00:00 John Lobb Paris Shoe Introduction
In the world of classic men’s shoes, one of the most prestigious house names is John Lobb Paris. With their long and decorated history, are the ready-to-wear shoes offered today still live up to their name?
00:56 The History of John Lobb
John Lobb was a Cornish farmboy who tried to become a shoemaker in London but was turned away. Subsequently, he traveled to Australia following the gold rush, and it wasn’t until then that he established himself as a respected shoemaker and bootmaker. His most famous invention was probably the hollow heel, which allowed the wearer to store gold in the heel in a way that would be inconspicuous.
02:26 What's in a Name? Lobb Ltd. vs. Lobb Paris
05:52 Construction of John Lobb Paris Shoes
They do provide a few snippets of actual manufacturing video on their site and based on that, it looks very much in line with other high-end makers from Northampton. But, it’s not enough to make a definitive judgment. There are quite a few pictures, but they’re often part of a collage, so it’s hard to recognize the details in them.
10:52 A Closer Look at Styling Details
14:29 Unboxing Impressions
17:37 Are John Loob RTW Shoes Worth It?
Yes, but...
Yes, they’re worth it only if you want the John Lobb brand name and you cannot afford the bespoke shoes. Maybe you also don’t want to wait for a pair of bespoke shoes, or you can’t travel, or you just want to buy exactly what you can see and get, and you want that prestigious John Lobb name.
No, because...
John Lobb ready-to-wear shoe is definitely not worth your money if you care about the bang for your buck because they’re very expensive for what you get.
If you want a shoe with great finesse that has bespoke-inspired details. Even if you love their last shape the way I do, I believe that you could find a very similar last shape or, sometimes, maybe even more attractive last shape from other high-end makers for less money.

I picked up my JL Prestige line black cap-toe oxfords for a fraction of what they retail for, through being shelf models, the prestige line with the seamless back is one of those details I have never seen on other RTW shoes and find them superior in many ways to my G&G's and Edward green's, however they're not very far off.

I'm 56 and have always had very wide feet, now requiring purchase from specialty builders, and I have a warning for your younger viewers; prioritize your feet. If you have to budget on your wardrobe, don't skimp on your footwear. Quality, well made, professionally fitted shoes will prevent problems later in life, and if you have ANY size, shape, or leg irregularities, should be thought of as a necessity on the same level as corrected vision and dental care. Before you spend one hour in discomfort due to wearing those ill-fitting but ultra spec kicks you picked up for spit on the mark down rack, consider the actual loss of income, status, and position a week on your back due to something like turf toe or plantar fasciitis can cause at age 40. It gets worse from there; even with surgery, most foot debilities will have to be thought of as chronic, recurring situations- very unpredictable ones at that.

@@blackMZworld I mean you can say the same about a Rolex if that's your thing, but I'd rather get a better watch than an overpriced rolex.
@blackMZworld
@blackMZworld 3 года назад
@@Aggnog except that Rolex is not to be opposed to John Lobb. Rolex is Gucci among watches, an expensive fashion brand, nothing else. John Lobb is a shoemaker of high-quality shoes. I know you want to believe in Raphael's (quite negative) review simply because you cannot afford a pair of John Lobbs. However, you are not even ware of the fact that Raphael applies criteria in his review that are not applicable to a "classic" British shoe like a fiddle waist or fancy lasts, colours, and patinas (Gaziano & Girling is not a classic brand at all, btw). The primus of British clothing style is understatement. This is perfectly embodied by John Lobb. As for the quality, John Lobb shoes are perfectly Ok, they are of the same quality level as Crockett & Jones. So, it will take you quite an effort to wear them to death. As for the price, a pair of Crockett & Jones shoes costs a half of what's the price of a John Lobb pair. It's up to you to choose between these brands. Or you can go to a local shoemaker as Raphael suggest. But desperately try to believe in bad quality of John Lobb shoes is simply ridiculous as it has nothing to do with the reality. And yes, it's a very particular feeling if you go along a street wearing a pair of simply looking sandals, but you are the only one who knows they are from John Lobb. You basically wear them for yourself, not for others.

