All of the main players in this are based off real people, Toronaga is based off of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who was an incredibly intelligent and skilled warrior, as well as one of Japan’s most important figures in history. It’s very interesting to look into, most of this show is all based on real events that went down.

Hatomoto translates to Banner Bearer, basically it is a vassal that stands next to the clan leader under his banner in time of war, not as high as the top general but higher than most everyone else

Buntaro showed a moment where he seemed to hesitate and look sad. But it was just a flash and didn't last. He jumped up and turned around and fought. That look on his face and Mariko's look was meant to show they did care about each other but never showed it. It didn't make him look weak, just human, cause even the Japanese don't want to have to die.

Hatamoto is similar to Senior Military Officer. It doesn't make you a noble or give you land but it does mean you can command troops, be included in battle plan meetings, and have direct conversations with the Emperor/Shogun.

I highly doubt Mariko's husband escaped death. Samurais, in feudal Japan, lived through the bushido philosophy where they were expected to not fear death and to die for valor. If her samurai husband really did escape his "final" fight, then he'd have broken several bushido codes: committing deception to his master and bringing dishonor & shame to his family. He would have been highly expected to commit seppuku in the end.

The Regents aren't trying to do anything to the heir, and he isn't hidden from them, he lives in the palace in Osaka under Ishido's protection. The story of Shogun is really like watching the Star Wars prequels, but from Palpatine's point of view with the Jedi council as bad guys. I know its hard to see it like that, but its what it is both in the fictionalized story and in the real history its based on. The guy who led Japan before the Taiko was Goroda, and it was Toranaga who arranged for him to be killed. He then went to war in the chaos that followed, primarily fighting one of Goroda's main generals. That guy made peace with Toranaga, and became the Taiko after granting a whole bunch of land and shit to Toranaga. On his deathbed he offers to make Toranaga the sole regent knowing that Toranaga will refuse. Then he reveals the real deal, which is this council of regents thing, with Ishido as the caretaker of Osaka...because he knows that Ishido is absolutely loyal to both Lady Ochiba and the heir himself, and will die to protect them. He also makes sure that the council is made up of 5 people who can never agree: The richest man in Japan whose only interest is luxury and opulence, a Christian lord with leprosy that nobody would ever follow, another Christian lord who is just a mercenary that nobody would ever trust, a skilled bureaucrat serving as caretaker of the capital who has little in the way of military skills and who everyone just considers a clerk, and the most dangerous man in Japan....who is so dangerous that he will keep the other four regents united against him. The idea was that the 5 of them would simply disagree and keep each other in check until the day the heir became old enough to rule. The problem was that Toranaga started making moves to consolidate his power and increase his military forces and resources and that made everyone else nervous, so Ishido tried to use some bureaucratic nonsense to force him to commit seppuku. As far as what Toyotomi (the Taiko) wanted, Ishida (Ishido) and the others are the, "good guys," but we know that Tokugawa (Toranaga) goes on to found what we now think of as modern Japan, so from that point of view, he's the, "good guy." Its all a matter of perspective.

The show is so good. I like the weekly drop but if they dropped the entire season I would loved that. Or even 4-2-2.

Shogun is fiction, but it is based on real Japanese people that changed Japanese history. Toranaga is based on Tokugawa Ieyasu that was one of the three Great Unifiers of Japan.

Yabushige's name in the book was just Yabu, so you can call him that for short if it's easier to remember. I'm trying to figure out why they changed his name at all.
