This is my favorite performance I've heard of this piece. I just wish the camera spent more time on the fantastic percussion section.

Guys like John Mackey, Carter Pann, Marjan Mozetich -- they're bringing classical music back from the dead.

I love how the clarinets raise their bells to the audience at 2:50! I'm a clarinet player and it was awesome!

8 years later, and still one of the best. when a composer gets you to make the groove face, you know they’re doing something right

I remember first hearing this piece a while ago, and I really love the intricate melodies and rhythms it gives, as well as the use of the countless time signature changes. I conducted this piece on my channel, and I have to say that it put up a fight. It's one of the hardest I have ever done, and it really stood up against the years of conducting experience that I hold. Fantastic job to this ensemble, and fantastic job to John Mackey for composing such a wild piece. :)

I've played timpani on this, Undertow, and Foundry. I love your heavy percussion incorporation and metric complexity. I think you're one of the best modern concert band composers in the world today sir, thank you for what you've given.

We played this piece here in Argentina, and I had the honor to play the xylophone and marimba part.. Oh My! by far the most complicated (and still awesome) part I've ever played... Congrats John.. this is a masterpiece

Watch closely when the trashcan'ist play quarternotes. The table underneath couldn't handle the funkyness and totally broke into several pieces. Yeah!

Why did they have 2 timpani sets on stage? What piece calls for that?

this piece has the same chaotic feeling as the end of firebird suite and honestly I respect that a lot

@John Mackey my highschool is performing this masterpiece for our national competition in Indianapolis and had a couple questions about your percussion 4 part if you have time to answer them, i wpuld greatly appreciate it. 1. There are O and + above notes which i assume means to open and close the hi-hat, but in wondering what the circle with the slash through it means. I have been playing it as an indicator to go inbetween open and closed. Is this the correct sound you were looking for? 2. In measure 35 you have it written to close the Hi-Hat with your foot but just 1 beat before it is says to do the same. This same pattern repeats itself many times, so as to get this right, if you had some insight on to how to olay that or if my previous understanding of the + meaning to close is wrong could you correct me please? thank you for your time.
