I read about the 69th a long time ago & a quote stuck in my mind from a Confederate general when he saw their flag. He is quoted as saying "Here comes that damned Green flag again"
I'm proud and sad all at the same time ! John Reilly st Patrick's brigade & the fighting 69th reg !!! True heroes. Told in stories passed down in my family. God bless those brave men and GB JFK !
Ladies and gentlemen I suggest you not be so pedantic and verging on ungrateful for the contribution of the USA to the life we now enjoy in Ireland. Freedom was hard won on both sides of the Atlantic. JFK’s gesture to the Irish state by gifting that beautiful piece of Irish history to us is inspiring. I suggest you all choose to get inspired and get busy.
Battles don't always have universal names, especially during a war. Naming is typically something historians do later to simplify study. The flag suggests the 69th called the battle Gaines Hill, not Mill.
I suppose it would have dampened this historical event if JFK would have mentioned that in the Battle of Fredericksburg there were Irish Brigades on both sides of the combatants.
considering one side was fighting against the USA, yes it would have dampened the mood. Not gonna honor the enemy bru. That's like you celebrating the Donetsk People's Republic terrorists. What the Confederate did does not change what the 69th New York did.
