Most so called farmers don’t drive there own tractor anyway look around they never wanted to pay labor anyway so they will just have to do it all I Guess I am not sure what the plan is for regular people down the road
@@James-bs8bdor you could have cross-skilled mechanics.. Y’know, like the ones we have right now that work on the modern automobiles that are extremely tech sensitive?
After "Right to Repair" protest and farmers repairing the tractors themselves bypassing the software & without any intervention of OEM. John Deere smartly done this autonomous tractor to keep a track on farmers activities.
How does the tractor stop and pick up a big rock that got lodged in the machine it's pulling? Can it see that the bolts came loose and the harrow on the back left the machine 43 acres ago?
It will be kind of like those center pivot irrigation systems that are supposed to run by themselves. I knew a guy who had a bunch of those things and he spent the night in his truck all summer long driving between farms checking on those things to make sure nothing had messed up or sprung a leak.
@@scottrayhons2537 I have a 5210, 2000 model and it doesn't have any sensors on it. One reason dad and I quit farming was all this high tech stuff we couldn't work on. The last new Deere combine we bought in the mid 2000s was a wonderful machine when everything on it was working right but it had electronic gremlins. We had to put a battery tender on that thing and keep it plugged in because something on it would KILL the batteries if you left it parked for more than a couple of days. we never could figure out what the problem was nor could JD. Fortunately we didn't farm very far from home so we could drive the combine back to the house and park it in the shed every night and plug it in. The digital corner post display in the cab had to be sent off to be fixed more than once. Half the time the auto header height control wouldn't work right. Same deal with the feeder house reverser. It was a low hour machine that had never sat out and we got top dollar for it when we sold out. I heard that the guy who bought that combine at dad's retirement sale kept it for only one season. He probably got tired of dead batteries and having to jump start it.
Draft sensors. If the implement is pulling harder/easier, it could indicate a problem. This would be most beneficial where farmers run multiple machines in the same field. One operator to oversee 2 or more machines.
I have never understood this policy of John Deere. I can understand JD not wanting farmers to attempt to change computer programs on farm machinery but to stop people attempting physical repairs doesn't make sense. Here in Australia, especially in the sparsely populated wheat growing areas, the nearest dealer can be a couple of hundred kilometres away. Wheat growers will often need to harvest at night if incoming bad weather threatens their crops, so if a harvester breaks a parts the operator will attempt to fix it. Harvesting contractors usuallly carry spare parts and farmers usually have a workshop, but they are told they will "void the warranty" if they attempt to repair it themselves!
While I agree wholeheartedly (IIRC) those stupid farmers made John Deere too big with their misplaced loyalty and it bit them in the rear. Megacorps don’t care about you at all, pretending they do is a sales tactic itself. Competition is what keeps them honest.
@@protocetid it's the farmer's fault. Case ih has put out better and cheaper more powerfull stuff but ppl complain about waiting on parts and services. If they step the game up they could destroy Deere. Deere has 3 good things, parts/service, better GPS, best looking . Alot of ppl like the look and it's more of a reason then ppl think. New Deere like a sports car in looks department. The old ones ran amazing but last 15 years junk.
@@protocetid no farmers did not make John Deere to big , farmers are just trying to keep up with the ever growing demand for food. Hey if you dont like it just stop eating .
@@DEDBRD-di4yj I-i-is this a joke? Why should we suffer for farmers' bad decisions? Specially in the US where they're hardline conservatives who are supposed to be all about personal responsibility and free markets. Why don't they practice what they preach and buy from a supplier that isn't trampling all over their consumer rights? Oh wait these are the same morons who mindlessly spout right wing rhetoric yet will gladly take subsides (what happened to "socialism bad?") and hire illegal immigrants.
If this autonomous system costs more than employing a guy to run the tractor This is not that practical With John deere infamous anti right to repair stants I am not sure how this would end up
A guy can`t run the tractor 24 hours a day. And who wants to do such a job today? Such a system has so much advantages and is necessary to feed the worlds increesing population.
Guys will pay $500k for a tractor with no operator rather than pay a full time guy to service and operate a $80k one. The depreciation on that new tractor will cover a good man's salary. People who botched about not finding help want to pay $10/hr seasonally.
But the tractor will never walk off the job. It never calls in sick doesn’t ask for healthcare and the liability is a lot lower. Also if you get in a pinch you can sell it.
lets say you pay him a good wage of 40 dollars an hour. he works every day 8 hours. in a year it costs 100k. in 5 years the automated pays back. let alone 50 years. and this thing can work in the middle of a night if you want it. this thing can work Christmas if you want it. this thing does not have other natural needs. its a no-brainer..
