Here we attempt to figure out what is making the carburetor on the 1948 John Deere B overflow.

Appreciate the fact that even though you are working in the cold you still video what you’re working on

Ross you have shown me another first. I have rebuilt my share of carbs from minibikes to tractors but I have never seen anyone use a wood chisel as a carb tool. 😂 I also loved the Titanic reference. Not everyday one gets a carb rebuild with wood working tools and a history lesson all rolled up into one. Keep up the good work and it's good to see the frigid temperatures hasn't cooled your great sense of humor.

One of the challenges of working on old components...all sorts of crud can accumulate in nooks and crannys. At least you're in a cozy place where you're fingers aren't freezing to the carb. Seems like a complicated carb for a tractor of user-friendly design.

It IS a Deere. :) Have you cleaned the tank? Be carful in the house; you're in an enclosed space with an open flame (heater) ?

Good video. I have a '47 B with a DLTX67 carb. If the tractor sits for sometime it is really hard to start. Once it fires up she runs like a top and I can pull any hill here in central PA in 5th gear.

That’s just like this one once you get it running it’ll run forever. But sometimes it’s very contankerous to get started.

When your float sinks then you are in trouble. Those plastic floats are a great pain as they might still pass the floating-in gasoline test but still fail when in use. Usually, there is a spec sheet somewhere that tells what a float is supposed to weigh, including brass floats. I used a little postage scale to weigh floats. Brass floats can leak slowly and the gasoline forms a varnish inside the float so it passes the "Shake it test". It sure saved my bacon and also was a "Dang, you are good" moment when the customer's unit did not have momentary flood events where the exhaust turned black for a moment and the plow slowed down. Plows do not push much betterer when the float sinks. Have no fear, the weather is going to warm up and you will be inundated with outside stuff to video.

Sure are a lot of little things to take apart on that carb. I never dreamed it would be that complex.

I think they could probably have made it simpler if they tried harder 🤣

I learned something that I’ve never heard of before last night while watching Moline Dan’s video where he used toilet bowl cleaner for soaking his carburetor and it worked awesome. I would love to know the exact cleaner and the process
@DanielMeyer-ls5ph

Yes, use the drill bits, but not in a drill. Do it by hand. Rust will not always clean out of the small passageways with cleaner only.

If you're having trouble with fuel coming up through the emulsion tube be sure and clean the bowl vent which is located under the small brass circle next to the emulsion tube stem on the upper part of the throttle or the carburetor body if you need parts Robert's carburetor repair in Iowa is an excellent source they also carry the aircraft

I'm sure you are correct on the float, I could hear it making noise when you started shaking it. Pretty obvious when it sank,lol. I was amazed at how much junk was in there. Maybe this time you will have it on fixed and it will last awhile. See you later.

@oldcars5547720 5 месяцев назад
I think you diagnosed the problem! I asked this once before but I don't know if you answered the question or not. Way back in the 1930s, practically all in-line automotive engines had up-draft carburetors -- even the early Miller and Offenhauser racing engines.In some instances they even had multiple up-draft carburetors. However, in the post-World War II era, practically the entire industry shifted to down draft or side draft carburetors. However, you have showed us that Oliver, John Deere other tractor brands such as Farmall and Allis Chalmers, stayed with up draft carburetors. Do you know why this is? As I have remarked before, these carburetors are similar to those used on small aircraft engines.

Back in my brief tenure at Titan tire, they had piles of really long number bits that would work great for cleaning out small passages. Personally, I'll just stick with a Marvel/Schebler! Or better yet, a Roosa Master of Ambak, (SP).
@rosstheoliverman
@rosstheoliverman 5 месяцев назад
I ordered some aircraft bits that should be the right size and they’re also 6 inches long so they should fit down in those passages. Hopefully I don’t screw it up too bad 🤣

I already know all the comments that your gonna get on this. And for all the drill bit guys. No you don't gotta drill out the passageway with a bit.
@rosstheoliverman
@rosstheoliverman 5 месяцев назад
I never have drilled them before and it ran just fine. But I did buy a set of the bits and I’m gonna try it anyway to see if it makes any difference.
@kennycriswell141
@kennycriswell141 5 месяцев назад
@rosstheoliverman as you say it's yours to do with as you wish. That's what I like about your videos and you. I refuse to use drill bits on these carburetors. I bought a ultrasonic cleaner. I hot soak them in it and I mean I crank them up hot and just keep them going sometimes 2 or 3 days. Pull them out and run brakleen through all passages and then blow with air compressor. Done hundreds of these carburetors never drilled a one. I know it's cold but I'm anxiously waiting for a 55EB combine drive 🤣🤣

As far as drilling out passages to get it cleaned out, I have done that before with help from a cousin that was a Deere mechanic, with a G carb that was bolted to a A puller. So what sizes would be required for a B I don't know, I'm not sure I remember what we used.

The rust in the bowl and other parts is not from the gas more like WATER. Does anyone clean the gas tank or run the carb out of gas when stopping the rarely used tractor, ya think.
@roycummings9760
@roycummings9760 5 месяцев назад
I always shut the fuel off and run the carb out of gas. I seem to have a whole lot less problems with carbs that way.
@rosstheoliverman
@rosstheoliverman 5 месяцев назад
I’ve always been shutting the gas off and letting this one run out of gas for this very reason, but I think that the rust is from when the tractor sat for several years not running.

I use Lucas fuel ⛽️ additive in the gas and Diesel vehicle/tractors bth, and especially in the winter when they put more evaporated qualities in the fuel ,,it keeps we have operative part less when you put the additive in and adds an element of lubricant to the fuel, might stop your rusty equation in these carburetor lol th BigAl California.praise Jesus Christ grace amen 🙏
