Being a Blues musician myself, I can tell you the emotions and passion is there even if it's just one chord. Look at John Fogerty. He's got a few of those "one chorders". Sometimes simplicity is the key to brilliance.
Those blues riffs, notes and chord progressions are UN COPYRIGHTABLE, it's public folklore since ancient times, it's like the circle of 5ths in western music Back Style, it's all over the place. Do you remember Whiter Shade of Pale and it's resemblance with Back music, or Hotel California and that Jethro Tull song. I'm a composer, degree in Music Composition, and of course it's my humble opinión, don't intent It to be above others valid opinions. Salute
I've heered this from early on. I keepa comin back to it. It's the simple things in life folks. No hi tech no cell phones. Just someone sittin on a porch entertaining his neighbors and they a likely appreciate it.
From a chatroom I read "I knew JLH, At his crib he used to tell me "tickle the strings" It ain't the Guitar that sounds like Him, it's how you play it sparse, and with Soul. He had a 59 Epi Zephyr, that was his #1. and a lot of 335's, for Gigs. I worked with His Band briefly in 1976 and hung out with him from 1999-his passing in 2001. What a cool dude."
I was blessed enough to get to hang out with JLH in his living room with my pops watching the Dogers Vs Giants game as he strummed his guitar and talked about music in 1996 when I was 15 or 16 years old. What a gracious & kind human being. I grew up hearing his music playing around my house when I was a kid, and as I got older I came to truly appreciate his music as only someone with some mileage can. That was one of the best days of my life. So thankful his music endures.
Great video! I just bought an original 78 rpm record of this song at a flea market for 3 bucks, lol. Amazing that someone can sit on one chord for an entire song and still sound incredible.
Being WORLD FAMOUS on ONE CHORD takes GENIUS and TALENT. SOMETIMES THE "SIMPLE" THINGS ARE THE VERY BEST. "IT'S THAT STEADY RHYTHM AND BEAT" THAT GETS YA!!
I always loved when ZZ Top did this on the fandango album, didn't know it was a tribute to Hooker. I love surfing the tube. The education here is so fucking awsome.
John Lee Hooker playing the FIRST song he EVER recorded. NO matter where or when he performed it LIVE, it NEVER came out the SAME way. Yet, it's ALWAYS the same chord structure and the same style. I LOST it when I saw him play it with The Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton in Atlantic City on The Steel Wheels tour. It's my favorite concert memory!
