Great great racehorse. The 1970’s foaled horses were incredible. Secretariat, John Henry, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, Forego, Ruffian, Spectacular Bid... I’m sure I’ve overlooked some. What a decade for great foals!

That's when horse racing was at the best.Horses would run as 4 and 5 yr olds and you could follow them .you formed a bond with them.you could talk horses with other horse players and debate whose better.the king of sports was truly the king.Nothing better!

One of my all time favorite horses. Was also a treat to hear Dave Johnson's much younger voice.

Thanks so much for this wonderful tribute to John Henry. Great job of covering his amazing career and the people who were there with him along the way. John Henry is truly one of the greatest racehorses to ever step foot onto the racetrack. Love John Henry 💕🌹

Freak of nature. Reminds me a little of Octagonal. But nothing could beat this horse for durability.

I was at Santa Anita with my dad. I hit the early double for about $20. I waited 4 races and bet $2 on Pat V on a 40-1 shot. Pat took him wire to wire. I was up $100. I asked my dad who would win the next race and he said, "Probably John Henry." I bet the hundred on him at 8-5. He took the lead from the gate and led by a neck throughout. Every horse challenged him but no one could get closer than that neck. Pincay up. My $2 parlayed into $260.

Back in NY for my mom's funeral ( from Ca) John beat 41/1 Peat Moss and everyone in the room was jumping up and hugging because I had talked them all in to betting on the race (Uncle Jack ran down to bookie at the Drugstore....and it was on TV...1981.....John Henry had just beat my 44/1 shot in the 1st Million...thought the Bart held on...damn....couldn't beat that guy...amazing competitor

I thought that bookies were illegal in the States. Or was that only during the prohibition.

I believe that is the race where Jimmy the Greek was doing a rundown of the field and when he got to John Henry he said that he made a futile trip . He also said Pete Moss didn’t stand a chance. After the race it seems no one could find Jimmy, he high tailed it back to Vegas .

Sometimes, gelding a horse helps them quiet down, be easier and safer to handle, and gets their mind a little more on business, proving their ability. Big problem with gelding, it's irreversible and takes the proven horse out of the gene pool.

Was that the trainer that said horse's aren't very intelligent animals, early on in this interview, they are smarter than you, and have bigger teeth, Rich

The stewards robbed Perrault in the '82 Big 'Cap. I guess they figured they'd have a riot on their hands if they didn't award it to the fan favorite; there was huge crowd at Santa Anita despite the fact it had rained all day. They damned-near had a riot anyway: I was under the grandstand watching the race and aftermath on a monitor mounted high up on a wall. When they took Perrault down somebody threw a beer bottle through that monitor screen.

There are replays of this race head on. There is no question that Perrault interfered with JH... twice. And not just by a little bit

Yea,mcAnally also train those filly's paseana and bayakoa,to beat the best those year's, he also train a horse with short tail more ugly than john henry, he's wife spend only 1'500 dollars and make that year into Kentucky derby as the third favorite 7/2 but search how was the vetenerian behind he's race horses, same one was behind champion ( Tiznow 2 times breders cup classic) pure drugs since 1980
