It was nice to see how clean you had the equipment and work area. When see guys working in the grass where you can lose everything or a workbench where there was dirt, grass and parts from other equipment to get mixed in. I have a 2014 Cub Cadet with a Kawasaki on it. 870 hours. I dropped the PTO when I heard a little squeak. Popped the seals out on both bearings and repacked them. Now every 200 hours the PTO comes off. I have the original bearings in it. The k46 transmission has never been dropped and opened up. I drilled 2 drain holes and change the fluid every 100 hours. Thanks for tackling the PTO project, most would not attempt. Allen in Mobile

Great job! I have the x320. John Deere likes to make you buy all new assemblies for their equipment. Instead of picking up a 5 dollar bearing, they want you to buy the $80 dollar part you don’t need with it. It sure helps knowing basic auto mechanics. Thanks for the info, I have a feeling I’ll be doing the same to mine.

air chisel/hammer for that type thing! Thanks for this video I don't have money for a new clutch and couldn't figure out how to take it apart so now I may stand a chance of fixing it

I have a X300 also that I bought in 2009. I have I believe between 3/4 to 1 acre. Still working well. I did notice that JD doesn’t do an accurate deck level job in the factory or before delivery per the X300 gauge in the center of the deck height adjustment knob. Also when it was time for me to adjust the valve lash last year, they were way way loose. I could say the valve lash drag was double. With it that loose, I don’t know how it was able to start.😮 Thx for the video.

Thanks for your video Froggy I'm in the exact same situation with a John Deere sst16, except that my electrical clutch makes a lot more noise than yours did :) Now I have the courage to get it separated and given new tenants.

Good luck! For faster resolution, you may try taking the clutch apart and cleaning all of the corrosion and debris out of it. Another commenter (on this vid or another) mentioned that noise may be coming from the two halves of the mechanism touching. Might be worth investigating on yours.

Had the same issue today- been quiet but then all of a sudden making the noise. I engage the clutch without the mower deck on and instant quiet so I knew it was the bearing in the clutch. I pulled the clutch off and popped the seal off the bearing and injected grease with a needle attachment, reinstalled and still making the noise. Just watched your video and then ordered the bearing. Thanks Foggy Tinkering for posting. I don't have a press but I'm hoping that I can drive out the bearing and back in.

Did you find it wasnt a bearing? Clean up the clutch plates. Something stuck in there or just rust and dirt will cause the ringing sound.

NOTE: The top bearing is a NSK 6205-16 (25.4mm ID x 52mm OD x 15mm width)

PB blaster is your friend, also use the old bearing race to press in new bearing, it is a perfect fit.

Not Available:Using the old bearing to press in the new one is a good idea, but you must grind a bit off the old outer race or you will end up with 2 bearings in the housing ,and you will not get the old one out, just a light grind will be enough for it to not get "stuck" in there. Chris B.

Very good video, I have the older LX188 and on its clutch the bearing is held in place by peening over the lip of the pulley over it. So I bought the new clutch from JD for $230. I can honestly say though I have 1400 hrs on this mower and it is a 1994, so I felt the expense was worth it. The clutch could go out tomorrow if I would of just replaced the bearing.

Just done mine last week , I cut slits in the lip and bent it back , replaced the bearing and knocked the lip back over , bearing was £8 new clutch over £200 in the UK,

Good video. Where did you buy the engine shaft bearing 6205 ?

Good job. One question: you said (but I did not see) that the piece of the clutch you put the new bearing into had a clip on the 'inside' that you removed. What type of clip was that please and would it be necessary to remove that one before punching out the bearing? Update: just got my bearing out today after much effort. I don't have a hydraulic press. I tried a socket and rubber mallet, mounting the clutch piece in a vise with socket, and finally the thing that worked was using a flat bit with an air hammer around the inside circumference. Getting the new one back on should be interesting. May have to borrow a 'seating tool' from my local big box auto parts store.

You might try just cleaning it out. A few commenters have said that corrosion causes the noise.

Use an old front mower rim or a piece of tubing to set under your pulley to minimize chance of bending it.

Hey Foggy, got a question for you? I have a JD x300 with 300 hours on it. Every time I engage my mower deck, there is a violent thrust on initial engagement. It smooths out and the blades spin good afterwards until I have to reengage the deck. What do you think is causing that? I think i need to replace the PTO clutch?
@FoggyTinkering
@FoggyTinkering 6 месяцев назад
Clutch could be worn, and/or the clearance is not set right. I hope you got it figured out.

Saw some rather large pieces of rust fall out when you removed the friction plate. 5:32 Also looks like the head of the bolt is wobbling at the end. 17:58

There was nothing wrong with your bearings. It is the two parts of the clutch touching one another. The sound will come back later when the two parts slightly touch again. Don't replace bearings that are good. You even said so in your own video.
@FoggyTinkering
@FoggyTinkering 3 года назад
Thanks for the input! I studied my video after reading your comment, and the sound does appear to me ringing through the outer housing of the clutch, so I believe there is merit to what you say. I couldn't see any witness marks in the on the parts, but they may not be visible in the video. I cleaned a bit of corrosion from the parts before reassembly, so that may have contributed to eliminating the sound. I'm curious to see if it does return, and finding the how/why the two components touch.
@rocknral
@rocknral 3 года назад
Correct Chris. Sometimes debris gets in between the plates. Just pulling them appart and giving the plates a clean up will get rid of the ringing, scraping sound. If it's a bearing its normally a lower pitched growling sound.

Thank you, and good question. I realized later on that the seat switch was bypassed by the previous owner. I have since corrected that. Everything now operates as it should.

@@robertgriffin6668 I have a Cub Cadet SLXT 1050 doing the same, PTO looks similar. My bearing may even be louder. New belt might last 20 minutes till it begins to start fraying!

How about welding the clutch. Would the blades turn and mow? Just saying. Since I only pay a dollar for my machine I’m going to give it a try😂😂😂😂

Mines the same way, not as loud when it’s engaged!
@rocknral
@rocknral 3 года назад
Thats because the clutch locks up and the plates aren't rubbing against each other. And the bearing on the pulley side isnt spinning when its engaged. I reckon the noise in this video is some debris between the clutch plates.

Nothing wrong here. should have left it alone. Unless is broken don't fi it. True with anything on a lawn tractor. Those PTO's all make noise. Mine Squeals when shutting off. Been doing it for 8 years.
