just like the 420s and 430s, the air valves on the rear wheels are inside the wheels, rather than outside. However, the rear wheels on the latter 420s, 430s as well as 425, 445, and 455, were similar to the 200 and 300 series tractors.

when you engage your pto does it need to be a slow casual engagement? my 400 has the Honda 670 repower an it makes a bad clunk on the deck when it comes on. jus wondering if I'm jus engaging the deck to fast

This machine has a Kohler short block that appears to be a k582 (23 hp engine). Spec on the replacement engine is 4852241.

Beautiful scenery towards the end of the video! And nice camera angles too. I despise the lack of storage space and battery life with the GoPro's. My original Hero+ has always had OK battery life and would record for hours on end, but my new Hero 7 runs out of battery and memory very quickly.

The 7 has been OK, video quality is great compared to my 3+ but I agree about the battery life. I have to really plan out the shots before I go to town. I am hoping to upgrade cameras over the winter and maybe go to a two camera set up.

How do you like it compared to the 318s?

It’s a good machine with a lot of good power. The biggest difference is it steering like a tank compared to a 318. I’m sure in 1975 it was a huge step forward and not nearly as hard as a 140, but if I am going to pick on something it’s going to be the steering.

Looks like you have to slow down in the thick stuff just like I do with the 400. My deck speed seems to slow down in the thick. I picked up an LX289 with a 54" and it handles the thick much better. Something is slipping on the 400 deck or PTO. Don't see anything though.

mmrbeef, I bought a john deere 425 over the summer. I have been very very particular about the maintenance on this thing seeing as it is my (first baby) I want it to be an heirloom for the family. But to go with this maintenance, could you please do a video or show me a diagram of where all the grease points are at? its a 1996 2wd 425. everything is original on it and there is nothing fancy to the machine. I just really want to make sure I take care of this thing. I would greatly appreciate it. thank you.

I got a question for ya , on my 317 i put a brand new belt from pto to the deck ,48” deck , have it adjusted so the little indicator says it is tight enough , and i engage the pto with engine about 3/4 rpms , and i still get that annoying belt squeal just for like 2 seconds , but none the less.. is there anyway to get that out ? I dont want to go to tight and put to much pressure on the deck bearings . They are well greased with $35 a tube commercial synthetic machinery grease. So is this common or is there a problem somewhere ? I got the belt from JD, any help or advise would be appreciated,, thanks

I would say it is not uncommon for them to squeal. Have you confirmed that it is the Mule drive belt instead of the deck belt itself? In the case of the 400 the squeal is coming from the PTO belt on the front of the engine. They are older belts and I have not replaced them, I would expect them to squeal due to the rubber being hard. If you have not replaced the deck belt and the tension spring is older, it could be the deck belt squealing. Being a 48” deck, which is newer, the tension mechanism is a bit different but still worth looking at. Ultimately a little squeal at deck start up isn’t too worrisome, if you know what is causing it.

How thick do you cut it last mowing of the season?
@mmrbeef
@mmrbeef 3 года назад
Honestly it really depends on the weather. I’ve tried to time the “last” cutting a few times and failed. So for the most part I just keep the deck set between 3.5-4”, which on all my machines is the true blade height because I use so many different machines and they all need to be the same height.