Seems interesting, but why do I imagine a lot of pissed off farmers? Aside from the obvious right to repair problems, if the autonomy isn’t working you clearly have to go to a JD dealer and have them fix it.
And thats great, humans should have a greater purpose than spending their life working repetitive jobs. Once everyones basic needs of survival are covered, humans will have time to discover themselves and be creative. Humans invented thinking machine and all the controllers, electronics and mechanical parts needed so that's just natural next step for evolution after industrial revolution. You will still be able to work if that's what you love, and some people might pay premium for man grown crops, some people still hunt with bows and arrows and fish, it's just not an efficient way anymore.
Replacing implies that there are workers to begin with, which is incorrect. No one wants to work as a farm hand anymore so many possible job positions go unfilled. Automation is solving a shortage in this case not displacing workers.
This guy is talking about farmers needing more time, but it's not time outside the tractor seat they need, they need time for the tractor to run, any down time in the field when conditions are right is the problem not freeing up time to do paper work. So wasting time setting up the automation, correcting mistakes, travelling to and from the machine to solve issues when they happen instead of instantly as they happen, that's all wasted time in the most important time slot. I think John deere have probably spent 100million on a white elephant, it won't work.
What if you run one automated one side of the field and you drive the other one on the other side of the field? What about you have a field finisher run in front of you as you plant.
What would be wrong with that? Pay for the month you need it don’t pay when you don’t need it. Rather than paying for all year when most farms only will need it a couple months out of the year.
Why does Netflix charge a monthly charge to use their service? Like the satellites in the sky and the development and liability of the service are free. Theres not even any subscription fees to deere green star if you just the basic if you want more it costs more.
I think if it can run 24/7 within reason then I think that could really help. but like many of these types of jobs they dont pay very much so the tech would need to be so affordable to compensate.
@@dannydigittydog5116 I do agree that driving a tractor is more fun than pushing a button, but you do know that farmers are in debt spiral right? Sure their gross salary may be enormous but have you ever looked into their expenses?
@@dannydigittydog5116I reckon ay, I’m a farmers son and like every job if you are good at it you will make lots of money, but farming is also a fast track to debt if done wrong
Absolutely no way I would trust this out in the field!! People are getting way to lazy and trusting of technology!! Some things just need a person involved period!
Its going to be crazy when automation like this hits more fields. no pun intended. =) I live in a farm town and automation has been whats been replacing hands on the farm. In the 1900's 94% of people lived on farms, with automation in things like the tractor and combine made it so you needed less and less hands to get the job done. And in modern decades man people have been just priced out of farming anymore. What would cost a normal person for a family home will get you this tractor or a combine, not counting all the implements you need and the million or two to just buy the farm.
One more way for JD to stop farmers from performing ANY self maintenance on their equipment and plunge deeper in their pockets. That is NOT good for small/mid farms, its a take over of farmer"s freedom
Well if you have a small farm you don’t really need a high horsepower tractor that is this new as well. By used old equipment they do the job. This is good for the farmers that want it. There not saying you have to have it it’s just a choice
Nobody if forcing farmers to buy this equipment, if your interested in doing ALL of your own work just stick to older equipment. It is absolutely not a takeover of farmers freedom.
I assume the tractor can still be driven as a conventional tractor. If there was an internet failure I assume the tractor would shut down. In parts of rural Australia there are internet "black spots" where mobile phone (Cellnet) connection is poor due to distance and geography. Electricity failures, due to storms or fires, can also shut down a whole district's internet connection temporarily.
@@stereomachine All of the problems that happen will be ironed out unless the company making these are scum who operate on borderline scam model of service/subscription when their junk fails.
@@scottrayhons2537I'm sure it's GPS controlled, in conjunction with deep learning and inferencing with the onboard computer, so it will probably complete the task assigned and then pause and await additional instruction, or even return to home if there are no additional instructions received over the course of a set time of pausing?
I help farm for a lot of years. Back in the old school years...where a farmer raised livestock, till ground, raised crops and made a good living and raised a family. One of the things I miss was working ground. Readying the field to be planted. Self driving machinery, trucks and cars...no. Fantastic engineering and technology. But if I can't operate my own machinery then maybe I need to look at how I farm and operate.
I don't see this replacing people operating their own equipment but this would be helpful as an extra operator, so you could have multiple machines running with less hands on deck. Someone out sick but it is the perfect weather to till, no problem. Bet they are a nightmare to fix though.
