Yoko and Sean have really shown how a boxset should be done. It’s more than just twiddling a few knobs and faders, they are treating it like a labour of love. Even the videos they have released to accompany this have been so beautifully done. I get the feeling the money this will make is definitely not their main concern, something I never feel with other boxsets.
I’m looking forward to this I love johns voice he sings from the heart I’m with every word he sings thanks for a wonderful talk interesting facts and s lovely gift from yoko and Sean the package looks great 🙏
Totally agree with you, John. This too is my favourite solo Beatles album. Loved it since I bought the vinyl when I was 17. Searingly honest, raw and utterly beautiful ❤
You are very lucky to be appreciated by Yoko and Sean in that way...obviously think very highly of you...The booklet really does look beautifully produced.
This is awesome box set, and it was very kind of Yoko and Sean to send it to you. And l loved your review and all the background information really made it come to life for me. I'm going to listen to remaster version on Apple Music today, It's been to long since I gave this a listen. Thanks for sharing John.
Brilliant John, as usual you can be relied on to really nail it and say the things that some of us wish we'd thought to say. Great job, really glad you also got sent a copy from Sean and Yoko.
Glad to see that you got an advance copy, John. It's been fun seeing the set from everyone who got it early, as well as hearing thoughts about it. Yoko and Sean deserve a lot of kudos for marketing this set by giving some of the most well known fan channels a review copy. The evolution mixes are what I'm most looking forward to hearing. As I type, my copy is out for delivery. I can't wait to dive in!
You are like a fan in your favorite artists candy store. I like how happy you are to share this with us. And I'm happy that Yoko and Sean sent that to you. When I got the album as a teen, around 1976, I played Mother over and over just to hear John's voice. And then Isolation and Love. On an other album Yoko had remastered, Mother was excellent remastered. I'm sure that I will love this set like you, but you're the ultimate fan reviewer. You deserve the best from the best. Thanks to Yoko and Sean and thank you John for such a great review.
Nice review! After all it is the greatest solo lp ever! Written in the 1st person. Honest & raw! Very typical from John. You don't have 2 wonder when it comes 2 John. In my 20s when it came out. Always felt the cover hurt record sales. There was no mention at the time of who it was. Walked right by it when it was released. It's a masterpiece. Good stuff Heaton
Hi John, Exquisite review of a magnificent expression by any artist. LENNON is my favorite artist. So happy that you received this beautiful feast of a box set. Cannot wait to get mine. God bless, keep well and long live LENNON Tino
Thanks for the review Johns, as informative as ever. Paul Hicks is the son of Tony Hicks of the Hollies. I was amazed you thought Hollies founder Graham Nash was American John! A Salford Lad like Alan Clarke One of John's 3 best albums.I look forward to his other releases getting the same box set treatment
Hi John, great review! Have you heard the excellent podcast Producing The Beatles? The most recent episode is on Love and shows the evolution very well.
The thing with this great album is that you don’t really have to be a Beatles fan to enjoy it, this is a one off solo album and totally stands on its own. But ask me next week and I’ll say the same about ATMP !
Something I've just accidentally found playing the John and Yoko albums together. Ringo asking if Phil's putting echo on his cymbals is the end of matchbox on the John jam disc, and the start of Why (extended version) on Yoko Plastic Ono Band. So they might have played Matchbox before a take of that Yoko song. I love boring people with useless bits of info.
Made my purchase Feb 2023. My third “Beatles” super deluxe CD boxset after “Let it Be” & “Abby Road”. This may be my favourite out of the three. There is something special about this boxset.
Great stuff John pleases has Punch for you great package for me have to admit quite happy with 1st pressing which I still have from years ago n my cassette indeed it’s a powerful album by John and up there with the best no doubt
That packaging looks sumptuous. I wonder whether that Sycamore Tree is still standing and recognisable in the Tittenhurst grounds. The whole 6 CD's are generously available on I tunes, so I've been listening through. A lot to take in!! Ironic, but for me the track that's really grabbed me is the Instant Karma session with George!
Brilliant review John. Other box sets pale in comparison to the recent John Lennon sets... Like you I hope they continue issuing them to the same high standard. Cheers
Great video John. Playing catch up collecting the Beatles and solo releases of this year and finally got a copy of this set today. Brilliant. Loving it.
Although I have enjoyed Paul’s box sets for the most part, John’s have been more thorough and creative in terms of the unreleased tracks and overall presentation. If they continue with the rest of John’s studio albums, we have a lot to look forward to. Thank you for your excellent review. Looking forward to the “Love” evolution tracks you mentioned.
thx for this & the specs on this new 'release!' how awesome. thinking of getting it for my sister for a gift. newbie, here--this was the LP i 'discovered' which turned me back on to john lennon & of course yoko ono. which track is a favourite?? i don't know, it's so hard to say. i love love but the 'remember' track is awefully slow, i remember mixing that in for somebody & had to change the bpm. these songs are so amazing. thank you!! i hope i can find this online to buy, i would want the cd version & i think it looks incredible . . .
HEY CONGRATS.....You must of started wondering where your copy was!.......especially after 'It's a Beatleful Life' got her copy!!....YOU ARE NOW A SLAVE TO SEAN AND YOKO....to get your STINYC copy....lol, But its good that you could do your review without the pressure that Dixon and Mayo had....NERVOUS BREAKDOWN HAHA....Well done and I GOT A SHOUT!! YEAAAAH
I am a Catholic but I still revere this album. Interestingly, it has few lighter moments that Lennon so often exhibited in staples such as “The Ballad of John and Yoko”, but it is a masterpiece, and all the more poignant for it.
To me, this amount of material is overkill for a raw and "unpolished" album like Plastic Ono Band. Good album though. I'm so glad people enjoy these deep dives into massive box sets like this, but unless there are some very different arrangements and alternate versions that are obviously unique from the finished tracks, I only need one outtake of each song from the original album (the best outtake, whatever they deem it to be). Other than that, I'll enjoy streaming some of the other outtakes and mixes here and there. Looking forward to a Walls & Bridges box for some demos and stripped back versions of those songs which had thicker more complex production. I think a box as extensive as this is more suitable for that album if I'm going to nit-pick :)
It is. I believe (But could be misremembering) that the box-book is more about everything to do with the album itself while the book-book is more about where J&Y were at the time (Like the Primal Scream Therapy) and their lives and everything. I think Andrew Dixon was the one I heard it from, so try and find that
John. Friendly warning. You will get a copyright infringement on your tee shirt. Please blank it or put some kind of blur. You don’t want to be sued for copyright infringement or violation.
Was never crazy about that album. The music is a bit stiff and the songs aren’t that good. Is it a brutally honest musical exorcism ? Yes. However as a musical listening experience I find it lacking.
I typically enjoy your videos, but this one bothered me. Yoko and Sean send you this nice gift of John's album and you review it while wearing a shirt that has all the former Beatles except John on it. What were you thinking?!
