ArchDaily had the honor of visiting the incredible bamboo world created by the architect John Hardy and his tribe in Bali, Indonesia. After visiting houses, a school, a hotel, factories, a permaculture farm, and many other structures created in bamboo, we were left speechless.

Hi! I am from Bangladesh. Even 30 years before bamboo the main material of our houses were bamboo. Even the house I was born was bamboo made. But unfortunately we took it as a sign of poverty. Now I don't see anymore beautiful bamboo houses. Though now live in a luxury apartment but after watching this video I felt the bamboo house I was born was the most beautiful place I ever lived.

Same here in the Philippines. People have concrete houses instead of bamboo unlike before. But I guess it's hard to find good builders that can make the structure beautiful and strong against storms. The problem is bamboo found in local market is usually untreated and people either don't know how to treat it themselves or they simply have no time and energy to do it. But time is changing and people are now gaining more awareness. There are even gov't and private organizations who've been teaching tribes and locals to cultivate bamboo instead of cutting lumbers and teaching them methods of building good and beautiful structures using bamboo. Even westerners prefer bamboo against wood lumber.
@OktoPutsch
@OktoPutsch Год назад
What makes a sign of poverty is a poor design, whatever the material is. For Hundred of thousand years people built their own homes with what was at their disposal. A poor design reflects a poor mind, which most often produce en effective poverty. When people smartly exploit the materials at hand, you can be sure they're far to be poor, as they will always have the skillset to turn common things into masterpieces (or gold, to keep the metaphore), meaning they are ressourceful in terms of creativity and life challenging.
@OktoPutsch
@OktoPutsch Год назад
@@loryasis7837 Good you're there, i've wondered since years why people in the philippines didn't build earthground houses, like small hillshaped designed houses, it would let the wind flow over homes, without grips for storms to "decapsulate" homes and worse. Maybe there would be something to litteraly dig into for reliable stormproofs and sustainable homes built out of local materials, rammed earth, bamboo inner structures and furnitures. Cheap, affordable, strong. Bonus : garden on top.

As a Bangladeshi, I empathize deeply, and I firmly believe that we should not lose hope. A revolution is necessary to embark upon. As an architecture student, my unwavering focus remains on bamboo, as it holds utmost significance in construction. Together, we must strive to elevate bamboo as a vital material in our endeavors.

To live in concrete houses are not very healthy. Even in Germany they are taking more and more natural materials to build a house. Back to the routs 👍

Dear sir, As an architecture student, I'm greatly motivated by your thoughts and view on life and beauty of creation. You proved that merely getting a graduation certificate doesn't always make us an architect. What we should have is feelings....to understand the nature and its need, to create beauty within nature. In the course of my studies, what I've actually felt is the lack of humanitarian approach in teaching and i rarely see people with a LIVELY mind! I was greatly disappointed till now and your speech helped me in clearing my way without bothering anything. Thank you ❤️

LOL! I'm pretty sure he means figuratively and aesthetically. He's mistaken though. The technology isn't the limitation. The economics and prevailing culture are the limits. Modern architecture is far more dictated by economics and culture than user experience and aesthetics. He's also mistaken at least partly about the issue of building codes and engineering. It's not beyond engineers, as I'm sure you know, to come up with good structural design with a given material like bamboo. It's just that tradition, economics, logistics, and culture make messing with it difficult.

"I'm learning different" not learning impaired.❤ His designs are perfect for Bali. Completely in tune with the natural surroundings. In fact, similar to the wooden joglos (houses) but more sustainable. I can't imagine how much it costs to stay in one of these villages. Definitely not for we hobo travellers on a budget. Fresh out of school back-packers are a different, less respectful breed. Bali is now much more exclusive. I'm happy for the indeginous peeps.

Most architects that have a degree are just draftsman. They aren't creating works of art. A true architect is an artist that creates beautiful artistic spaces for people and there aren't too many of them in the world. You my friend, are NOT an "architect". You ARE AN ARTIST WHO CREATES BEAUTIFUL SPACES FOR PEOPLE! You are one of the few. Your works uplift and inspire the human spirit!

It's wonderful to live & move within a piece of art that's built with Love & Joy. Plus wood & bamboo have a lingering life aura that warms a space. It's proven science that wood is affected & changed by the sound waves of our voices, singing & music as well as our physical interactions with it. We actually become one with the building.

It's all temporary the treatment, eventually, bees will bore into it and make hives. Other insects will also bore into it . But in time also it will dry and crack and water will also effect it and make it soft. It's good for awhile but not forever our place is 15 years old and half of it is not doing so well. But because it's so fibrous it holds on. But it's just temporary

This reminds me of how traditional archaeologists think of new ways of looking at history - with disdain and distrust. I love this so much and I pray it spreads with it's amazing sustainabilty💜🕉️

Bamboo is good, our place is over 15 years old and is slowly deteriorating and getting taken over by insects. Termites, ants and bees all love bamboo. No matter how much you treat it or anything. It's not forever. But it does last a long time if the bamboo is old growth. It's flexible and beautiful shapes can be made but it's not forever it's temporary

This man puts in architectural words what I feel in my heart and I secretely build it "inside" a tree. I wish he could one day come and see my humble Secret Artwork Space and Bird Nesting Sanctuary. It is somewhere in the rainy UK.
