This is Fall plowing with a 1968 John Deere 5020 diesel tractor. The 5020 was built in 1968 and has spent the last 35 yrs. on the Hulbert family farm near Waterford WI. It is pulling a John Deere #3200 5X18 spring-reset trailing plow made in 1980. The 5020 is a "standard" version not having a 3 point hitch. It came equipped with 24.5X32 rear tires and a Crenlo cab from the factory. Plenty of room to move around inside. Friends call it a "house". Very primitive and noisy; ear muffs are a must. The tractor and plow are perfectly matched to each other, operating at either 5 or 6 MPH.
Jerry Hulbert is the driver; Jason Hulbert; the videographer.

I watch your video almost all the time. The John Deere 5020 was always my favorite tractor. Thanks for showing.

Nice job of videoing and a super nice job of plowing. Neatly defined dead furrow, good rotation to the soil and level finish when done. Someone obviously knows how to set and operate a plow, which, from videos here on RU-vid, seems to be sorely lacking in many who post plowing videos. Well done!

5020's were one hell of a good tractor...

They were really dogs compared to others in that era. They weighed 18,000# and only put out 130 to 150 hp unless the farmer put a turbo kit on but then the engine could or would blow if you actually put the addition hp to use like pulling a 7 or 8 bottom plow and a certain shaft in the drive train could fail too. They were big and the wheatland areas had them but in my area their were more D21s or 220s Allis or 1456 IH and surprisingly 2255 Ollies. The 6030's at least more closely matched the hp to weight but they were still too heavy and were known as dogs back in their day. Our neighbor had a 6030 and he said it was a big slow fuel guzzling pig. But collectors are hot after them now............Out of the factory a D21 could work circles around a 5020.

As nice as it's working after so long---I would not be surprised to hear that it's always had Chevron Delo in the crankcase. !!

Grew up with a powershift side console(late model) 4020. That thing was completly gutless. the 4320 and 5020 were much, much better tractors for actual work. We had a Case 1030, wheatland with 38" rears and factory cab, and crazy weight added to it for the pulling work, that thing was unstoppable. Between the two, it worked out really well, tilled with the Case and planted with the JD for example. I enjoy seeing this vintage of tractor work, farms around here have outgrown the older gals like this so I don't get to see them running much anymore.

+davenhla I owned both a 4020 and a 4320, my 4020 was a 1969 synchro though however. It seemed at one time both of these tractors were about equal, until I found out the fuel pump on the 4320 was no good. The pump was replaced, and the pump was given a little more advance. The 4320 is ahead of a 4020, it seemed to me though, the difference was hardly that much more noticed. At 2200 rpm, they both seemed about equal, it was only when the 4320 was operated at 2500 rpm, it then came to life pretty good. I only ran at that rpm only at periodic times. Both tractors had the same size rear wheels, and I ran two 5/16 F145 moldboard plows behind both of them, and I can say honestly, one really did not not have advantage over the other. I did enjoy them both when I had them, they are great tractors.

@@jackanapes6676 That era Deere tractors were pretty gutless and fuel guzzlers. I've ran both a 4020 and an Allis 190XT (have a 200 now) and a 190 just has so much more power and is so fun to drive and to plow with and the operator layout couldn't be beat compared to the competition with the hydraulics, throttle, two speed powershift, 3-point controls and pto lever all at your finger tips in the right hand console. Just a dream to run compared to a 4020 or Oliver 1850 or 806..........Can you tell I like the 190? ;)...... the 806 gave a very comfortable ride though....

Yea, I drove a 200 before, much like the 190 I guess. I have one word for the John Deere over the Allis, power shift. That is all I need to say. I also drove an Oliver 1955 with the MFWD and that was a neat experience, it kinda made that Oliver, without the front drive, don't believe the tractor would have been any different from another. I have driven many different tractors over my time and each manufacturer had something unique, kind of like the differences between Ford, Chevy, Oldsmobile, Chrysler, it just goes as who wants to be brand loyal, they all will go to the same place, just different styles, tastes. Cheers, sir.

