Try the bagger for leaves. It can get kind of messy but you can get 30+ bags in just an hour or so. Got rid of the tow cart for a Gorilla wagon this year and it's much better.

@@DONALD1951 The 42" deck kept breaking belts, and it was my fault because I never knew to grease the spindles! I'm surprised how the spindles lasted that long. I have 2 acres to mow and it did great for 8 years, but after that, the deck started leaving a line of grass in the middle of the cut. So, first I tried to rebuild the deck by adding new spindles and pulleys. Once I took of the spindles, I had a big surprise. There were cracks about 1"-2" long coming from the inside of the mounting hole, spreading to the rest of the deck shell. That was the point when I realized that I had to invest 1000 bucks into a new 48" deck. I am so glad I did. That deck cuts so smooth, evenly and never bogs down the tractor. The steel is much thicker than the 42", and is much better built. You get double belts, easy removal, and 4 anti-scalp wheels. I wish i bought that in the first place 😭. Overall the dealer said that the Kawasaki engine outlasts the deck😊. John Deere has redesigned the 42-inch deck in 2016, to the ACCEL DEEP so it should be ok now. I have a 2009 EDGE model so that was a problem for many people. Thanks!

Actually there was a dedicated mulch deck for the X300. There is also the kit you can add to the standard deck. Which I have. The mulch deck has a left and a right blade.

You can easily jumper/override those stupid safety switches and save ton's of time.

It is like everything else, what they made years back was made better than today.

The gator is better built than their lawn tractors, that is for sure.

I believe it's all about the transmissions Also a lawn & garden two Different machines For sure X380 is even a bigger jump it's a huge Step if you have hills uneven grass you get what you pay for. Also thickness of deck All plays a part as well. You really do get something extra for $$$

+Love2boat92 I looked at the new x300 series today and the decks definitely have greasable spindles at least on the 42" decks. I know because I reached under the tractor to check and pulled back a greasy finger!! : )

+plugnickle Ha-ha. I've done that before. I'm glad they are greaseable. I would never make them so they can't be greased.

@@Lanninglongarmmowing The grease fittings are a joke. You are putting grease into a hollow cavity between the 2 SEALED bearings. Useless.

@@gordbaker896 SEALED bearings wear out especially in deck spindles. Take out the inner seal of both, drill and tap a hole for a grease zert. The problem of the spindle bearings wearing out is then solved.

@@Lanninglongarmmowing WRONG. They are sealed for a reason, to keep dirt out. Greasing a fake zerk fitting only fills the cavity between upper and lower bearings. You are NOT greasing the bearings. They wear out and you replace either both bearings or the Spindle assembly. If you remove the inner seals, greasing will pop out the upper seals and allow ingress of dirt and moisture.

You have to get a cover for the seat, the seats will crack very quickly.

Use a blower to remove the grass clippings that acumalates on the front of the deck.

They were made better back then. You will not get the same years of service out of ANY brand made today.

I agree it is definitely a nice machine, but I do like my 1981 john deere 18hp 317 with a 50 inch deck, rear tiller and my snow plow with 2 way hydraulics

They are better that the ones from the box stores. But they still are not very good quality.

I had heard that ALL were JD built in TN.? I agree with you although my LA 145 has been relatively trouble free at 450 hrs.

Well we have a John Deere x500 for 8 years and it has not had a single problem, except for a broken battery cable. Every day, I can easily glide across the lawn at 12 km/h, with a 48 inch deck, while still maintaining next to perfectly cut lawn. John deere's are usually perfectly fine and reliable tractor, but if you do not do simple tasks like changing the fuel filter, they will complain. Also, check out John deere's zero turn mowers. They're pretty slick!

You are right. They are junky today and overpriced for what you get.

My 2017 JDx350 was delivered to me with an uneven deck, off by 1/2 inch. If it were not for the owners manual I would have returned it and bought a Husqvarna. I do like the frame of the Xline, very strong and you can feel the difference, but for goodness sake, can John Deere put 4 anti scalp wheels on their Xseries 42 inch decks. I could care less about an electronic display board, give me something that will help me prevent scalping on my lawn, an electronic display does nothing for the owner of a JD. These are not cars, they are mowers.

The frame on my Craftsman YT4000 flexes terribly on the slightest off-camber situations. Not built anything like the old machines when Roper was building them. I've got 284 hours on my YT4000, and its a POS, never again will I waste money on a Craftsman product. I only went with Craftsman again because of the old GT18's reliability over the 22 years I had it. Nope new ones are purely a waste. Not really sure what to get when this mower fails. Kind of want more of a garden tractor variety with the larger wheels, and for sure this time I want a 3 blade deck, the 2 blade decks don't seem to cut as well at least my YT4000 42" deck sure doesn't. It leaves uncut areas in places my old GT18's 44" 3 blade deck went through like nothing. Not impressed at all with the YT4000's cut quality and build quality. Won't get into the B&S 24HP engine, pretty sure its really only about 10HP it has far less power than my old GT18 had, and its always been a pain to get started after it has set for more than a couple days.

Look at the D140 at Lowes 48 inch deck, it's a very good machine that gets great reviewes, has a lot of good features, and you can save $1000 by not getting an X series John Deere.

Looked at that one, and the D170 as well. Kind of leaning towards the D170 for the larger wheels, makes for a bit better capability on rougher terrain than smaller tires. Looks more like what my old GT18's build quality was. The Craftsman YT4000 is terrible, feels like its going to fall apart doing less work than my old GT18 did.

I hate to tell you but all brands today are junk. Avoid all of them and avoid ulcers and high blood pressure. Hire a lawn crew.

Is it an actual X model? I've been using an X320 for many years, Kawasaki 22hp. I go up steep, but short hills, and it doesn't bog down whatsoever on tall grass. Just performs the same as on a flat surface .

@@steve4628 Yes, X300. Unfortunately I guess I bought the one made on Monday. Lol. No exaggeration, nothing but problems with mine. There was a class action law suit with the model and year of the one I have, so I know I wasn’t the only one with issues. Good luck.

Dave S The X series are not sold at Home Depot. You're thinking of the D series.

You can compare a John Deere 318 to anything Deere makes today and you will quickly see that what they make today is a LOT more cheaply made. Their lawn tractors today are very overpriced for what you get, you are paying for the paint.
