John said that he really liked Here There and Every where which was completely by Paul. Paul said it was the only compliment John ever gave him about one of his songs.
I have heard this before, but I am sure John has complimented many McCartney songs before their split up.There are many interviews and articles where he did. Paul may have meant this is the only compliment he has made about one of his songs since the split up.
While Paul was writing "Hey Jude", the line "the moment you need is on your shoulder", Paul was going to throw it out. John told him that was the best line in the song. They worked well together. John and Paul were honest with each other. If they didn't like something in a song, they told each other. That's why they were brilliant.
@@pandaman1968 No, after Revolver came out, and they went on vacation and heard the album together again, John remarked as they left the room that Paul's songs were better than his, which floored Paul. Paul told the story in an interview.
@@StephenDoty84 Before Revolver, John's songs were generally better: Ticket to Ride, Help, In My Life, I Feel Fine, This Boy, etc. Paul improved, and on Rubber Soul his and John's were close to equal. From Revolver to early 1969, Paul's songs were better: For No One, Here There and Everywhere, She's Leaving Home, Hey Jude, etc. On Abbey Road, George's two songs were the best.
@@Freedom2111 Yeah, interesting rotation, and George emerged after the band's break-up the strongest with Apple's biggest radio-play song ever, "My Sweet Lord.'
Yeah I think John was self-aware of his reputation to give different answers and sometimes contradict himself. I've heard him joke about it on an interview.
John Lennon was a singer, song writer, and performer. He was not a music critic. Some of the songs he did that he had low, or little regard for are some of my favorites. Songs like: Run For Your Life, And Your Bird Can Sing, and Hey Bulldog. Beatle songs that have a great, tight sound, and great singing parts, great backing vocals. Those are some of my favorites.
When you seem to effortlessly write very good to great song after song, after song, after song, one loses perspective. Any group now would love to have And Your Bird Can Sing or She Said She Said. Even if they had no meaning to John Lennon.
"Dear Prudence", "Revolution", "Sexy Sadie". John, no list of your best Beatles' songs is complete without these 3 songs, IMO. Come to think of it, Lennon has dozens of songs which can be placed on a list of his best Beatles' songs. The Beatles are simply the best.
I grew up with the Beatles, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, Kinks and others. Out of all those I listed, I like the Beatles the best as you never knew what you were going to get with new album that came out. That is not to denigrate the other bands, I loved their music as well. 😀
@@prschuster It may be their greatest rock song and somehow it has become forgotten to most. I can see why Lennon was getting tired of the Beatles in the late 60's because he was being marginalized. It would drive me crazy to have songs like this treated as nothing while putting out Hello, Goodbye as the big single.
John's wish to redo songs is not unusual. Actors, directors, musicians and artists are extremely critical of their efforts. Thankfully, this perfectionist attitude didn't prevail and we have complete songs to admire.
It’s Only Love is one of John’s most beautiful melodies and he hated it simply because of its lyrics because he was on a phase when he was sick of writing love songs.
I can understand why he chose these songs as his better ones. They are favorites of mine as well. I've heard him speak before about several of them. He tried so hard to express what he was really feeling in these songs, because he thought that's what true artists do. He didn't want to be just a poppy rock singer putting out lyrics that were only good for carrying a dance tune along. I'm sure that most of his fans understood this or felt it whether they knew it or not. That's why he was so beloved by his audience. Because they felt the same things within themselves and John gave voice to them.
George Martin recalled having dinner with John and Yoko at the Dakota. John said he’d do all the songs differently if he could do them over. Martin asked “even Strawberry Fields?” And John said “especially Strawberry Fields”.
John & Paul complemented d each other to produce songs & they are all gems. It's hard to pick the 5 best of the Beatles featuring either in the lead vocals because George & Ringo contributed their parts often overlooked by critics!
@@thelakeman5207 I fancy these at the moment: Not a second time, Martha my Dear, Hello Goodbye, Hard day's night, Help, She said she said, And your bird can sing.
I just couldn¨t have one favorite Beatles song or saying which one is the best. In fact, I don´t believe there is the best song. I love most of them. Every song has its moment depending on my state of mind.
When John recorded In My Life in 1965, he told Pete Shotton that the song was about Pete and his other close friend Stuart Sutcliffe who died in '62. He also confided that In My Life is the only song that came his heart. I was surprised that two early songs before Rubber Soul were amongst his favourites. John said in an interview he was sick of writing love songs, but that's what EMI wanted. I can't remember if it was on the Anthology or Compleat Beatles DVD.
