Today we have part four of our John Frusciante Returns series. This is the latest installment of Rick Rubin’s on-going series of in-depth interviews with the Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist. And if this is the first interview you’re hearing, make sure to go back and check out the first three parts.
On this episode we’ll hear John Frusciante play through more of his guitar parts, and he’ll explain how he came up with some of the best guitar melodies in modern rock history. John also talks about how playing along to classic heavy metal albums from Black Sabbath and Van Halen, as well as dancing all night at drum and bass clubs helped shape his style on the 2002 album, By The Way. He also explains how listening to Brandy, Destiny’s Child and Wu-Tang Clan helped influence his playing on Stadium Arcadium.

ABOUT BROKEN RECORD
For generations of music lovers, the liner notes on albums were a central part of the way music was heard. You bought an album and it came with an accompanying narrative: a digression, an aside, a backstory-maybe even an invented history. We intuitively understood that great music required not just listening but conversation between the artist and the audience and the audience and the rest of the world.
Broken Record is a podcast that restarts those conversations-in a world without liner notes-for a new audience of music lovers.
Broken Record is hosted by Justin Richmond with interviews by producer Rick Rubin, writer Malcolm Gladwell, and former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam.

This is such a great idea, mostly for music lovers and John Frusciante fans, but also for John himself. On a historical level he's one of the best musicians of the 20th and 21st centuries and deserves to be documented and understood like this. On a personal level, I'm glad that he can do a real interview about actual music and other stuff that's important to him, with an interviewer who cares about him and is respectful and doesn't exploit him.

14:12 “It’s magical to have things that you can do, that you’re not throwing on the surface for people to see.” This is one the reasons why RHCP has managed to stay fresh and relevant for decades. John’s a musical encyclopedia and his tastes are so broad. All of that is coming together in some subtle way in his songwriting and playing.

Many people were full of confidence saying things like "I can clearly see how John's solo career is interfering with the band's original sound in songs like My Cigarette". And as it's very often the case, they were wrong. It's actually a Flea song. We now know that John didn't even want to use synths or drum machines on the new albums. Fans and critics think they know what's going on and who wrote what but they're often wrong about these things when they're just guessing.

I can't remember how he described it but basically was making hypotheticals of how bad earth could be. His main website that he deleted is on the wayback machine website, but seems like it doesn't have everything. The blog he had previous to that I don't remember the name and he deleted it a long time ago. I remember he made a post describing that practice he does with the playing accents on each different beat and all that, and long posts about his philosophy and thoughts. He mentions a lot of that in this series, but the text was very dense and intellectual. This series at least preserves a lot of his thoughts that for some reason he deleted from the internet

This Frusciante series is the most fascinating I’ve heard of any musical conversation. The way John describes and demos Venice Queen, I was as surprised as Rick being fascinated by the rhythm against the chords. It reminds me most of Richie Havens, who has one of the most simple chording styles, but a griot rhythm that’s otherworldly. The surf style reminded me of a local DC band back in the 80’s, the Insect Surfers, whose music I revisited lately. Check them out, it’s a very sophisticated surf sound.

What we need is a song by song storytelling of his entire rhcp music, with video of him talking / guitar. Would pay a lot for that

Absolutely loved the four parts. Especially when musical influences come full circle. In the early 90s the German band Cucumber Men were formed because of their love for the Chili Peppers and their only single influenced the guitar lick of Can't Stop. Love it!

Wasn't expecting part 4 so soon but I'l happily take it. These have been some of the most enjoyable interviews I've heard with John and it's no doubt down to the comfortable relationship he has with Rick and the history they've shared working together since Blood Sugar. The average interviews must really start to grate on someone line John after a long tour and getting asked the same things over and over, whereas you can tell John is actually interested in the conversation with Rick. Hoping for more after John releases his next solo work.