I grown-up in the countryside and my family had different tractors brands (John Deere included) My question is how managing the dust, soil create a lot of dust, how the cameras going to work in the middle of the cloud of dust or mud when is rainy ? Thanks
wish i had that tech on a lawnmower here at home... I'd even suggest that they add a drone-like package that allows you to remotely fully control the vehicle
The only thing I ever liked about farming was driving the tractor, not sure why anyone would want one of these. I also wonder what is going to happen when this thing gets to a wet spot in the field? I am guessing it is going to drive right through it and get stuck up to the axles. Also what is going to happen when that chisel plow snags an old tree root where a fence row used to be 50-100 years ago and starts bulldozing a mound of dirt up under the harrow, or a bunch of corn stalks clog it up.
This is great and all but John Deere's policy on repair needs work. You guys are clowns in the industry when it comes to farmers buying your products and you want to nickel and dime them for wanting to fix their own bought equipment.
I wonder if the company warranties a new unit and damage caused when the tech eventually messes up and sends it into a river, highway, or even someone’s house.
So IRL farming simulator H key press. But will it glitch out like the game where it fails to do a u turn at the end of the field and go into its own lala land?
Indeed... But most of these farmers brought this upon themselves, So let the farmers childrens families pull themselves by their bootstrap and go back to school. Because they should not expect a free hand out from our taxes money. Because that is what most of these farmers YELLED! When We The People were asking for HELP from our Racist EViL Nation, Demanding for the USA to join every industrialized Nation in helping their citizen by providing “BASiC HUMAN GOODS” such as: - Health Care For-All - Mental Health Care For-All - Drug Rehabilitation For-All - Education/Trade For-All - Federal Jobs/Trade Guarantee For-All - Housing For-All to its citizen So ZERO! Tears, until they start fighting for the rest of We The People needs... - Health Care For-All - Mental Health Care For-All - Drug Rehabilitation For-All - Education/Trade For-All - Federal Jobs/Trade Guarantee For-All - Housing For-All to its citizen
John deere comes out with something cool and all of a sudden everyone becomes an activist for right to repair. truth is most people will screw more stuff up trying to fix it themselves than just having someone who know what their doing fix it. Also all the tech info and books you could ever want is available for any john deere tractor, also service advisor is available for customers to connect to diagnostics of their tractor so Iam pretty sure everyone thats complaining about it has never even looked into trying to fix their own tractor if they even own one which ninety percent of commenters on here probably don’t. If your internet or phone service goes down are you going to complain about not being able to fix it yourself or just call the provider because you don’t really know how to fix it. Same with anything els.
First thing I would look at is return on investment. No matter what, I can not see how this is better than putting someone in the tractor for 20 bucks an hour. I saw in the video how this makes a farmers job easier. That should not be a reason to go into debt for this tech.
John Deere wants to "rent" you the package so they can take a % of your business. They'll make it extremely difficult to service and for sure won't allow you to service the new components yourself. Who owns the machine you pay for? John Deere thinks they do and if you allow them to continue to think that way they will.
I work for a school district and we constantly have to fight to get students off their phone. More and more often I’m finding they can have full careers using their phones. Hmmm?
They should automate less destructive forms of soil aeration. Run-off from tillage ruins streams and rivers. All of the organic matter on top runs down stream causing dry, clay like soil to be on top, causing more of a need for aeration/ tillage.
There’s a massive dead-zone in the Gulf because of agricultural runoff coming down the Mississippi River from the corn belt. Cover crops are in now sis, tillage is out. Less work 💅💅
Man pls! I bet you farmers are pissed! They love farming plus they will see yhis as a minus not a plus, so that lie she told real farmers ain't going for that. This is most definitely taking jobs, jus cause u say it doesn't, does not make it true.
For a long time farmers have beeen quite healthy in the eye department, as well as in the muscle department. Autonomous Tractors gaining major place could mean this status for farmers drops. They become like IT employees - balloon eyed, and lethargic.
I don't understand what you mean. None of that made sense. Nothing about this creates more farmland, and even if it did that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
The business model John dear follows seems vary greedy, so In reality it's only gonna cost 5 to 10 grand to add these features, but we're gonna charge you 80,000! There really should be a percentage cap on how much profit can be made relative to cost and labor
There ought to be Apartment complexes or a skyscraper next door to those huge farms with people living there that could do the work and not have to drive forever to get there.
Everyone saying right to repair probably doesn’t even farm. Hope you are a good programmer or know how to jail break their system which would cause a lot of problems with JD Link.
This farmer is fake. He's not thinking about one day but that sounds what's gonna happen on our young kids. Don't know how to farm. This is so wrong very wrong very wrong.
