John Denver - Rocky Mountain High (From "Around The World Live" DVD)
John Denver is one of the most successful and best loved recording artists of the 20th century. His easy going manner, fine voice, superb songwriting and dedication to environmental issues all combined to build a huge global fanbase that has continued to grow since his untimely death in a plane crash in 1997. This superb 5 disc set is the definitive John Denver DVD release. There are three complete live performances with full band from Australia in 1977, Japan in 1981 and England in 1986. These are complemented by a solo acoustic performance from Japan in 1984 and his performances at Farm Aid from 1985, 1987 & 1990. The final disc has two hour long documentaries made by John Denver, his 1990 Earth Day programme about environmental issues and his 1972 show about the Bighorn sheep of his beloved Rocky Mountains.
He was born in the summer of his 27th year
Comin' home to a place he'd never been before
He left yesterday behind him, you might say he was born again
You might say he found a key for every door
When he first came to the mountains his life was far away
On the road and hangin' by a song
But the string's already broken and he doesn't really care
It keeps changin' fast and it don't last for long
But the Colorado rocky mountain high
I've seen it rainin' fire in the sky
The shadow from the starlight is softer than a lullabye
Rocky mountain high
He climbed cathedral mountains, he saw silver clouds below
He saw everything as far as you can see
And they say that he got crazy once and he tried to touch the sun
And he lost a friend but kept his memory
Now he walks in quiet solitude the forest and the streams
Seeking grace in every step he takes
His sight has turned inside himself to try and understand
The serenity of a clear blue mountain lake
And the Colorado rocky mountain high
I've seen it rainin' fire in the sky
You can talk to God and listen to the casual reply
Rocky mountain high
Now his life is full of wonder but his heart still knows some fear
Of a simple thing he cannot comprehend
Why they try to tear the mountains down to bring in a couple more
More people, more scars upon the land
And the Colorado rocky mountain high
I've seen it rainin' fire in the sky
I know he'd be a poorer man if he never saw an eagle fly
Rocky mountain high
It's Colorado rocky mountain high
I've seen it rainin' fire in the sky
Friends around the campfire and everybody's high
Rocky mountain high

Such an amazing man. My uncle was a ranger at Mesa Verde Nat. Park in the 70's and died there. My parents wrote John about his love for Colorado and for permission to play the song at my Uncle's funeral as he had been a huge fan. Mr. Denver responded back with a beautiful handwritten letter and a personal recording of that song. Years later I also found out he called my Grandma to express his condolences as well. That letter still hangs framed in my childhood home. What a loss. Uncle Bob,Grandma and Mr. Denver

I loved JD when I a kid and he inspired me to learn to play the guitar (and to long to live in the mountains, which I now do), but during high school and college in the late 1970's and early 1980's he was distinctly uncool and I stopped listening to him. In college, I was working parking and traffic control for a big arena and maybe in 1982 or 1983 he came through in concert. Before the show while we were directing traffic, I went along with the groans of the other guys working there about how lame JD was. But that night while I stood entranced through the whole concert, I was reminded that I was right, as a kid, to think that he was amazing. Two things stick out in my memory: One is that of all the many concert crowds that I worked, the JD crowd (he sold out the place) was the single most happy, mellow, and pleasant group that I encountered in several years working there. Not a whiff of weed in the place, so it wasn't drug-induced -- everybody just seemed to be on a natural high when they left, full of peace and love, cliched as it is. The second thing that stuck out to me was that JD put on a nearly 3 hour show (which was unusual for those days), and amazingly never once left the stage. He did a 20-30 minute solo set in the middle of the concert with just him and his guitar in order to give his band a break, but he didn't take a single break himself. We are now used to long shows by hard-working artists, now that concerts, not album sales, are where performers make their big money. But in the early 80's, you just didn't see that kind of work ethic and determination to give people their hard-earned money's worth. I saw a lot of concerts in those days, and all too often they were perfunctory, lazy performances by big stars who were going through the motions to promote their album sales. I never once saw a single performer -- in any genre -- who worked as hard as JD did that night. I left feeling a bit sheepish at having "abandoned" JD because he wasn't a cool rocker, and the memory of that night still puts a lump in my throat. I can still feel the warm feeling that that shaggy-haired blond guy with granny glasses and an acoustic guitar gave to his fans that night. I remember thinking that most performers get on stage to feel their fans love them -- I thought then, and think now, that he had the air of a man who loved his fans even more than we loved him and was determined to show it. The other day, as I was hiking in the mountains, this song came back into my head for some reason. I realized, as I was looking out at lakes and snow-covered western peaks and forests, that part of the reason I have the joy of living where I do is because of a dream that John Denver put in a young boy's head, 40 years ago now. I am grateful. Rest in peace, John.

