"I thought perhaps I was going to die," McCain told ABC's Sam Donaldson in a 1999 interview when describing being captured and tortured by the Vietcong. WATCH THE FULL EPISODE OF 20/20: bit.ly/2obrBRj

I remember this. You could tell the republican party was starting to change dramatically, becoming a dangerous, racist, authoritarian cult. It became very obvious when they started letting people like senator McCain and senator Romney - two decent fellows - alone in favor of openly racists and conspiracy theorists that would eventually lead to Trumpism.
It really makes me want to cry when McCain refused the offer to return to the US and escape all this dread because he was thinking about his fellow prisoners. He was truly a selfless man... RIP John McCain...
"He was a war hero because he was captured. *I like people who weren't captured.*" - Donald Trump I'm a Democrat and I have a massive amount of respect for John McCain. He had respect for the people he represented, his country, and never bad mouthed anyone he ran against, nor did he respond to Trump's hate with hate. How did Republicans go from McCain to Trump?
F. Prince I agree with you. Just imagine trying to walk a mile in John's shoes? I don't have to agree with him, but I definitely felt his pain when he tried to wave his battered arms up to us with a big smile on his face!! He was (and is) certainly an American Hero! Every American that's ever served is a HERO! maybe trump would have been a good fighter pilot?

@BogeyDope So u may think that draft dodgers are tough dudes then for sticking to their convictions and not serving in a war they dont believe in? Just saying.. following from your sentiments it makes sense yeah?
@BogeyDope I agree with u no qualms there but anyone who served in whatever war should be commended and if they were unfortunate to become a POW they have some protection that is why the Geneva conference was implemented. For the commander in chief to pour scorn on a POW is not only childish but insulting to all serving personnel.
@Nelkir John Mccain has done more for the US and the republican party then you'll do in the entirety of your life bud. Even if he did graduate last in his class, he still graduated. What have you done?
The thing I remember the most about John McCain is that one joke that he told: "Do you know why Chelsea Clinton is so ugly? - Because Janet Reno is her father." Classic.
“He’s a war hero because he was captured, I like people that weren’t captured” “My personal Vietnam was avoiding STDs at parties” “I’d use torture even if it doesn’t work”
Yeah trump never acted like a hotshot son of a general and accidentally dropped bombs on his aircraft carrier, killing many men and getting off Scott free. He also wasn't named songbird by his fellow pow's for ratting them out to the enemy. You got no idea. Watch videos on what the other soldiers thought of mcain.
Say what you want about him, whether he’s a murderer, warmonger what ever it is you got to give him credit for walking the walk. Too many politicians are ready to push that button and give the order without having ever have carried it.
@@bigMzurythefantatic lmfao i didnt make the comment nor did I claim to have been in the army my statement was that if you haven't been through war or a POW camp you shouldnt criticize someone who has. Fucken loser.
@sid roth he fought in the war for everyone including the Republicans. For you to say he didnt fight for your freedom is just ignorant and ridiculous. You should be ashamed.
@@jamessears1000 John McCain is corrupt as hell and praised absolutely evil people like Henry Kissinger. He was drafted first of all and he was caught after he was dropping bombs on innocent civilians. No ones a hero fighting in a corrupt evil war
Dare I saw George (W) Bush is also a republican and a true American hero. A veteran that served honorably and flew his aircraft with such distinction. Such class.
That actually made me cry. I only knew that McCain suffered years of torture. While I've never really been a political person, I had respect for him, because of what he had been through. Trump is disgusting for saying what he said about John McCain. I don't see how any American can look past / excuse what Trump said.
@@colinmontgomery1956 Countries are better off fixing their problems amongst themselves and with close neighbors who understand the situation properly. Progress does not come through the "help" of strangers bombing whole cities. Have some perspective, man. That said, McCain is 100x the man I am, and he thought he did the right thing going into that war. I hate Trump for trying to stain him, and love that it backfired so hard.
@@niigu , the Vietnamese were unable to 'fix' their problem themselves, man. Remember, it was a proxy war; the Soviets and Chinese were supplying the North Vietnamese.
@@colinmontgomery1956 It is still very far from home, my friend. And as I said, neighboring countries and Vietnam itself could´ve solved their issues over time.
