Yep...I just cried for a good ten minutes. I never met John Madden, but some of the best memories in my life are sitting with my dad watching football. Listening to Madden and Summerall calling a great football game. I miss those days.

The sadness John felt that day could only be matched by the joy he had today seeing his old buddy again in heaven. We are so sad down here because John Madden left an indelible mark on the game of football and as a a result, all of us. But he will live on forever and have a front row seat for every game forever. The NFL is not the greatest game today. While it is great entertainment, it is not family friendly. Ticket prices are out of reach for the majority of families. The owners always have their hands out for entitlements to help build their stadiums at the taxpayers expense. While their overpaid employees consist of a large percentage of thugs, domestic abusers, drug addicts, and general criminal elements.
Searching for things Pat and John upon hearing the news today, and wow, this one hit me. Those two were the voices of all things football growing up. Rest in piece John, go hug your friend.

Back in the late 80's I had the rare privilege of meeting Madden. I was one of the people who was refurbishing his bus. He was always so humble, so kind,complimentary, and so kind. As we worked to make the interior look less like shag carpeted 1970's, he never had a problem. I will always cherished that time of briefly knowing him...

I will admit that it is VERY difficult to beat John and Pat and their discussion of the Baby Bucket and whether or not the Mommy and Daddy Buckets were married, etc. I wasn't the happiest of young men back then, but these 2 guys made me bust a gut dozens of times in my youth and I will always treasure the memories of them.

Some of my fondest childhood memories are of watching Sunday afternoon football and listening to those 2. They made it something special. Something we dont have today. This one hit hard. I really miss these days of being a kid. My family would watch these 2 greats during Thanksgiving. John Madden would start analyzing the Turkey :) ... I wish I could turn back time and live it all over again. Life is so short, we only live on this planet for a very short period of time. Something that we take for granted as kids.
I've made it a thing to watch old Lions games on RU-vid during Thanksgiving time that Pat and John did, there's nothing like it. Transported back in time to when the Silverdome was alive and roaring with 80,000 people, Barry Sanders was terrorizing defenses, and broadcasted by the best team to ever do it, what an incredible honor! John spoke about the incredible meaning it had to do those Thanksgiving games with Pat, truly an honor that it was so many times in my hometown.
RIP to my childhood. And once again RIP to Pat. I used to watch these 2 legends every Sunday with my father who passed away 3 years ago. Now I watch NFL games alone. I enjoy them but they sure as shit aren’t the same.

I so agree, I remember losing my dad in the prime of his life. I was in so much shock it took me years to get over the emotional trauma. Today I have such fond memories of he and I fishing, playing golf and going to Dolphin games on weekends. I understand and so appreciate Johns sincerity.

I had the giants bills superbowl recorded on vhs as I watched it live on uk television, that was John and Pat, must've watched the whole game at least 3 times. The warmth, respect and friendship between them you couldn't miss, was a real treat to listen, legends they broke the mold with those two.

I was born in 1980 and i vividly remember thanksgivings at my grams house, digesting turkey and pie on the couch with my dad my little brothers and my uncles listening to Pat and John call a Lions or Cowboys game. What a blessing to have those two legends fill my childhood Thanksgivings and Sundays. I would love to go back in time and live in one of those Thanksgivings for a while....

You could feel the pain in John’s heart but he was a pro about it like his mentor. God blesses us with real greats from time to time and I’m so glad I was of an era that allowed me to listen and watch these two greats.
My heart was breaking, watching this video. Summerall and Madden were the consummate professionals and were such a big part of my life, on so many Sunday afternoons, during the playoffs and the Super Bowl. Who can forget them doing the "All Madden Team" on a Saturday before the Super Bowl. It was a not to be missed event. I'm glad that I was alive, when Pat and John reigned supreme and I got to see and hear them broadcast an NFL game. They were the best that ever was, or ever will be. RIP, Pat.
Thanks for the post. I had a great friend, I could have called him up broke down 3000 miles away at anytime, and say man I need to your help he'd say give me a few hours to get there. A great friend is someone who is better than you, but you don't hold it against them. You don't know true blessings till there gone.
Pat was a great play by play commentator. When they teamed him with John it was majic. Since they were with CBS and later Fox, they had the NFC during the regular and post seasons during that great run of NFC Super Bowl wins. Think of the memories of all those fan bases. 49ers, Redskins, Giants, Bears, Cowboys, Packers and Rams. Lots of great memories of their teams winning and listening to these guys calling the action.
sometime in 1968 Pat did a TV commercial for American Express Co. I made a mental note of it. the next year I was able to get an interview with American Express, my first job right out of college. I didn't list Pat as a reference on my resume but did mention the commercial during the interview. Thank you Pat. True Story.
Started watching football in 1999 when I was 10. Me and my dad watched every Rams game and every episode of HBO's Inside the NFL. I'm 32 now and I just realized how much Madden and Summerall were special people in my life. Madden and Summerall were iconic, you had to watch the game they were calling even if it wasn't your team. It was like you were in the room with them and they always respected the players and understood their emotions. They were funny and explained the game in a way that any one could understand even if you were just a kid. This was a great eulogy by Madden and shows how genuine these two guys are.
I grew up watching these 2 in the late 80's and 90's. There has never been a better broadcasting duo than these men. They are synonymous with Thanksgiving and football for me. Miss you Pat.
