In his June 11, 1963 speech, President Kennedy responds to the threats of violence and obstruction on the University of Alabama campus following desegregation attempts, explaining that the United States was founded on the principle that all men are created equal and thus, all American students are entitled to attend public educational institutions, regardless of race.
He also discusses how discrimination affects education, public safety, and international relations, noting that the country cannot preach freedom internationally while ignoring it domestically. The President asks Congress to enact legislation protecting all Americans' voting rights, legal standing, educational opportunities, and access to public facilities, but recognizes that legislation alone cannot solve the country's problems concerning race relations.

Unfortunately America has marched more and more to right wing authoritarianism since JFK was assassinated. Wealthy Rich control the Congress and the Supreme Court. The Civil Rights Act of of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 are now gutted by a radical Supreme Court paid for by billionaires. The GOP are supressing Voter Rights, Education Equality, and Health Rights of Women just as a start. Brown vs The Board of Education may be gutted soon as well.

Listening to President Kennedy’s speeches, it strikes me that one of the key differences from his speech and the speech of more recent presidents is the articulation of eternal truths. President Kennedy’s speech does not talk around these truths or avoid mentioning them in favor of more neutral language. His speeches really demonstrated political courage that you see less and less of nowadays.

John F Kennedy was Racist. As Senator, Kennedy fully supported the Racist Southern Democrats in opposing two Civil Rights Bills written by REPUBLICAN Civil Rights Leader Dwight D. Eisenhower, who also gave African American, Hispanic, Native American and Asian minorities in the Military their equal and civil rights in 1942, that would have given All African Americans Equal and Civil Rights in 1957 and again in 1959 - He also refused to let Sammy Davis Jr. perform in the white house and he constantly used N ~ in private. This speech was a testament to JFK's courage and strength of character. Many don't realize that this speech, which was unprecedented by a U.S. president, posed a tremendous risk to his re-election to office. He knew that what he said would alienate a great many Southern delegates who helped him win his first election. But he was willing to assume this risk out of moral conscience. This is why as a Black man I think that JFK was the GOAT of U.S. presidents. I even revere him more than Obama.

Johnson too......All of the southern Democrats told him that it would cost the Democrats the South for a long time.....it took a little longer than they expected, but except for a couple of elections (Carter and Clinton) the South has voted Republican in national elections ever since. This did, however, hand Johnson 96% of the black vote in 64, it has cost the Democrats many elections ever since. I believe, as you and many others probably believe, that it was worth it. To correct such an injustice, is worth a couple of elections. Johnson was able to pass a LOT of bills that helped African Americans (the poor as well). He was the last of the New Deal Democrats. Johnson said several times that FDR was his political hero.

If you could bring back John Kennedy today; as he was; he would be vilified and marginalized by his own Party for being Moderate; and not " Progressive " enough. Absolutely an amazing speech , a much needed speech, still even needed in today's world 60 years later. The USA has gone to the dumpster since Kennedy was assassinated and strong men like him, Martin Luther King, and his brother Robert Kennedy are sadly looked down on by half of our United States population. There's so much division out there now from people who would rob us of freedom and democracy and equal rights for all racial groups in this land. What we need are more heroes like the Kennedys and Martin Luther King who will be courageous and stand up and speak the truth. Sadly, some of these courageous men get killed for speaking the truth. But anarchy will prevail if good men stay silent and don't speak up.

@@jag5798 There are so many inaccuracies in your comment. You seriously need to re-examine your facts. JFK 100% voted for the Civil Rights Act of 1957. However he did so begrudgingly because it was a Republican dismantled/poorly crafted version of a better bill that he advocated for and it was his belief if that dismantled bill passed, progress would stalemate. www.govtrack.us/congress/votes/85-1957/s75 (check out Massachusetts) As for why he didn't have any civil rights "legislature" in office (legislation*), is A) He did, you can start with the Civil Rights Act of 1960, B) He was dealing with the USSR at the same time, and C) He had already helped draft CRA of 1964 and was talking about the importance of civil rights at campaign rallies before he was assassinated. MLK marched to Washington because it was the nation's capital and he knew it would get national attention, which is what was needed for congress to act. He called actions like this "Causing a crisis" and said it was the only thing that would lead to change. Much of what you said is known conservative fake news that was spread online. John called it as he saw it and understood it. In his short tenure I have no doubt whatsoever that he was the President of the highest moral order, of the most pure and righteously oriented courage this country has ever had. The great privilege of his profound dedication to humanity was available to all of the country and world to witness for but a short time. God bless you and your brothers my dear President Kennedy. false. JFK was clearly Racist, just like TRUMP and BIDEN ~ vote #BradHartliep #President, the only candidate for President who will deliver Equality and Justice to Blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans and America's Poor ..

By the way, in addition to some of JFK 's accomplishments include: outlawing discrimination in Federal hiring/contracts, integrating the Coast Guard, the Secret Service- he was the first president to have an African American assigned to a presidential detail (Bolden), he also hand selected an African American to be an astronaut in the NASA space program. Established Lawyers Committee For Civil Rights- original bill that LBJ signed was JFK's bill with a few extras. As for Sammy Davis, he was invited to the White House, but could not be photographed with his wife Mai Britt. Sammy understood it. So don't try to make more of this. JFK needed support for his programs no matter how repulsive he found the Southern Senators beliefs. The programs benefitted everyone, including African Americans. For more info, see: www.jfklibrary.org. By the way, with all your misinformation, the country doesn't need another president like that, but good luck to you anyway. The great thing about our country is that anyone can run as long as you meet the Constitutional requirements.

Yes he clipped his puppet strings and realized in the face of death he would clean up our government ran by the billionaires that rule us today. Those days are not over. Remember the real Jack Ruby, not in the movie, did warn us of the one world government coming. He knew he was going to be eliminated by his own puppet masters and wanted to expose what he knew. Jesus was a threat to Roman politicians and the elite. Kennedy and Jesus were publicly executed to make an example to the people. Don’t tread on their evils

The Kennedy kids were beautifully educated. Years later, Bobby Kennedy, on his way to give a campaign speech to a mostly black crowd, was surprised with the shocking news that MLK had just been killed, and that the crowd did not yet know about it. His police escort urged him to cancel, flatly refused to go to the event and peeled off from his motorcade! Imagine that? They were so afraid of a black crowd that they abandoned the candidate for president. Bobby rapidly scribbled down the framework of an extemporaneous speech in which he gave them his all, and did his utmost to console them, quoting the Greek poet Aeschylus, and identifying his own experience of his brother's assassination with their grief and anger and loss. Treating the crowd like human beings with bright minds and broken hearts, who deserved the very best he could give them, probably contributed to the fact that it was one of the few cities in the country that did not see riots that night.
