Patrick Dennis' witty 1955‚ best-seller about a boy and his‚ larger-than- life‚ socialite aunt became a Broadway smash when adapted by Jerome Roberts and Robert E. Lee with Rosalind Russell in the lead. Its director, Morton da Costa, made the leap to Hollywood when the play was filmed in 1958 and‚ became the highest-grosser of 1959. A musical version with Angela Lansbury opened on Broadway in 1966, which was filmed in 1974 with Lucille Ball in the lead.

Auntie Mame, the biggest box-office hit of 1958. Roz Russell was one of the very few actresses past fifty who wasn't starring in horror movies.

No mention of Joanna Barnes who almost walks away with the picture as Gloria Upson. "Ghastly, really ghastly!"

True, the trailer isn't much, but Auntie Mame had built up so much positive buzz, the movie couldn't miss. Happily, Comden and Green did a brilliant job adapting the book and the play for the screen and added many zany touches of their own. It all worked beautifully, and the movie made a fortune.

As a lover of - and believer in the magical spirit of Auntie Mame, I highly recommend a little book I got, entitled, But, Darling, I'm Your Auntie Mame ('natch), which tells the story of Mr. Dennis (Edward Everett Tanner), and the birth of Auntie Mame, in all her incarnations (yes, including the Vaseline-lensed 'musical' one with 'Ms. B.). If you can find it, pick it up. I, for one, watch Auntie Mame every year, but, only in late fall - early winter (part of the reason is I have a place where Auntie Mame's is; Beeckman Pl., and it just seems fitting). By the way; as any fan of the film knows, the actual interior designer Mame hired was Yul Ulu 😉 (2:10)

Patrick Dennis actually based the character of Mame on his own aunt, the free-spirited Marian Tanner.

I grew up not having any interest in "old fashioned" films. I was a child of the post civil rights, post feminism, post color-everything, post cartoon, etc world and so many of those films seemed to be steeped in outdated racial and sexual roles. Well, every now and then I would read a mention of "classics" like Auntie Mame or An Affair to Remember, and decided to finally check them out. BTW - love both those films. But wow, Auntie Mame really touched something in me. That character was my idol, I wish I'd discovered her as a child. What a phenomenal role model for everyone, especially females, because even though she does fall into some of the cliches of a spoiled, pampered female, ultimately she is a smart, independent, clever, intelligent and funny woman, fully in charge of her own life and chasing every drop of experience she can. I can only hope everyone sees this film, it's worth it (and for me, worth rewatching on a regular basis).

Doesn't John Landis do some research and rehearsing beforehand? He keeps repeating himself, talks in circles and knows less about the film than Google does?

My favorite gay joke is... A gay guy walks into a restaurant. He sees a guy he likes just about to sit down at the bar and goes up to him and says, "Hey there. Would you like me to push in your stool?"

This may be apocryphal, but 50 years ago there was an urban legend about the following graffiti on a men's room wall: First comment: My mother made me a homosexual. Second comment: If I supply the materials, will she make one for me?

I take back my comment of 10 months ago. John Landis isn't that good either. Not if he thinks it is such a great movie.. In 1958 it may have been, but now - strictly hambone as in overdone
@lemorab1
@lemorab1 6 лет назад
I agree with you in general. It also suffered from censorship in that era. And Rosalind Russell is an acquired taste that I never acquired, though I think this is the best thing she ever did. Some of her delivery is overdone and sometimes she is spot on. The Upson parents are grossly over acted, but Joanna Barnes as Gloria is pitch perfect. Peggy Cass gets tiresome fast, but Coral Browne is consistently brilliant. It's a mixed bag. I still enjoy watching it.
