I completed the cosmetic overhaul on our 1977 John Deere 4230 tractor. The tractor is original to the farm, purchased new from Sichi Farm Supply. It currently has just over 3,200 original hours. No major engine or mechanical work done. Just needed a re-paint, and some cosmetic repairs. Since these pictures were taken, I have also completely rebuilt the dashboard and gauge clusters, installed a new steering wheel, and rebuilt the steering valves. This is by no means a "museum quality" restoration, more of a "working" restoration. I use the tractor throughout the summer season, primarily for hauling round bales and raking hay with our Kuhn 7822 dual-rotor rake.
I would like to thank Joe Sustrik (owner) for allowing me the chance to complete the restoration, my grandfather Jim, and my friends Matt and Jeff for helping me complete this project. Enjoy!

Pamela, To be honest I don't recall what I spent. As I remember, it was a fairly costly project but I felt it was worth it to help preserve the tractor. Everything I used on the machine was purchased directly through my John Deere dealer. Parts are readily available, and of high quality. Everything fit perfectly. I don't mind paying more for quality parts and I felt it was good to rely on my local dealer and support them. These Generation II tractors are fantastic machines. Extremely durable and well made. The perfect blend of old school and modern tech. In terms of what I use the tractor for; its spends most of its time in our haying operation. Its primary role in the summer months is to pull our Kuhn GA7822 dual-rotor hay rake. The tractor does this job very well. The combination of two wheel drive and open station make it a dream to use for operating the rake. In addition, it pulls our Kuhn GF5202THA tedder. Other than that, it pulls hay wagons, and pull-type field sprayers from time to time. After putting so much work and time into the machine, I wanted to have it do lighter duty work to keep it from getting "roughed up" too much. I try to take phenomenal care of my equipment (regular maintenance as well as washing) but you know how that goes. Accidents happen! On the other hand, I didn't want the tractor to do too much sitting. That can be just as bad for these old horses. Things get dry, stiff, start to weep or leak, etc etc. Thank you for your kind comments! I very much appreciate you taking the time to respond. I tried to do a cost effective overhaul on this machine to make it more presentable. I`m something of a neat freak when it comes to my equipment. I learned good habits from my grandfather and father. I consider my equipment as not only a means of generating profit, but also an investment. I believe that their appearance is a direct reflection of our hard work and care and I do my best to keep them looking new and clean. This "restoration", as I call it, wasn't a museum quality job but I feel it serves its purpose. Thanks again and best wishes to you!

Awesome paint job! I don't like to see overspray on tires, plus it's hard to clean the paint off afterwards. The 30 series were always sharp looking tractors.

The paint is all John Deere Green, Yellow, and Black from my local John Deere dealer. I used all rattle cans. It`s not a bad paint job for using a rattle can, and the paint quality is really good!
@mgraham112
@mgraham112 9 лет назад
mbarber84 - are you kidding me!! That is one amazing rattle can paint job. Wow! Any tips you could give me would be great as this is my first restoration. My biggest fear is getting the new paint to stick as I'm not going to completely disassemble or sandblast. What surface prep did you do prior to paint? I'll probably just take off the sheet metal and tires. How has the paint held up in the past few years? Would you do anything different if you could go back. ...
@mbarber84
@mbarber84 9 лет назад
Thanks! The key to a good finish is the prep work. I sanded all the sheet metal down to even out the surface and remove any loose or bad paint. Blow them off with air and wipe off any loose dust. Then degrease them with a paint prep solvent of your choice. Once they`re clean and free of oils, don't touch them with bare hands anymore! I would suggest painting them immediately once they are clean and dry. Try to paint them in a dust free area with plenty of ventilation. It should be relatively warm, but not in direct sunlight. When painting, move the can in even, smooth passes. Paint in light coats and allow a little time between each coat to avoid runs. It takes a little getting used to but it CAN be done. The finish is certainly not as good as an auto-body paint job but it is very nice for a tractor. The Deere OEM paint is very good paint. It sticks well, wears like iron, and holds up to the daily work. I use the tractor every year for raking hay and light tillage work. Its not as "perfect" as the day I finished the overhaul but it still looks fantastic. Take time to do the prep work right. That includes taping off around things you don't want paint on. Remove panels that can be removed and paint them individually, then reassemble at the end. When painting your wheels, tape off the tires or cover them to avoid over spray. I had old tires on the front wheels when I paint, then replaced them with new tires after the overhaul was done. The rear tires are the same ones that were on there when I painted. They were only a year old so I didn't replace them. I just took time to cover them up to protect them from over spray. I also bought a small can of Deere yellow in brush-on form. I used this to brush paint the wheels around the bead of the tire and close to the edge of the rim, that way I didn't have to worry about spraying close to the tires. I got all of my parts through Deere. Everything fit exceptionally well and the quality is fantastic. Take your time and plan everything out. Work slow and steady, and don't let yourself get overwhelmed as it is a massive undertaking to do correctly. I worked EVERY day for 3 months straight in order to do this overhaul. The most nervous part is at the end when re-assembly happens. If I could give you one bit of advice, I would suggest if you are going to put brand new decals on your tractor, if you`ve never done it before, try to find a friend or someone who has experience help you. The decals are VERY touchy. Be sure to completely remove the old ones and sand down the area until is it perfectly flat. The yellow band that goes around the hood is by far the hardest one to do. Get some professional help and you will be in good shape. It`s a big job, but the reward at the end is really worth it. I`m extremely glad I took the time to do it, and do it right. I love this old tractor and it puts a smile on my face every time I use it. I`ve had many comments on how good the tractor looks, and it gives me great pleasure to know that it is pleasing to others as well. I wish you the best of luck!

nice restoration. I am also restoring my 4230. having hard time with dash panel and instrument cluster. where did you come across them parts at.
@mbarber84
@mbarber84 10 лет назад
All parts for the tractor were purchased directly through my local Deere dealer. As of then, the parts were all still available. I purchased a completely new dash panel, new gauges, new steering wheel, knobs, switches, etc. It isn't cheap, but the parts are extremely nice and they fit perfectly. The instrument cluster gauges are all tied in to one big pre-fab circuit board, everything just bolts to the board. The tachometer is the only gauge on the dash I didn't replace because it still worked flawlessly and it shows the original hours on the tractor.

Sorry buddy, this probably is not a comment you are expecting BUT, according to me, tractor before restoration was much better. Especially having in mind that the condition of the tractor was far away of "need a restoration". If I were you maybe I would allow to resurfacing the seat material. Not change the seat only repairing the seat fabric. However I hope you enjoy your work but the original is one...everything after that is artificial.

Not sure why you even watched a video about an OVERHAUL???? You should be looking for videos about "survivors" or "unrestored" tractors. If it weren't for some of the excellent restoration work that has gone on in this country, many of the thousands of tractors that are currently alive and well, would not even exist.

@kadenwatt2033
@kadenwatt2033 5 лет назад
@@mbarber84 the best (and most economical) way in my opinion is to find some old vinyl flooring (the one piece roll kind), make a cardboard template of your floor, and just cut a mat out of that. We had some dark gray vinyl lying around that we ended up using. Waaay easier to clean mud by taking the mat out and spraying it off than trying to clean it out of the cab.

very nice job!!! i repainted my dad's 4240 this fall...turned out quite nicely too. his has 130 hp, 4 post, 10,000hrs from mowing hay on it. runs like a champ too, all we ever did was have the radiator redone once and the injectors changed. what's your 4230 used for? also my neighbor has one just like our 4240, but it's been sitting in his yard since 1996 when he gave up on farming and left everything sitting where it was.
