I like that.. We're all enthusiasts. Not fans. Being a "fan" separates us from him. We're in it together. Having an experience. It's unmistakable John is feeling what he's putting out there when he performs and he's sacrificing himself physically to show each and everyone of us at every performance.

Just say you like doing it, John. You like screaming at people.

Saw him for the first time ever on Thursday with my daughter (who wanted to see him). I wasn't prepared for the level of physical activity. I think I understood the point. My daughter was really happy. So that's probably a better "the point".

John Maus Speakeasy Interview Transcript (With redacted incomplete thoughts, mumbles, etc.) I’ve seen before people think that I’m just throwing a tantrum and I’ve said before that some people have written, “What’s the point? What’s the point in doing that?” And then it occurred to me reading that, and I said, “That’s exactly the point. I can do that,” and I don’t mean to sound like a baby, but it’s destroying me. I mean, I joked with Gary War, this guy who I toured with once, you can feel the life, it’s like a year of your life doing something like that. Just taken away from you. Oh, have I ever sustained any injury? Yeah, yeah, but nothing like GG Allin or something. I’m kind of a wimp. It’s this wager that the hysterical body accomplishes something, betrays something. To try as much as you can to come up against the limits of what your body is capable of. It’s just my suspicion that that’s where something interesting can happen in a room with people. I’m not lying, I’m trying to, as ridiculous as it sounds, as old-fashioned as it sounds, I’m trying to be in the element of my truth or whatever. I’m trying to strip everything else and that away and appear. And give that. And share that. And mobilize that. I don’t like that word, “fans.” Of course, I understand what you mean. It’s enthusiasts! If we’re interested in using the work to redistribute the way we talk about things, that would certainly be one of the things we should get rid of. People on television commercials have fans. We’re doing something else!
