This is well worth the time to listen and watch. I'm learning and the information on values (range) in this lesson makes a huge difference in a painting. Also I agree, as an artist, beginning, light and the spectrum of colors is fascinating and beautiful. It's awe inspiring and trying to capture this beauty in a painting is like trying to put an angel on canvas.

That was the best explanation of values (which can be quite confusing to a beginner) that I’ve heard. The only part I was surprised about was the way he discarded so much of his work as I’ve found that some of my best work was the work that I struggled with initially. It’s almost that I had to overcome that barrier. Thank you for posting.

I rarely check in on the Streamline postinsg on RU-vid but happened to check your comment. I completely agree with you Le Bot! Most of my best work were paintings I thought were failures but I kept working through them. Stay well and happy painting!

Hi John…so much knowledge and your experience and the thoughts about what is important to think about in the studio and en plein air. Just super! I laughed to myself about your thoughts about being interested in science and architecture, but not math. I love astronomy, talk about math! I still have great equipment for astronomy as an amateur to explore the night deep sky wonders, but the math eludes me. Cheers - Greg

Hello John, I am rather new in oils and realism but I thought I knew enough about values until this popped up on my feed. Now in a nutshell what is a Seconday value? And which one of your videos do you recommend I buy to get me started ? I really want to get it right. Really appreciate your generosity of spirit. Byway, your landscapes tell amazing stories , you really are part of what you paint. . (I have a masters in iconography) Thank you!

I notice you’re using Winton oil paints, generally for use by student or amateur painters. Do you use them only for demonstrating, and if so, what do you usually use? 😊

Hi Diane. I know Winton is considered a "student" paint, which should normally be avoided at all costs. But I use the Winton Soft Mixing White for several reasons. I like the consistency and the zinc adds a little transparency. I know there are serious doubts about using ANY zinc in a painting, but I paint in such thin layers it's not an issue. In the last 30 years, I've had only one painting crackle, and it was the result of the medium I used, not the pigments. But I advise that you NEVER use pure Zinc White.

Everything is great but you hold your brush wrong. Hold brush at the end and move back more to see what you really got going. Looks great and great lesson.

Hi Allen, I agree that holding the brush at the end and not like holding a pencil is best. It's just habit I picked up and can't quit. But I'm sure you'll agree that at the end, it's the painting that matters. Who cares how Monet or Sargent held his brush?