And remember, even after McCain lost the election, he congratulated Obama and hoped the best wishing for him. Compare that to Trump, who made claims Biden was cheating and he won. McCain was truly a gentleman. Rest In Peace.
I’ve never agreed with his political policies but this man will get my respect any day of the week. He’s a true hero and a real American. Trump will never get my respect after what he said about McCain.
landochabod7 it’s actually more complex that than. There was a grid used. Please check out the video I’ve linked, but the tap code wasn’t universal, so much safer ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TD5gTI5O2T8.html
My family, like Senator McCain's, served this nation since it's inception. DAR and SAR. Had family served in every conflict this nation has had. Father served 36 years and retired with 2 stars. Older brother killed when a SAM hit his F-4 Phantom. Next older brother served 22 years as a fighter pilot as well. We quit the Republican party after Trump's remarks about POW's. My father had been one in Korea. Senator McCain walked the walk, and talked the talk. Hero through and through.
@Jimmy Carter “We needed 60 votes” to repeal the ACA, Trump explained during an appearance before the Faith and Freedom Coalition, “and we had 51 votes. And sometimes, you know, we had a little hard time with a couple of them, right? Fortunately, they’re gone now. They’ve gone on to greener pastures-or perhaps far less green pastures. But they’re gone. They’re gone, Bill. I’m very happy they’re gone.” -Donald Trump on John McCain
john warter He didn’t abandon his children, what the hell are you on about? He paid full child support, alimony and college tuition for all of his kids.
I remember when John McCain came back from Vietnam after he was released from a POW camp,I like and respected him and I think that he started out having good intentions but,I think over time, the money, greed and power got the best of him,he was corrupt as the rest of them,he betrayed his country and I no longer have respect for this man
@@jose123001 dummy...he is rich and is leaving this presidency with a lower taxes to pay. And he was the one making policy for him to make more...supporting a coward is a real proud thing to be proud of....crazy
Bless you and thanks . I was on a you tube channel where trumps supporters were abusing him. trump and his cult base must be stopped. HATE HAS NO PLACE OR HARBOUR IN SOCIETY.
Im not a McCain supporter but after watching this McCains the man. I never knew the struggle he went through for our country until now. I will forever be grateful for his service.
Well u wouldnt know a thing about war n being captured during the process. However u felt obligated to insult a person who stood for what was rite. Atleast he participated in war not knowing he would won or not, what yur so called racist buffon trump did? Its easy to critisize.
John McCain love to get the United States into war so shut the fuk up you idiot. Not to mention he got his fellow soldiers killed there's a reason they called him Songbird.
It was the romance of Obama being the first Black president, and the fallout of Iraq for the republicans. Mccain in other times would have been the favorite. Im not sure its as much as he lost, or obama won, or more that the republicans lost
The decision to stay to make life easier for his fellow prisoners is something I respect immensely. This mans honour and love for his fellow man is amazing.
Much respect love, so sorry you had to endure this horrendous trama.... I love you so much because even after going through this.... you still fought for America. You are always missed.... Remember, you live in your children....especially Megan. She's so strong. Much love and respect. God Bless
Many of them still are. They just realize Trump's the only one that's exciting enough to win, even though he crosses the line WAY too often. They would've still loved McCain if he had won
Jesus, refused to talk?? The man was called the Songbird of Hanoi. He collaborated FULLY with his captors, made propaganda broadcasts for them , and in return got specially lenient treatment. Which he would have got anyway: being the son of a US Admiral, he was called the Crown Prince. A most valuable prize for them. The man was a LIAR.
Notice how every single time McCain speaks about how he got through literal hell, he mentions how he did it for his fellow troops and his fellow Americans and not for himself? When McCains wife said there is a massive difference between a McCain Republican and a Trump Republican, THAT’S WHAT SHE MEANT!
Midnightrambler3760 I bet you’d sell out the country if you experienced 5% of what McCain had to go through too. Trump is the coward bc he faked his way out of the draft
It's crazy. Think of it though. If I was in my home of southwest florida & a North Korean jet flew over dropping bombs & was shot down.. I sure wouldn't treat the pilot with a warm welcome.
@@noorrougelewis6704 Vietnamese saw Americans as invaders of their lands. I don't fault McCain for that politicians went to bed in America who sent him to Vietnam. It's no different then the middle east today we are invaders.
