John Denver was a fantastic singer and song writer. He had loads of great songs and sounded just as good live as he did on the studio versions. He is more a folk singer than country. He wrote this song on a ski lift in about 10- 15 minutes after he had a row with his wife, Annie. He was also an environmentalist before most people knew what that stood for. He died far too young. R.I.P. John.

The Annie of Annie's Song was John Denver's first wife and prime muse Annie Martel, for whom he wrote this and several other great songs, often about leaving her, missing her. falling out with her, falling back in love with her and coming back to her. Annie's Song is one of John's greatest hits and is to this day famous the world over as a popular wedding song, not least because Annie is never once mentioned by name in the lyric of the song. Incredibly, John wrote this song in less than fifteen minutes, after a minor falling out, during the time it took him to traverse on a ski lift. John got out of the lift and hurried home to get it all written dowm. John was originally a folk artist, who had great popular success with country and pop songs, and he didn't really fit neatly into any particular category, and for that reason he wasn't greatly appreciated by more committed artists who resented his success in their fields of popular music.

God, he was beautiful. I was in my late teens and 20s when he was putting out hit after hit. His voice was so clear and beautifull. I was devastated when he died. A real legend. I still listen to his music today. We lost such a great songwriter and singer.

Love that I still hear his music now. The other night someone at karaoke sang John's song "Country Road," and the people there of all ages spontaneously joined in on the chorus. So great! ❤

John and Annie lived in Aspen, Colorado back when is was still a small former mining town. John bought a piece of property there and built a house in what is now called Starwood. Annie still lives in Aspen but not in that house. They divorced and he later married a woman from Australia. They also divorced and then one fate full day on October 12th, 1997 his little Ez plane crashed and he was killed. He was on his way to his buddy, Clint Eastwoods estate to show him his new little plane. Music has never been the same. He is greatly missed.,

John was very underappreciated during the 70s. The younger generation was more interested in rock and metal. Saw him in concert and he was amazing. He loved performing. Another beautiful person gone too soon. Great reaction.

Great reaction! John Denver is my most favorite artist! I'd love to give you a list if you'd like! John wrote "Annie's Song" in a ski lift after having an argument with his 1st wife, Annie. Wrote it in 10 mins and went to his producer to figure the song out! Certainly a great wedding song! Have a listen to the original studio album version, which is still good! John Denver was always a great live performer and would change some things in songs throughout the years. The Wildlife Concert was about 2 years before his death and I listened to it everyday during high school! John also has 2 songs as state songs ("Rocky Mountain High" for Colorado and "Take Me Home, Country Roads" for West Virginia)! Also, "Shanghai Breezes" was a great song, "Sunshine on my Shoulders" is a great song too! I can chat and have a big list for you as John is my favorite!

@@menoftomorrowchannel He did a similar thing on the song "Calypso" when he visited oceanographer Jacques Cousteau on his ship, Calypso! Was on the bow of the ship, saw dolphins swimming and other creatures and it inspired him! John ended up having all the royalties go to the Jacques Cousteau Foundation!

@@menoftomorrowchannel If you want my definitive list! My 2 favorites are "Poems, Prayers, and Promises" (The Wildlife Concert is my favorite rendition) and "Follow Me." Two most famous songs are "Take Me Home, Country Roads" and "Rocky Mountain High" which I recommend both! Other songs that are good and I like are: "Sunshine on my Shoulders," "Calypso," "Shanghai Breezes" (again, the Wildlife Concert version is my favorite), "Don't Close Your Eyes" from the 80s synch-pop time, and "Wild Montana Skies" with Emmylou Harris, "Matthew" is a beautiful song and the song that made John famous is "Leaving on a Jet Plane." That's a great starting list and I hope you react to them!

He had won award from the Country music.John was out of the US when he won best new country artist...well it didn't go over well because he wasn't a Country singer! His reply when found out about the fuss his reply was" I sing songs about the country"! That was all he said...a true gentleman...🎵🇺🇸

I watched his entire career. John Denver wrote and sang the most beautiful songs. Try "Poems, Prayers and Promises". (The truth behind this song is actually funny. He'd gotten into an argument with his girlfriend, Annie, at a ski resort. He went up on a ski lift and wrote this entire song for her in about 10 minutes.) God gave him incredible talent.

I really appreciated your thoughts on the difference between music now and "back in the day". I'm 64, grew up with John, Elvis, the Beatles, Linda Ronstadt, the Eagles, and many more original, super talented artists. Nothing I've heard recently even compares to them, so I just stick to the best. Slip down any of the above-mentioned rabbit holes and you will be a happy man!

I love to watch guys react to this song. They have an expectation going in of nauseating emotion and minimally acceptable musicianship. So when they get caught up in his unique vocals and very masculine, vulnerable emotion, the expression on the reviewer’s face changes. You can’t find music like this anymore. Paul Simon’s Kathy’s Song is like that too, and from that era. In the studio version of this song, we have Lee Holdridge writing an incredible orchestral back up arrangement that sounds like it could be on a movie soundtrack. Music like this defies our ability to categorize it. It contains the cry of the human heart. It was written for Annie Martell Denver, his wife at the time. Thanks for your review!

If you want some songs that are not love songs, look into: Ravens Child, Let Us Begin, Rocky Mtn High, No One, Prisoners, Eagle and the Hawk, Wings That Fly Us Home (live version), Looking For Space, Sweet Surrender, Cool n Green n Shady, Calypso. There's loads more but that's a start. He wrote over 200 songs, recorded around 300. He gave away, as in signed over, the Royalties to 3 songs, I Want To Live, Rhymes and Reasons, Calypso. Deep, deep hole. Special man.
