John Kavanagh returns to Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show to recap Conor McGregor’s loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 257 and discuss what is next. Kavanagh says that (6:30) they prepared to defend leg kicks during training camp, but were not expecting the damage they caused. (14:45) Kavanagh addresses comments he made to Ariel in their pre-fight interview and the tweaks they’ll look to make moving forward. (20:00) He then says that McGregor would like a trilogy fight with Poirier before summer for the lightweight title.

@@mrqas2000 He's changed his stance and style from his karate/taekwondo stance and light on his feet sliding in and out, outside fighting picking his shots and throwing kicks to boxing orientated, front leg heavy stance and strategy, keeping his hands up instead of in front of him like in his best fights and focusing more on fighting in the pocket and boxing over his flashy, movement orientated style in the old days of Conor. This is because he's more invested in a boxing-type style as he was half training boxing ready for the manny fight and his training camp is also more boxing orientated. So while he's in the best shape and had his "best camp", his strategy was completely different and I'd argue his previous style would of been more effective against someone like Poirier, as if he was fighting on the outside and picking shots like he used to his leg wouldnt be there as much and he wouldnt of been so heavy on it when he did get caught. If you disagree you should watch his fights in 2014-2016 and compare it to how he fights today. Completely different style....

EXACTLY. Look back at his initial UFC run. He threw Wayyy more kicks and he was much more nimble with that karate style movement. He doesn’t have to go back to that, but he threw no teeps, no real distance management kicks like he used to. He honestly thought he could just outbox Dustin in the pocket. He overestimated his power and underestimated Dustin’s chin at 155. He caught Dustin at 145 6 years ago and for some reason, felt like he was going to rock his world the same way. Obviously, he hasn’t paid attention to how durable Dustin’s chin has been since he moved up to 155 after that fight. I did think he rocked him with that cross/shovel hook combo but that’s the ONLY time he even seemed to bother Dustin. And he landed at least 5 of his “money” shots. He needs to go back to fluid all-around striking and not boxing in the pocket.

Conor needs to switch his team asap! I honestly don't remember a time when conors team/corner ever gave him good honest feedback after a round. It's just usually praise. After the first round not a single advice about the calf kicks. They're accustomed to being yes men given his fame and personality in my humble opinion.

Most corne men talk the fighters up in between rounds. You don't want to dicourage a fighter during a fight. They start to feel they will lose. They had to make him feel like he would win during the fight. But yes, I agree he needs some other ppl that will be brutally honest if Conor wants to seriously fight again.

I would like to see him put in a year with one of the top global teams like att/aka/tristar and see if that makes a difference. Nothing against the irish lads and admire the loyalty but just cant help but feel he would benefit from world class training and daily sparing with world class martial artists. Feel hes missing a trick there big time.