oldwest517 Well said oldwest! John was my first exposure to music and acoustic guitars. I was very young in the early seventies listening with my big sister. Your story is a mirror image of mine as far as John goes. I was driving in the mountains of Tennessee the minute the news broke of his death, and I was devastated. I felt like I didn't get to say a proper goodbye to an old friend. I'm a proud fan of his, and always will be.

oldwest517 Dude, that was an awesome story and set of memories. Parallels a lot of my own feelings about Denver, as not until his death did I start listening to his music after I stopped listening to it around 11 years of age myself. Now when the craziness of life wants to overwhelm me, his music, his lyrics,... they keep me on track, and keep a smile on my face even in some of the lowest points. Thanks for sharing that.

I don't listen to very many singers performing live, but out of all the ones I've heard, Denver was the only one who seemed to sound better in front of a crowd than in a studio, and I think that is rather telling of the kind of man he was; constantly giving of himself. What a great singer he was.

One thing John had that MANY (in fact Most) musicians don't, he could sing LIVE almost like he did in a studio with just his guitar and his voice. He didn't need an entire band and all sorts of electronic helpers and instruments. This man was the REAL DEAL and extremely talented. He recognized his gift early and he shared it with the rest of us through his incredible folk music which still touches people throughout the entire world. There are very few musicians who had or have a gift like John Denver did.

You can talk to God and listen to his casual reply, Rocky Mountain High....such a blessing to have John Denver share his gifts, he so loved life and wanted everyone to get along. He inspired so many, was very humble and gracious. I grew up listening and singing along with him. He made so many happy and truly wish his message of peace and not war would be so. If only we could respect life and see the good in each other and do all we could help each other out, that would be great. A very compassionate and understanding man. I pray he is with God.

I am from Austria - we also have those "rocky mountain high" here... This song is a manifest to all soulful people around the world: please come "down to earth"! please see the "serenity in a clear blue mountain lake"! It is incredible to me, that a singer far away, singing about some mountains I have never seen....speakes out the very truth: be real, be kind - be the person you are! I really love this song - it speakes out the core of our lives: be yourself! be natural! just...be!

very true. John was the kind of guy you could sit down and have coffee with and talk to, he was just a normal guy, sure he was a big star, but he would just shrug it off, and he sang from his heart because every song he wrote is something he experienced

There's something about this song that always brings tears to my eyes. It's like a love-song to nature. Especially when it gets to the part near the end, what I call a "tag," where Mr. Denver sings, "Colorado Rocky Mountain high..." emphatically. If I don't tear up before that, then right there usually does it. The man's a genius, and this, among his other songs, is beautiful. Just beautiful.

Always, I really mean, always great to hear Denver's music. My dad loved his concert videos they would play on PBS. His voice is etched in my memory as a kid. Some of his songs are like part of the branches that bend in the forests he sang about, , the river's rolling along the blue sky full and going on forever. Take Me Home Country Road one of the sweetest songs ever written. I grew up listening to Zappa/Mothers, The Dead, The Stones, The Allman Brothers, Pink Floyd, Dylan, Neil Young, but John Denver always crept in easily.

His soothing and innocent music takes me back to the 70's when I was a young man full of hopes and dreams :)

This song means to much to me. "I know he'd be a poorer man if he never saw an eagle fly" makes me so thankful for the natural beauty around me. I've been rich in the fact that I've been lucky enough in my life to see eagles fly and understand exactly what he's singing about. I was also reborn in the summer of my 27th year. :)

Wonderful performance of an immortal song from an immortal music icon. For someone who never saw him in a live concert, I must say that the quality is equal or even better than the studio recordings. :)

My second grandpa loved John Denver. Every time I listen to him I think of my grandpa. He died of brain cancer when I was 5. He inspired me so much when I was little. Rip my second grandpa 1954 to 2006.

He gave us his music and his soul, and he tried to save our land as best he could. I think the world will miss this gentle man and his music, I know I do. Keep flying John we will catch up.

People who truly love him are in tune with their own spirit of kindness and love, just like he was. Although I wasn’t born in the generation with him, I still feel a connection beyond that. Love you John, and all his wonderful fans too 💖