Hello, I just discovered your channel, it's very interesting and seems objective. Thank you for this overview of John Lobb models that I tended to put a little above everything else, if only because of the price positioning. I completely agree with you about shapes, luxury brands generally offer several to suit different morphologies (apart from made-to-measure, of course). I have to admit that the John Lobb ready-to-wear range has a number of coarse details. What shocked me most: the brand doesn't even offer half sizes Hello, Hello, I just discovered your channel, it's very interesting and seems objective. I have to admit that the John Lobb ready-to-wear range has a number of coarse details. What shocked me most: the brand doesn't even offer half sizes ! All this seems to illustrate that the brand is over-priced because of its prestigious origins, a bit like when Boss in its day expanded into the mass market, the basic quality was no longer assured and the seams didn't hold. Well, that's not the case here, but thanks to you we can see that lesser-known and slightly less expensive brands are doing better in this respect. Thanks for clarifying things for me. ❤

Hi, Raphael and team. Gosford Park (a film set in a 1930s English country house) recently arrived on Netflix. I noticed that you had a short review on the film from all the way back in 2011 (!) but you omitted to discuss the outfits worn by Ryan Phillippe’s character Henry Denton after his outing as a Hollywood actor. I wonder if you might revisit the production and take a look at these wonderful menswear items. If you could find ready-to-wear garments for sale so that we could re-create these outfits that would be even better. Many thanks. Your work is very much appreciated.

Not sure if you heard of the brand Cobbler's Union. They're an Atlanta brand that does the fiddle back bottom on their rtw shoes for around the same price as Carmina.

I have a pair of Church’s brogues and a pair of monk strap Edward Green’s in addition to some prestige John Lobb monk strap shoes - I sincerely mean this when I say that the quality of leather, the comfort of the shoe and the contruction overall is better on the JL’s than the Churchs or Edward Greens - yes the price the higher than both, but there’s something special about the JLs that I don’t feel in the other two big name British shoemakers.

i have many brands of bespoke shoes, but theJohn Lobb Paris make my foot feel better than a;y other bespoke shoe. The John Lobb Paris bespoke shoe makes my foot feel as if it is being held up by a cradle. The middle pary of the foot feels as if it is being held up! the feel almost like the shoe facilitates your lifting your foot off the ground.I have 10 of theirbespoke shoes. When I had them make me booys they actually consulted orthopedic people and put s brace on 1 side of the leg part of the boot. By the way, the John Lobb ready made heel is the best construction of multiple layers of real leather- the best construction of any heel

Looks more expensive than an Allen Edmonds?? Yeah, it better!! AE’s are fine shoes, but there’s no illusion of them being in the 4 figure threshold. Comparing to Carmina or Churches would have been more relative for that cap-toe Oxford

the fact they till charge about 500 quid for a pair of plastic sneakers just show its just branding and overpriced

I prefer my Crockett & Jones. I'll stick to them. Crockett & Jones is very expensive. I purchased two pairs of the Tetbury Chukka boot one in black and another pair in brown @ $650.00 a pop. The James Bond boot Daniel Craig wore in the opening of the movie SkyFall. Great boot looks very sharp. I'll stick with Crockett & Jones. I had purchased Crockett & Jones she tree's they come seperate also pricey too.

Just seen six pairs of John Lobbs for sale second hand in a charity shop for £85 per pair. Unfortunately, they were too slim fitting for my son.

If one divides how much you pay for a expensive shoe , by the days of a year. It could equal how much people pay for a fancy cup of coffee daily. So I think it could be worth it.👞

I handled a pair of lobb RTW in a store. If I recall they were approximately 2k. I think there are better quality shoes out there at only half the price. Would never buy a pair of these

That image of London is suspiciously a lot like Newcastle Upon Tyne
@Dooguk
@Dooguk 3 года назад
That's because it is Newcastle upon Tyne. The image was taken from the Illustrated London News 14th July 1866 and depicts a sculling race between Henry Kelley of England and James Hamill an American on the river Tyne. There were two races over two days each worth £250. Henry Kelley won both races.

They are beautiful shoes, but no shoe is worth it if it doesn't fit. Unfortunately, most shoe makers think all men have the same width feet. If you have bunions, forget finding any dress shoe that will fit. Even sneakers are a problem. Thankfully I now live in a warm climate and wear sandals pretty much all year round. My feet have never felt better.

Of course they’re not really worth it, you’re buying the brand. (Which there’s nothing wrong with) personally I buy some shoes that are less known/better made/value, then I also totally buy some things “because it’s a _____” both offer different things that I covet. Something like the Gucci bit loafer comes to mind with the latter.
