He was one of the special class of songwriter that was able to tread multiple genres. Somewhat Country, Somewhat Folk, and played on Top40 radio, he was ALL OF THE ABOVE. I believe you can best describe his music with three words: Peaceful, Grateful & Joyful.

I always thought that the song was about finding that place that resonates with you. It's different for everyone. You know it when you see it. For me it is the rugged Northern California Coast and the Sierra Nevada. You don't have to do a damned thing but sit and take it all ... like you were going home to a place you'd never been before

I think you hit the nail on the head. The Mountains have a magic, not the little ones, the real ones like the Rockies, the Sierra Nevada, the Alps, ... it's a song about finding his place. The that place that resonates with his spirit. For me it's the Sierra Nevada and the Coastal Redwoods of the Big Sur coast.

He is considered many things. Back Home Again was country; Rocky Mountain High is not. He came out of folk with the Mitchell Trio. Be he evolved into his own category. Songs like this, or The Eagle and the Hawk, or Spirit, fit no established category. They aren’t folk, country or rock. They are John Denver music. Denver himself called it “western” music, and while some were cowboy songs, most were of love, of people, of nature, of flying, the mountains and the great outdoors, and always a longing for home. His guitar style, the Travis picking, was from folk and country, but his music was broad and unique to him. Songs like The Wings That Fly Us home stand alone as unique.

Some friends and I used to camp in the Colorado Rockies, the Grand Tetons and Alberta way, back in the seventies. There were these places that struck you to the bone with their beauty. In the late spring of '76 we camped along Grand Tetons, with the snow-capped mountain range in the background, piercing low hanging gray clouds ("poking the eye of God") nesting behind a line of tall pines at their foot, a clear ice-cold mountain lake in front of them, and in the foreground was a field of multitude of different colored wild flowers. We nick-named the place "Cheyenne Valley." We cooked thick steaks, with its juices dripping over open flames, causing them to lick the the meat, along with baked potatoes, and drank beer cooled in the ice-cold lake. Best damn meal I ever had or ever will! If there's a heaven, then Cheyenne Valley was a glimpse of it!

He was an early environmentalist/conservationist. The beauty of this song encaptures the beauty of the Rocky Mountains & the beauty of the United States. I would consider this folk music. John Denver did a lot of cross-over between folk, country & pop. But his best stuff were the heart-felt ballads. 🌏✌️🇺🇸💙

I thought he was crazy until I went to visit him and saw how peaceful he had become. “Now he walks in quiet solitude with the forests and the streams” always makes me teary now. It really was healing for him. I’m thankful he made the move.

Have you visited Colorado? It’s a gorgeous state full of red canyons,roaring rapids,mountain meadows full of wildflowers,mountains over 14,000 feet above sea level and hundreds of waterfalls. I’ve been fortunate to live in Colorado for 7 years and hopefully many more. You would enjoy reading John Muir’s books. He was a wildlife biologist,author and helped establish the Natural Parks. He also helped politicians put many laws in place to protect the environment and wildlife. Colorado still faces problems from land developers. Fortunately,many politicians in Colorado realize the importance of keeping the natural land free of human development.

Awesome reaction to an American folk icon! Not only was he the 38th best- selling music artist of all, he was a leading advocate for environmental causes in the 70s and also portrayed that love of the wilderness and country through his music. He was a huge fan of flying, too. Which caused him an early demise in 1997, as he crashed in his small experimental plane. He was admired all around the world. His song 'The Wings that Fly Us Home' is my favorite, as it's very soulful, and in fact played at his funeral.

You're beautiful. When you started laughing, I felt as if you were grasping my heart and squeezing it gently ! I loved your reaction to "everybody high" and to the whole song. He IS talking about the damn developers, who would like to turn the whole country into one big city. They dont give a damn what they have to destroy to accomplish their plan and make more and more money . They have to be blocked constantly or there won't be any of the beautiful wild country left. I read that when he says he's "seen it raining fire in the sky" he's referring to a time he was in the mountains camping with friends and they saw a meteor shower. Seeing it from high up there it must have been incredible . And have you ever seen an eagle fly ?