@@jackanapes6676 I'd still take a 190 or 200 over a 4020. Try a 200 on a plow or chisel and you will wonder where the power comes from. The 4020 doesn't give you that same feeling.The 190/200 are just a fun powerful tractor that can work a gear faster than a 4020. I have an old torque rise chart somewhere and the 190XT has twice the torque rise of a 4020 or 806. Now don't glue a 190 to the ground with weight or you will have trouble. I admit that. Keep them lighter and pull faster like today's tractors do. BTW when those old Power Shift Deere's were used in heavy work they had some issues that could be very expensive back then. Allis came with a 12 speed Power Shift in 1974. It is a much beefier unit than the concurrent Deere PS. I've had them side by side on a steel bench. There is a big difference and having worked in an Allis shop, the AC power shift is a long lived transmission as is the Power Director two speed. But hey, I am an Allis maniac so take it how you will.
@jackanapes6676
@jackanapes6676 3 года назад
@@SilverGleaner I see, however it took Allis over 10 years almost though to catch up with John Deere, with a PS trans, and I am a John Deere fan first, then Case second. And also a 190 might run with a 4020, however it is not even in the same league with a good running 4320, the 4320 has a longer wheelbase, more weight that the 190 can't make up for unless you add a WD 45 as a piggyback😅😂. Anyway I guess we all enjoy our memories and brand loyalties, again they all do the same jobs, just from different points of view. Good day to you sir.

Thanks for the comments. Usually the hardest work it does is pulling hay ride wagons. Only plows a few acres each year.

i love the tractor, but i think the cabs on those older tractor RUINS the iconic look of it.... i do like the way its throwing the dirt into the next field with the plow! raw power!

Wanted a cab tractor to mitigate the freezing WI fall plowing season. Friend of mine calls it a “house”. Big enough to stand up in and walk around. But, extremely warm in late spring. Always noisy; must wear hearing protection. Served its intended purpose very well.👍

THis tractor is capable pulling 7-8 bottoms which the case with the smaller but big 4520.
@jackanapes6676
@jackanapes6676 8 лет назад
+generationll I believe 8 furrows would be a stretch for this tractor in midwest soils. These 5020's were only rated at 133, and 141 hp. A 7 furrow is a chore sometimes for a 4850 with MFWD and 190hp. I have seen a 4850 struggle with a 7 furrow plow, so I believe a 6, or 5 furrow looks good for a tractor of this size in midwest soil conditions. These 5020's certainly had the weight, just the hp seems a bit low.

Jack Anapes Enter the turbo, intercooler, and P pump that transformed the 5020 into the 6030. The 5020 was a lugging tractor, not a runner. You are right about sizing the plow and letting the tractor run instead of lugging a 7 bottom plow. The fuel consumption will be less per acre and acres per hour worked should increase as well. Double bonus. Those cabs were a bit noisy and wearing the hearing protection is wise.

i never seen a 5020 as strong as the one in this video, i suspect the hp was turned up like it should be, i agree if it can pull a 5 that fast he could pull another bottom or 2, i remember seeing a 4020 pull a 4 bottom faster than a 5010 could
@SilverGleaner
@SilverGleaner 3 года назад
@@ccclc6159 Soil conditions vary a lot. I don't think that 5020 could pull that plow as fast in our clay hills. On youtube there is a 190XT pulling a 6 bottom at a pretty good pace but I bet the soil is way different than ours. We used to pull a 4x16 Oliver plow with our 190XT gasser and it did well but today we plow deeper and faster and our 7030 or 7050 fit good with our 5 bottom. I do have a 6 bottom I want to get ready and try out but I think the clay ground will require more weight added to the tractors. BTW a 5010 was a complete dog and the 5020 wasn't much better. Farmers put turbos on but then that created other problems.