I’m a huge fan of the Revolver period, Rain, Only sleeping, Doctor Robert, She Said she said and of course Tomorrow Never Knows, which I think it’s extraordinary
He was off in 1970 and Jann was a malignant creature. John was still really raw in 1970. He changed his mind about a lot of things. He was very angry during this interview and I don’t put so much stock in it.
There are so many, by just John alone. Tomorrow Never Knows, Rain, Julia, A Day in the Life, Give Peace a Chance. Then post-Beatles classics such as God, Crippled Inside, Jealous Guy, Instant Karma, Imagine. What's humorous is the amount of sanctimonious hypocrites still outraged by the messages from these songs all these years later. Defiance that reverberates through history.
Apparently, over dinner at the Dacota Building, during which he reminisced with guest George Martin, John stated he was unhappy with all the recordings he made at Abbey Road
Its impossible to list a favorite Beatles song. Help is probably my favorite from this list. Unlike John, I am more moved by the music than the lyrics. Which is probably why I liked Paul and Wings so much.
My top 5 are ones you wouldn't find on anyone's list (not all together): All My Loving, I Want to Hold Your Hand, I'm happy Just to Dance With You, She Loves You, The Sun King
My top 6 Lennon Beatle compositions: 6. All You Need Is Love 5. In My Life 4. Revolution 3. Dig A Pony 2. Dear Prudence. 1. I Am The Walrus. Honorable Mention: I Want You (She's So Heavy), Come Together and Tomorrow Never Knows!!! We all I could go on & on!!!
I am French so I don't care a lot about the lyrics, Girl for me is perfect in the melody and the chord progression, musically for me it's a very good and emotional song, like Michelle for example
If you think The Beatles are among the best bands in the history, you couldn't be more wrong. The Fab Four are the greatest band that ever was and will be.
@@verga8550 I forgot about those untalented wannabes. If you haven't already, watch The Analogues - Sgt Pepper's Concert. The Analogues are the best Beatles tribute band.
The List of John Lennon's great songs goes to triple digits. Interesting to know five songs he cared for, though, as he was a noxiously tough critic on himself. #9 Dream happens to be my favorite Lennon masterpiece, a solo effort.
John could write 10 songs in just one hour walking around Twickingham studios- about a cut on his finger, or something else. And, his list of favorite songs could also change by the hour. I wouldn't put too much into this video
The thing about the Beatles more than any other group is that by listing your top tunes, anyone can get a profile of your personality by the tunes you like or hate due to the extremely varied styles of music put out by the group. Kind of like social media hookup sites only this way is much less time consuming. How much can you tell about that person by checking out their top ten? A lot
It's kind of amazing how many good songs they had that he didn't even mention classics like She Loves You, In My Life, and A Day In The Life and All You Need As Love
I just wanted to say that I have to start a long time ago always knew that Yoko Ono destroyed the Beatles and destroys John's way of music and took him in a different direction down politics and all other stuff all kinds his music was political
The only song on this list that I really liked was Across The Universe. I liked the Hard Days Night Soundtrack better than Help! Not crazy about that song If I Fell and And I Love Her were my favorite early Beatles songs along with PS I Love You
In My Life I am the Walrus Norwegian Wood Across the Universe A Day in the Life Strawberry Fields Forever All you Need is Love Dear Prudence Tomorrow never knows Help Rain Ticket to Ride Happiness is a Warm Gun Julia Come Together Because
I can’t give a like and subscribe until this channel gets a reader who knows how to properly pronounce Beatles-related things. Only Ringo is allowed to do malapropisms and bad pronunciation.
Anyone who knows rock will know the interviewer from Rolling Stone is Jann (pronounced “YANN”)Wenner (not Venner.) And it’s Maharishi NOT Marashi. So tired of RU-vid videos where the writer and or narrator misspells the names or pronounces them incorrectly. It doesn’t take that much effort to get them right and it undercuts the credibility of the video.
Yup, the dewde's ignorant pronouncements on a number of things was pathetically annoying...almost turned it off a couple of time, eg "Venner" & when he called Guru Dev something like 'Marishi's(sic) boss', lol. Are our expectations of younger gen too high? They need to stop vaping...at least to reduce glass splinters in the brain. Sheesh. 🙌👶🙏🏿
John would say today all the songs of peace and love seemed to have had little to no effect given the state of affairs in the world today. Maybe we should have sang about hate and war then maybe the wolrd would be a peaceful now.
