How do you love rap when rap doesn’t love you back? From Rico Nasty’s harassment from toxic Carti fans, to Saucy Santana's unapologetically femme aesthetics in a queerphobic industry, to the assault case that put Megan Thee Stallion’s entire image on trial, each episode of Louder Than A Riot - the second season of our investigative hip-hop podcast - unpacks the unspoken rules of rap that hold the entire culture back. Tap in to our first episode at n.pr/louder-season-2.
Aside from the fact that all of these performances are amazing... shout out to NPR for never having any advertisements on the videos... y'all are the real MVP

Gotta tell this story, it was the 4th of July 2014 and I was back home in Philly. They put on a free concert in the park before the fireworks and it was cold and rainy and everyone was miserable. 3 groups performed and they got out of there after 15 mins or 3 songs apiece. John Legend came out in the rain and proceeded to sing soaking wet for 45 mins and by the end of his concert everyone was up and dancing and singing along. I've been a fan ever since.
John Legend is such a refreshing and creative breeze in the stale music business. So much of the river of sublime tradition flows through him. I hear Nat King Cole, Sam Cook, Mahalia Jackson, Harry Belafonte, Marvin Gaye and so many other greats in him...classical, pop, jazz, blues...He sings, writes, plays...what a deep and wide fountain...
Yeah, it's so raw, which brings out the authentic beauty of the track. A song like that is better stripped down and not produced. Some of Legend's tracks suffer from overproduction, which isn't a fault of his. It's just the industry. Anyway, I loved this version so much. Watched it three times.
I want to live forever in a captured moment of John’s voice. Like trying to stop a wave from returning back to the ocean. Impossible. Just hold onto the memory.
Man those first few notes of Made to Love were amazing. Brought me back to his first album...blissful and memorizing vocals...pure talent and those keys! 😫😍
We are all witnessing a LEGEND! We should all be thankful that John Legend exists. NPR you guys should be very proud at what you have created, I cant say enough about tiny desk.
✨Pure heart✨Pure soul✨Pure gift✨Pure gold Thank you, John. The Love in your voice brings much needed Light to the planet.May you and Your Family Be Forever Blessed, Sweet Brother
The best thing to come out of Clark County Ohio ever!!! Sheer talent. Class. Thank you John Stevens for sharing your talent with us. Cheers from Park Layne!!!
"Made to Love" is hands down sounds the best - to me. I still find it funny some think he's autotuned, in an office, with a crowd, while he has so many vocal fluctuations in his music which sound amazing.
I just heard you sing that song for the first time and you are amazing thank you I am so sorry for all the pain in the world why cant we all LOVE no more fighting
I am so stunned by the intimacy NPr has created in this "tiny desk" set....my favorite artists sound even better to me when playing for this audience in this setting. T pain was great, Lianne LaHavas., Deqn Sue, Adele, Natalie Merchant, Sun Ra Arkestra (wow! peeled my wig), oh oh oh EDmar Castaneda !!!! how super special that was......
I couldn't believe it when John said he wrote a song with Fink... OMG! He is such an underrated songwriter... Maybe John will help him getting the views he deserves! These two together are awesome...
Don't get me wrong, and this is the first time I saw this clip. I love John any day, but there is no way he can ever come close to Fink's version of this song (it's called Move on me, not Move btw).
John Legend has sold millions of records, won nine Grammys, collaborated with many of the biggest stars in music (Jay-Z, Kanye West, Alicia Keys, The Roots, et al), and achieved the kind of statesmanlike musical-ambassador status usually afforded to artists twice his age. He is, in short, the sort of star who doesn't usually perform behind desks in offices. #johnlegend
Sorry, But you must be new. It is a real HONOR to be invited to do the NPR Tiny Desk concert and if you get on here, it will make you famous if you werent , already, hands down. NPR Tiny Desk is the Creme de la Creme of promotion and love for REAL music. Have you not seen the catalog of performers ? Wilco? The Pixies? Robert Cray? The Avett Brothers? Dave Matthews? Yo Yo Ma? Natalie Merchant? There are too many to bring up !sorry, dear one. He is EXACTLY the kind of person that sits at a desk and sings.
@@jenniferrbishop1 Hey Jennifer, what Marcus wrote is literally the description attached to this video which he copied and paste... yeah. "the sort of star who doesn't usually perform behind desks..." The key word here is "usually". Which means, he would never do this but for Tiny Desk. Which means this comments means the contrary of what you thought. Sorry.
One of the best voices in popular music hands down. "All of Me" is one of the best love songs ever written. Congrats to John and Chrissy on the birth of their baby girl!
the voice crack at 12:50 is why I love live music so much. It reminds us that behind all the watered down crap we hear on the radio that's polished to perfection there is still a human behind the music. Hearing absolute masters make mistakes reminds me that we are all mortals and nothing should be as perfect as the fake world we live in wants us to believe it is.
Yes, John Legend. A gift to all of us. His phrasing....oh, my. I am reminded of the pianist Bill Evans. I hear the same excellence listening to John sing. The perfect turn of a melody. Egad, he's just so good.
1. John L is a very handsome man. 2. He's got a beautiful voice. 3. And he's got some serious piano skills. Edit: Plus, John seems like he's a really nice guy. Wow, talk about having it all? ( ^ _ ^ )
you were the one who set me free dear john, your music and your voice is magical, keep singing,as i do love and bless ,,ummmahhhhhh ,i give all of me dear ,all of me belongs to you
So nobody’s gunna talk About John’s poreless and seemingly flawless complexion? Thought I just clicked on a glossier ad... Skin and vocal dexterity is like butta😩✨ HOW SWAY?!
His voice an Imagine and when he start playing those 🔥🔥🔥key's 🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎶🎶🎶🎹🎹🎹🎶🎶🎵🔥🔥🔥🔥☔❤❤❤❤❤WOW I could listen to him all DAY!!!!it just take you into deep deep thought God really truly bless his vocals the man is bad(Good) (Excellent AMAZING 🎹🎶🎤🎼🎹!!!!!)💜💜💜💜💜
This, People...THIS!!!! Look into the audience. Just Look at the diversity of the crowd. All the walks of life represented. No one cares about the religious beliefs of the person standing beside them. No social status hierarchy, not a care in the world for 15 minutes. Just humans, being human. Great music can move mountains, great musicians touch your soul. John Legend is one of those people that can do both.
A Masterpiece.John’s sultry voice and heartfelt lyrics often move me to tears, but if I didn’t know better he seems heartbroken during his performance!🤔
He almost seems sad. His voice is like a sip of scotch, exuding a smokey resonance reminiscent of the draw from a cuban cigar maybe? He just sounds so good.
