As a foreigner, I thought that John Dillermand was a problematic government official or CEO I didn't know about. Needless to say, I didn't expect to learn that Danish kids television is extremely European (even by European standards) and that John has a prehensile 25-foot Hugh Grant. EDIT: So first off, wow I didn't expect this to get this much attention at all. Secondly and most importantly, yes I am aware that Europe isn't a country, it's not a monolith, it's not one single culture. It's a collection of different cultures and not all of them fit my description. Why did I use "European"? Because I wanted to say that it's distinctly western but decidedly un-American in how "out there" it is. I meant no harm in it, I actually hoped that some would take it as a compliment that I thought most of Europe was funny, wacky, and creative. Evidently that wasn't the case. Sorry if I offended anyone.

It's not restricted to television either. There are children's books about nudity here as well where the protagonist and her family go to a nudist beach on vacation by accident and she learns about different kinds of bodies in an entirely non-embarrassing, non-sexualised, and safe way. I can understand why this might seem strange to some people from cultures where these things are much more taboo, but it is quite normal and natural here.

Hi neighbour! 👋 (a Swede here)! 😊 It’s fascinating how much we sometimes can differ on a specific culture phenomena, being how close we are both ideologically and geographically (I’m just 4 km away). I love your more relaxed ways, being more in touch with your emotional selves and speaking your minds more than we do. I think that has served you well. We have been bound more on a ideological/theoretical level (immigration being one example). I’d like to ask you one thing though. I don’t have an issue of this so much on a sexual level - as this clearly isn’t one in that way - but I think of the focus on male gender. Men have always taken up a lot of space in history. That’s obvious from history books, in opinions, news, politics, research and studies, medicine, economy and so forth. We still do. We’ve also been dominating in violence and in sexual advances. We still are. My question to you is one of the gender equality and what your thoughts are about this cartoon figure in regards to being a male (with a d**k too) - and once again being the “promoted” gender with its sexual organ - when women (both historically and contemporary) almost always have come in second? Their sexuality especially. I know that for example the MeToo-movement didn’t gain too much traction in Denmark in the beginning but have only lately started to be more talked about (in comparison to Sweden for example - at least from what I’ve heard). How are your thoughts on this on a gender equality note? Is that not so much of an issue in Denmark and if so - what have you done as Danes to deal with it? Best regards from a fellow Scandinavian!! 👋☺️

I happen to work in a Danish kindergarten and this show has been going on for around 7 months by now. Not even a single kid has developed the slightest side effect of this. They sing the song because it's funny and watch it because it's funny. The target audience is definitely the kids I work with and none of them has even come close to the sexualized topic when we talk about it. Usually the conversations goes around that boys have one, girls don't, but we all have asses - And washing hands are essential after going the bathroom.

I worked on John Dillermand, doing the set designs, floorplans, and beat boards. The first few episodes, I had a lot of revisions to tone down certain elements, like I couldn't have the penis touch anyone, it would have to pick up a stick, and use the stick to prod people for attention etc. There was a lot of effort going into keeping everything as innocent and light hearted as possible. Whenever someone takes offense of the show, I can be almost certain, that they have not actually seen it. Sure you can find it boring, off putting, or in poor taste, but it's really not offensive from a sexual point of view.

Perhaps if we desexulized the body for children then they wouldn't grow up to feel they are just a sex object, life and the body is about more than sex and understanding and being comfortable with your body is a great way to help kids build confidence in their body which will translate to greater autonomy and spreading up about their health and others who may try to take advantage of their bodies! @drdewott9154
@drdewott9154 3 года назад
Yeah, I mean the same network's Ultra service, aimed at slightly older kids also has another show called Ultra smider tøjet, aka Ultra strips down. Essentially an educational show where a class of children about the age of 12 gets into a room with a number of adults who then drop their wardrobes, after which the kids can then ask questions about their bodies. And these adults are all just ordinary people. One may be doing body building in their spare time, another may just be transgender, and all of varying body types. Really it's all to like tell kids getting into their teenage years to not be ashamed of their own bodies which I remember in recent years has been a notable issue with things like commercial magazines and instagram and snapchat feeds constantly filled with pictures edited to present the users behind as "beautiful" as possible. Like smoothing out wrinkles, positioning the eyes better, larger breasts, greater curves, more muscles all that stuff. I mean it came to a point where several wouldn't even go showering after gym class because they were ashamed of their bodies. So in other words then yeah we need shows like John Dillermand and Ultra Strips down

This show has changed mine and the life of my family. It really has taught my children how to be more efficient in daily activities and problem solving and has provided an example of how to use their body as a pogo stick to get to school saving money and the environment at the same time. I have written my congressman and they are officially changing the entire curriculum of sexual education at their schools to just watching this ground breaking and highly informative and intellectually stimulating series. LOL that is such a Danish show! On a related note, I am imagining how absolutely impossible it would be for something even close to this to exist here in the US. I have lived in the US for most of my adult life, but I have also spent a considerable amount of time outside of it. I find that USA has such a strange, contradictory attitude when it comes to human bodies and procreation. We are encouraged to sexualize female bodies by using them to sell almost everything and that is deemed totally fine by almost everyone. And yet, we are horrified when women breastfeed their babies in public (a very, very non-sexual use of the female body, BTW). We are expected to find our own partners by essentially 'trying out' different people for that perfect fit. And yet, we frown upon proper sex-ed and at times even the use of birth control as if just by denying their existence unplanned pregnancies and STDs would simply vanish. It's all so weirdly convoluted. Kind of like putting your feet on two different boats and still somehow hoping you won't fall overboard. 🤷‍♂️