My top five are substantially different, In order: 1.) Hey Bulldog 2.) And Your Bird Can Sing 3.) Tomorrow Never Knows 4.) A Day in the Life 5.) I'm So Tired Honorable Mentions: 1.) Because 2.) Julia 3.) I'm Only Sleeping Link to Beatles boot on my channel: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d4t1FRowqeY.html
Always knew that John Lennon was a damn good writer when he would sing a song that was drawn me close and feel the song Paul McCartney and social but not as much as John without John Lennon I don't think the Beatles would have gone nowhere but thanks to the contributions of Paul and George and Ringo but when he met Yoko Ono his vision of music just went down the other way if he would have stood like he was before and never meeting Yoko Ono he probably would have never got into that political he would have still been writing great songs
I'd have to agree with the other guy. I think imagine was kind of unique and pretty good. What do you think comparing that with a pre 1967 song? What other group had all 4 members write a number song with the Beatles or post Beatles? Yep, even Ringo with some help from George
I notice you didn't mention George who was an unrecognized genius at that time. After the Beatles broke up, George showed everyone what he was capable of.
My top ten Lennon songs in any order are; Imagine, A Day in the Life, Hey Bulldog, Accross the Universe, Girl, Help, Stawberry Fields, Norwegian Wood, In my Life, Give Peace a Chance and one extra; Cold Turkey. My list is Lennon entire Songs recordings not just with the Beatles! And maybe as the BEST; I'm the Walrus!!
Fun fact is that he rated his music in the White Album as the best he had ever done. I think he referred to Dear Prudence, Happiness is a warm gun, Yer Blues, Julia, Sexy Sadie and Revolution mainly, but also Glass onion and the Monkey song.
Paul introduced George to John. John had the right of first refusal. John had a band before Paul approached him. Paul didn't have a band. George Martin had The Beatles dump Pete Best. Martin approved Ringo. The notion that Paul put the band together isn't accurate.
Don't you mean Jann Wenner? Also, it's pronounced "Yahn Wenner", not "Jan Venner". He's hugely famous. He founded and remains the editor of Rolling Stone.
Yeah and he was a malignant leech who hated Paul. I can stand Jann. At the end of his life John grew to hate him. He sent him a picture of himself and Paul together in 1974 and wrote on the Polaroid “HOW DO YOU SLEEP?”
ONE of Johns problems was, he would change his opinion on most issues, every other day; possibly according to the amount of crap he had swallowed or smoked. It must have been tough, living with him.
Sarcastically speaking: There must be some truth to Paul McCartney having helped with the music/melody of 'Across The Universe'...note how John says the lyrics stand alone without the melody. end of sarcasm. But then again he praised 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' which he admits he wrote with Paul.
"Girl" could not have been written about Yoko Ono as it was released on Rubber Soul in December 1965, having been the last song recorded months earlier for that album, and John did not meet Yoko Ono unto the summer or 1966.
Actually George rattled the cage REAL HARD to get Pete Best out & Ringo in as a) Best wasn't such a great drummer (he played 'one TWO, three FOUR' only...Ringo, on the other hand, is the world's best song drummer).
Norwegian Wood my fave melody next to Dear Prudence. Hide your Love Away and One after 909 ain't bad neither. All you Need is Love equals Hey Jude anyday of the week, but the masses are ungrateful. Mush heads.
Strawberry is thee hardest rearranged song ever written n history alongside with walrus,those2 songs r unreal, walrus sounds harder2copy than Strawberry in my mind but I think it's,in my life+something,thats#2,+#3songs of them, not sure of the order of those2 it could be either of them that gets2+3,what John's favorite was u had2think he knew his music taste better
He was asked to name His favorite Beatles' songs, i.e., the one's that he, John, wrote. The title of the vid and narrative is a bit deceiving, I suppose.
John and Paul wrote "I Want to Hold Your Hand" (which is on John's list) together in the basement of Jane Asher's house in London. She was Paul's girlfriend at the time.
If I had to list my 5 favorite Beatle's songs, Paul may not make the list. While I love a lot of Paul's songs, Lennon's best have always been my favorite. And Paul might have trouble beating some of George's like Something and Here Comes the Sun. My favorite Paul song is probably Eleanor Rigby, but probably wouldn't make my top 5.
He didn't wite it but nothing is better than twist and shout unless it's A Day I n The Life. BTW the best Paul song was A taste of Honey which he also did notwrite. The best Beatle song wrong was by George and that was While My Guitar gentle weeps
