I love this song and Mayer. His music has meant so much to me and my family since his first album. This song makes me kinda sad for John. To me, this song shows his desire to return to this metaphorical neighborhood, settle down to a quiet life with a nice woman, truly be accepted for who he is, and reminisce with her about his past life of fame and music shenanigans.
Ok, but watch his smile at the end of the song. He's so proud, and he should be. His realism and awareness might top his amazing musical talent, which is impossible.

This was SO amazing in person! I was watching the video from St. Paul on repeat before the concert yesterday and I almost cried when he played it for us last night!

Was at this show, all the way from Texas. Took some dear friends to their first Mayer show. We had a fantastic time. This tour has been something special. Can’t wait to see him in Austin next
He’s added a couple instrumental measures in between the verses. “I’ll be kicking ‘round the neighbourhood” instead of sticking ‘round. Added a strum section prior to the awesome breakdown. He remembered the goddamn lyrics for once :))
The three or four songs he’s been playing on the tour are so dead locked into his early writing style …. If this album is that it’s going to be one of the greatest things to ever happen.
I was listening to the live in St. Paul version all day before the concert so I could remember the lyrics! When he played it live in Denver, it felt so so so worth it! Also, I learned the song on guitar off watching John on this video! So thank you so so much for posting this for both the memories and my learning purposes! 💜
Perhaps it has to do with perception and reality. “If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” as the philosophical adage goes. Maybe his way of creating his own reality, which he compliments with “might as well just do me now”
I think given the rest of the bridge I think it has to do with a “just you and me” type of feeling with the “nobody’s callin on the telephone”. Hits me hard as I’m in the military atm so personally that part really does well to capture what we’re all looking forward to. Getting out and coming home. Just me and her. No more leaving. No more being called away. Little optimistic for someone who’s only 20 but eh, one can hope nothin else comes up 😂
