John Henry runs third in the 2nd division, losing by a nose and a neck after getting no rest on the front end from 2 horses that fade badly in the stretch, while John never quits.
There is a REASON why Bob Weems did not usually call the finish or the last 70 yards of a race. ..especially a big race. A few miles away from the Monmouth Track, there was a swimming pool filled with "wise guys" near the beach at Long Branch, NJ. You could easily hear the races from Monmouth because the sound traveled clearly over the Shrewsbury Inlet. So bookies set up shop on lounge chairs by the pool - Eventually the track and the town figured out what was going on, so to disrupt this vice, there was often no obvious call of a winner. The books had to wait for the race results to be broadcast with a 6 minute delay from a local radio station. The idea was that the books would have a slow-down in action.
really miss the late Bob Weems. His calls would echo through the entire Monmouth racetrack. not in this call but in many calls he would say "all coming away to a good start" even if that wasnt always true....
Horatius is my mare's daddy! I can't believe I found a video of him running! I could only find a picture. How awesome is this? He got second place and that's good enough for me!!!
AMAZING. Racetrack announcers once upon a time spoke deliberately, sparingly AND AS A RESULT you could hear and understand what they were saying. Compare this to the slobbering, jabbering useless garbage on TVG in 2016.