@mr burg LoL why are you comparing invading a country like Vietnam with fighting against Nazi? To be clear, the US is fucking wrong to invade Vietnam.
In 1987 I was part of the cast/filmmakers that made The Hanoi Hilton-a film about the prison they talk about in this clip. Among other things, we recreated those incredibly horrific torture scenes and even though they were not real it always bothered me to imagen how Fing bad it was for the men who actually experienced. Additionally, John McCain himself was in our film and I had the honor of meeting and working with him.
I'll always hate Trump for how he treated McCain. When says he saw men who went though worse. I don't know. He likely means immediate barbaric torture. Finger cutting and worse. Being starved and broke down in solitary is a whole different beast. Nobody will ever call him songbird to my face. When one beating from me makes em take it back. They'll get how strong he really was. I hope by the time he died and found peace and knew he did better than most of us could've dreamed. That those of us that live this country. Even Democrats. Had love for him that crossed party lines. We lost one of the greatest Americans of all time when we lost John McCain. A true soldier. And he never bad mouthed Obama. And absolute gentleman and a true class act. John McCain is a throw back to what made America the greatest. It's not this hate filled bullshit trump spews. It's being willing to put it all on the line for each other. Pushing it as far as you can. Setting standards that are unreachable. It took years to break him. And he wasn't happy with it. He continued to serve this country in one way or another until the day he died. I'm disgraced he had to witness the likes of trump become president. He didn't deserve that.
This is what a real hero looks like folks. Not a guy who can win a league MVP, or win a Super Bowl - this is a real patriot and a real hero. GBU Mr McCain.
And Busted; The Real Argo; Buried Alive; Snakes On A Plane; Vietnam POW’s: McCain & Brace. Gerne auch die deutsche Version. Vielen herzlichen Dank für alles.
M. Brennan lmao my point still stands,u guys just like McCain now because he tried to use a BS dossier to take down Trump and because well he’s dead now
I never realized that McCain could've gone home, but didn't want the other American POWs to think there's no hope for them and he only got out because his dad was an Admiral. That's incredible. He had an out at any time and he never gave in.
John McCain was a great man who always trusted his own judgement. That's what helped him survive as a POW. I'm not saying he always made the right decision as a politician but he didn't blindly follow party lines.
A humble and brave man, alongwith his fellow prisoners All respect to you all and your loved ones - I don't think I could have behaved so nobly. Regards from Blighty :)
I'm not a McCain fan, he was a poor presidential candidate, to endure what a prisoner had to at the Hanoi Hilton took tremendous strength and courage. I have absolute respect for those who endured such horrific treatment by the NVA at the HH. I'M not sure at what point I would break under constant torture. God bless all who had to endure.
We lost one of our true great American hero, brave, honest ,respectable man my condolences and prayers to the family for their pain and sorrow we thank you for your service R.I.P Senator John McCain you'll be missed.

John McCain was the perfect example of an American Hero. He never gave up and used nothing but mental and physical toughness to make it back to safety. Nobody can tell me any different.
As the Vietnamese it such an embarrassment to see him tortured like that. However, numerous Vietnamese soldiers being captured by South Vietnam and the US was beaten to death, that's the tragic things in the war
There is no need for you to be embarrassed. McCain was NOT tortured in captivity. As the son of an American admiral, he was seen as a a very valuable prisoner, and given especially good treatment . In gratitude, McCain collaborated fully with his captors. He invented the stories of his "torture" after his release to justify his collaboration. He was a man of low moral character who abandoned his wife (who had waited loyally for him during his imprisonment) when she was badly injured in a car accident. Americans are extremely gullible to fall for this lying nonsense.
SERE trained veteran here....this man was a mentor, a brother and a hero to myself and many, many others in the US Armed Forces. UPSET that they aired the tap-code at the end! We were sworn to SECRECY when we learned that during our training...now the enemy has a clue as to how to decipher the messages.
I might not have agreed with all Mr. McCain Politics, but I truly respect this man for his service to the country. All my fellow American Soldiers have my respect.
I wept while watching Obama's tribute and eulogy to this American hero. What a masterpiece of a human being John McCaine is. He recognized that America's greatest contribution to humanity is our example as a civil society. As brief as the human life is, I feel so blessed to have been alive while he was and to witness his example.