Hi Tasha. John was one of the great folk/rock singer/songwriters of the 70s. They were such great songs that all you needed was the singer and a guitar or piano. John Denver, James Taylor, Jim Croce and Carole king etc. Lots of great music from all of them. I am a big country music fan but my taste is very ecclectic so I really like a lot of genres. As a country fan (not so much new countrry/pop) I can tell you that if you like good country music you will enjoy these folk/rockers as well. It's all about the stories and not just the lights and distorted sounds. Enjoy!!

Edit: Ohmygosh sorry for the epic endless comment rant. Something about hearing him again threw me I have so much love did him and.. anyways. Sorry for writing so much. You don’t have to feel pressured to read it. Ok so here goes: Oh wow.. I was just thinking my first audio cassette tape was Hall&Oates but I might be wrong -it might be John Denver! Or maybe I had him on a record can’t remember. Either way.. wonderful 🌿 I LOVE This man. Bless him. ..”They tear the mountains down and bring in a couple more” .. I had the deep feels when my mom explained to me that line. (I didn’t get it. I was little). Anyway,, She said that the phrase that follows “and bring in a couple more” meant bring in the skyscrapers and the “scars” are trucks digging and plowing through.. Also. Off topic but. How wrong people are when they disparage the humble pigeon.. saying “they’re filthy rats with wings” etc. B. S. !!!!!!!! Indigenous to the cliffs in southern NY, where cities hug the Hudson River, the humble pigeon is more clever and social than most people might think. And If we didn’t crap up their homes with our city, they wouldn’t have to live in our filth. They would be nesting high on the cliff faces breathing fresh clean air, all up and down the Hudson they’d be living their best birdie lives! Not eating leftover French fries and our gross littered garbage. ✨Annie’s song is a triumph of love’s beauty, Whike also there’s achingly longing . ✨ 🕊Fly high John Denver🕊 You were too good for us, I see why God and the angels wanted you back ao soon. I thank Heaven for sharing you with us at all! 🕊 Bless and keep you all, to friends watching this. I love you. You matter. You are enough. You are worth it. ✨💖✨ ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨ 🕊🪴🕊🌿🕊🪴🕊🌿🕊🪴🕊 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

John Denver is probably best described as folk, although he really just made the music he wanted to make and let others argue about what to call it. As far as his relation to country music; at the time (this song came out in 1972), most country music had a very slick, highly produced sound. It gave it a very urban feel. Listen to some Glen Campbell or Charlie Rich for an idea. Some people who wanted a more rural sound would seek out artists like Denver or The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Check out "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" by them. It caused some controversy. Denver actually received several awards from the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music in the mid-70s.
@joeterp5615

Yeah, country has certainly had some highly produced sounds over the years - not generally among my favorites. I recently kinda discovered Eddie Arnold (his heyday was long before I started listening to country in the early 80s). I downloaded a large greatest hits collection. I love his early stuff. He has such a smooth effortless voice and there is a lot of steel guitar giving his songs a great signature country sound. But then he switched to a more heavily produced sound - which gained him millions of more fans outside of country music, but isn’t really my thing. It’s too packaged for me, and almost soulless, seems like an early precursor to elevator music lol! But I guess I shouldn’t insult it too much, since millions loved those songs. For me, it just means I listen to about 2/3 of his greatest hits collection, then switch to something else when the style changes.

Country Road by John Denver. I'd love to see you react to Rainmaker by Traffic. You'd appreciate the flute.

To me, John Denver was more Folk than country. He did many fun songs as well. He often teamed up with Jim Henson and the Muppets. Look up one of his versions of 'Grandms's Feather Bed' for a fun quirky song.

Definitely agree in viewing Ken Burns documentary. U will really enjoy it, learn a lit from ut, nit just yellowstone, but any if his docs. John Denver might be the most under rated musician ever. Master story teller. Only other story teller in tge same class is Gordon Lightfoot. Thats another artist u really need to dive into
